  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

nvidia 590 gtx with 2x gpu coming

Maby with should ask for an update of the redrocket aswell....as I thought Red didn't design it themselves, but we might be in the market to have even more power..for 3d off course....editing multicam 3d in a fast way....

Or RED could just port their REDCODE decoder to CUDA... however much a GTX 590 costs, I'm sure it'll be less than a RedRocket. Plus we could use it for rendering etc when not decoding red files.

BTW, have you checked out that 3GB Gainward GTX 580? Tons of RAM, plus it's supposed to be very quiet, nice design.

Stick a stack of those on a nice Tyan motherboard (I have seen a photo of one guy with 8x GTX480s) and you'd have the most awesome vRay RT / iRay / luxRender / Arion / OctaneRender / Indigo Render machine ever!

...which you'll probably need if you ever want to deliver your CG in 4K to match the live action :)

I want Red to make a new Rocket that supports R3D and Prores. And hell, throw in H264 and I'll get rid on my Matrox Compress HD card. My Rocket and my Matrox Compress HD cards are AWESOME!!!!!!!!! I really wish someone made a Prores card to make Prores renders faster than realtime. That would be AWESOME!!!!!

My Rocket was worth every penny and I would pay it again to get Prores.

Everything on one card would be really nice.

ProRes is a tough sell, because its Apple only for encoding.

If I had to pick ONE codec for RED to add hardware encoding decoding support for, it would have to be Cineform.

I'd be very happy with ProRes as a second 3rd party codec they support.

Finally, I'd be tickled with h.264... but I think we'll see that in OpenCL from the operating systems soon. So it would be redundant.

Of course the RED wild card is Red Ray. That may be an h.264 replacement, and I imagine would be far more interesting for RED to work on the encoding/decoding hardwware for.

So, while I would be happier with Cineform, my money is on RedCode + RedRay for any theoretical Rocket 2.

I would think Cineform is a much smaller percentage than Prores. Prores is a great codec and an accelerator card for Prores would be awesome.

If you haven't tried the Matrox Compress HD for H264, you should. It is almost as much increase as Red Rocket.

ARRI and AJA would disagree with the above statement.

Ha Ha.

Yes, I imagine they would- as would JVC.

I still see being Mac only for encoding as a flaw, and so do a lot of people.

I'd prefer to see a cross platform codec get the traction and industry support.

Ideally an open & standard codec.

Is CUDA acceleration in CS5 supported over SLI? If not, this rumoured GTX 590, if it ever releases, will be slower than GTX 580.
