  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 3rd...

I feel ya! I just know that business is competition. Probably the fiercest next to war. And from personal experience, I never discuss or even speculate my fight strategy openly. Maybe with a trusted few. And I know Red has their game plan already, even if it's constantly changing. I also know their fundamental analysis is probably a million times more accurate than ours.

Fight date is set, I am confident in what Red is going to bring.

So... Anything any of us have to speculate is pretty much irrelevant. Not cause we don't matter, just cause its training camp time and what's done is done.

Now the hard part for all of us.

THE WAIT

Yep, but my analysis ussually turns out good, and often good against companies, if it wasn't for the longterm mess the economy is in, things would probably be different I see their game plan, and raise ya.

We love nothing more than a heads up competition. A fist fight. Specs to specs. Camera to camera. We live for this.

November 3rd. UFC. "It's TIME"".

Jim
The most interesting is that more than Arri, it is Canon who RED is competing with.

Nice to know :-)

Agreed, but I think it is from the perspective of Scarlet.

Where as Epic would be the competitor for Alexa, but then again Alexa is not 5K and Canon is flirting with 4k.

By the way just read your "Who Am I" link. You must have a time machine that puts everything on pause while you accomplish all these things!

I hope Red manages to up the MP count of the Scarlet. (not sure if this is possible without changing the sensor)
I know the lens and internals will make the Scarlet a great Digital Film camera but we'll have to wait to see if 5mp is enough for Digital Stills.

I think the Canon Prototype was a 4K camera with 2/3"Sensor and 8MP Stills

I really hope Red manages to produce a 4K Scarlet with 10-12 mp stills, prob wont happen but who knows ?

Yep, I would rather buy Scarlet with more mega pixel for stills work aswell, then Canon. You can guess which gives more sales then cinematography. A dual purpose camera for professional and prosumer eng and stills aswell as cinetigraphy has a good sales potential. So now we will see if we get one s35, a s16 aswell, or 4/3rds or just a ff35 with lens adaptor options for the other formats.

Nice to dream, but I think anything more than 8-9MP 4k as in the original Red 1 is a real stretch for an under $10k Scarlet. Jim once posted that 3k was as good as it gets for less than $10k.

There could well be more than one Scarlet in the lineup though. But don't expect Epic's APS-H sized sensor in the lineup. More like the smaller APS-C / academy 35mm frame size if they do a large sensor at all.

Given the shared technology, mass production modular design, and production cost efficiencies I think they could easily produce a Red 1 equivalent for a bare brain price in the original Scarlet S35 range of around $7k. Same resolutions/frame rates/compression ratios with better DR and features like HDRx. Outfitted with modules to match the original R1 features it would be about the same $17-18k range complete.

+1 on it carrying the first gen of Red's own electronic mount and lenses. Dare we hope for a next gen Dragon class sensor?

I think Dragon level tech is a possiility with the stretch in time line.

If we want a s35 system with volume efficiencies, dumbed down (no raw, no good codec rate etc) there is the $599 Nex-5n or its big brother vg-20 for $1599 or around that.

I think the biggest coup Red could announce on the 3rd would be a Scarlet 4K - 12-14 MP camera with interchangeable lens and at least one electronic lens ready to ship (plus optional mounts)
This would be amazing, and offer something any competitor in this price range would find hard to match.

The Red electronic lens with auto-focus and tracking is going to be huge for run and gun corporate, festival/concert, jib work, indi film etc...
The main thing is to do away with the need for a separate camera for Digital Stills work.
Grabbing your Scarlet instead of a 7d or 60D would be amazing, while the Scarlet may not (still remains to be seen) compete directly with these cameras in the
stills market, it would be a viable alternative for lower end work.

I hear you. +1 . ff35 answers everything, smaller format lens canbe used through included adaptor inserts. Maybe we will get an epic like this, fullframe 25fps, s35 50fps, 16mm faster etc.

The issue about the scarlet requiring fix lens to get the size down, an external lens canbe side recessed mounted with sensor on the back end of the case. A good fold out rail battery can get the side controls into the right handeling position for eng work.

If the rear mounted sensor is on a pivot, and display and controls, then the sensor canbe pivoted to become the front of the camera, and controls and display flipped back for access and view. Does Red have anybody that can do that ? Anyway, only an idea, we are getting what we are getting already, unless somebody is watching.

I think profi market already has Epic,
and now half profi market needs 4K for around 7-9 000 USD

...so Avid is also having an event on November 3rd, what's with this date?
November 3

But why 3rd? What did the Mayans say?

My conspiracy theory:

Nov 3 is a tie in between red and canon and avid.

We are focused on Scarlet but red is focused on the 4k laser projection.

Red lacks production facilities to go full consumer on the 4k projection and redray but canon has this kind of logistics.

Either that or Scarlet is a 2/3 3k camera lol
Add Avid as a way to get canon cameras to 4k and canon/red have a strong shot at becoming the next DVD/blueray standard.
