  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Number of SSDs for your Epic?

I would always do 3 of any media that you are going to buy (per camera). If you don't, you're inevitably going to hit snags on set. 1 mag in camera, 1 mag downloading, 1 on standby in case a mag has an issue you can still keep shooting without wasting any time. I was thinking 3 - 64GB SSDs would work great for a wide range of projects.

Would love to but that's way too much bank at the announced pricepoint.
Probably have to settle for 1*256 for the sorely need RED drive replacement plus 2*64.

I was thinking 3 or 4 64GB SSD's I think each has 20-30 mins run time @5k so that should be quite OK unless filming a concert or something. I like having my media broken up into smaller ( but not too small ) chunks when possible 15-30 mins is a good increment.

3X64GB should do for me... I once shot a whole filme with 1X 16GB CF... That was brave

I'm waiting to see the final word on pricing and possible bundles, etc.. But based on current info, I will be doing 3x256GB for each of my Epic-X cams, possibly 4 each. The 256GB are the cheapest $/GB option and 3 or 4 each would give enough storage that each camera could shoot all day without concern for offload. A huge deal for EFP and remote location tasks, lightweight mobile setups, etc.. Which I seem to be doing increasingly more and more of these days.

Ditto for me, but I'll do 128's. I alwys seem to but the mid size everything, ipods, cars, etc.

Anyone know the runtime tax for using HDRx? Is it actually double the data?

My hesitation about going deep into the 256GB's is that there are likely to be large price reduction / performances increases in the SSD word as they become widely adopted for laptop use. Hopefully Red will pass some of that along to us in a year or 2.

Even if you can offload and cycle media, it's great to not have to and the media. While I offload and check as often as I can, I only format and recycle media when a I must.

4 256 for me...2 for mx 2 for epic..mix and match to taste

Since I unfortunately work on a lot of interview shoots, the 256GB cards will be the move.

Even shooting with an Sony EX3, I have seen the 32GB cards fill up pretty quickly.

I was thinking I'd be able to get away with just (2) 256 SSDs. I only own 2 RED Drives now and have never really felt like I needed 3...

I do understand wanting at least 3 of a media, especially at smaller sizes -- and perhaps it'd make more sense to get (3) 128 SSDs for feature work. But I know I'd rather have the option to just keep shooting when it comes to Events and Concerts.

So I guess my questions is, is only (2) of the 256 unreasonable?

does someone have the link for RED SSD info? I must have missed it. did they officially announce the SSD capacities and approximate pricing (or just the capacities)?
