  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 3rd...

RED is the embodiment of "anything is possible" and I will be buying as many Scarlets as the Nov 3 announcement allows. I'm 25 and at the early onset of what I hope to be a long career, and I see no day where I choose anything but RED. It's more than a company.

I feel the same way. I'm the same age, same stage, and after being in LA/Hollywood for a year now, I SEVERELY dislike the system currently in place. There are so many people in this town with high ranking positions that have absolutely no idea what they are doing and only got there through networking and ass-kissing. It seems like talent and innovation are almost shunned as more and more "vanity" job titles are handed out to people who should be depositing my checks at the bank... not green-lighting scripts or working in production.

This has only gone on so long because there are NO OTHER OPTIONS. Hollywood quality films can simply could not be produced out-side the system... until now. It was not even a monopoly... it was simply just OWNED... Like if Ford was the ONLY manufacturer of automobiles. I'm hoping that Red is the beginning to a completely new alternative entertainment industry that rivals what is currently in place. I mean, when was the film-making process really ever changed... never? The unions have done a pretty good job of killing competition and making sure that the status-quoe was maintained all these years. I just hope they don't declare Red shoots "non-union" and ban them from productions... or something malicious like that. That's what happens... some kind of new competition shows up and then BAM! It's non-union and can't be done that way. End of story. Go back to the old-way where it costs 50x more and takes 10x longer...

Hopefully in the future we might even see completely independent theater chains... projecting Redcode, and completely by-passing the currently distribution system with the profits going back 100% to the theaters and film-makers. I know people Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, ect. have shown distain for the current distribution model... Maybe the "Red-movement" and internet marketing are the answer the current totalitarian studio system?

I can see it now:

November 3rd. 6pm:

Canon - "Here is our new DSLR/Regular camera. It's basically a 5D that can record raw video in 1080p. It also shoots slo-motion at an incredible 60fps (but only at 720p)!!!! It has built in HDR that looks like crap. Oh and it's shaped like camcorder and not a dslr now. It's only $8,000." But wait there's more. For you loyal Canon customers it's still $8,000. But you can still use all your canon lenses."

This has already happened... it's called the F3. But oh yea, no RAW and $15,000.:biggrin5:

Hola Jannar I have 2 Red One MX on stage 2 and I'm 100% ready to get my Epics.
Do you think that I can be shooting with them before november 3th ?.

Gracias David Torres

The 5D does not have an easier workflow. It's simpler but it's a lot harder because you have to be SO much more careful with a 100 menu color settings. Once you start manipulating the image in camera I find myself slowing way down to be sure I'm perfectly nailing exposure, contrast etc. RAW gives you some breathing room like film.

Also regardless if it ends up 640x480 on YouTube I've worked on a ton of High-end youtube videos and most of them were shot on greenscreen. Pulling a key from h264 vs 4k is a huge difference and will save a ton of time/money and improve quality by going the 4k route. Lastly I've had notes from CEOs passed down that asked if we could make the image less soft. These are executives are not film people and they thought their commercials were too soft when shot on the 5D, they didn't even have anything to compare it against. "Sorry, production company shot on what's practically an SD camera, nothing we can do now."
LOL

RED - "SCARLET is here, it's better than we said it would be. In fact, it's pretty much just an EPIC that costs less. HDRX, 120fps in 3K. Fixed 2/3 package (includes side handle, batteries, lcd, and SSD drive) is $10,000. Oh, and we'll be upgrading the sensor soon. And a year from now that camera you bought will be even better than it is now."

Novermber 3rd. 6:06pm:

Canon - "fuck beans"

WOW so much hate for a company that has brought affordable equipment to the masses, I luv RED to but we shouldn't hate on other's RED could be perfect 4 u but for someone else a Sony could be perfect or a Canon... Can't we agree that every company has something for everyone, also I don't think Canon is crap..

If we could scrape together the cash, we would have bought one already!

What's the return policy again... 30 days... so in 13 days I receive the Epic X and then 30 days later I get to return it... right? ;)

(Just a joke, please don't put coal in my stocking)

Looking forward to this. Hoping I haven't done anything to get on the shit list. Red still has my 1K deposit from 2008.

FYI, Red team, if you need someone to come down and produce a live webcast I am willing and able!

See you all Nov. 3rd.

Jim
While this was the pre anouncement day we have all been waiting for and I'm excited as hell. :emote_happyhappy: I did get troubled by your last post. Please don't go silent till Nov. 3rd. We like all sorts of updates concerning Red. :drool5:

Fight to the death? I choose....

Fight to the death? I choose....

If this is the first one-on-one face off between Canon and Red, I choose RED. My reason is in the Attached Image. Let's see canon bring anything like THAT to the fight!

I see the Scarlet thread is now closed. Jarred's last post stated Scarlet would be available to order on the online store from 7pm PST. That's really cool news. So that being said, and previous posts stating the Scarlet would ship when EPIC-X stages are ready, can we assume stage 4 EPIC-X will be ready by then?

;-)

How about a charity raffle for the first Scarlet (or several) to be shipped to the general public. I'm sure there are internal buyers and "friendlies" who get first dibs. But, after those.

Proceeds go to RED's preferred recipient. (How about a worthy, struggling film maker on kickstarter.com?)

At order checkout, click an option box to add $5/$10 on top of the body/package price. The winner gets the first one out the door?

Would be fun to monetize all this pent up demand and goodwill, towards some good juju.

Driving to location this morning at 4am and got a text from a friend... "look at the forums...SCARLET!" and I knew it was gonna be one of those days :) Very excited to see this thing out in the wild making amazing motion pictures. We all know the fixed scarlet is gonna be released, but I wonder if the interchangeable is still on the line up?

Exciting times, look out canon your 4k hair dryer is gonna get blown away!

Very EXCITED!

I have worked with the Red One MX more than any other camera model in my life. Thus, I have fallen in love with everything Red including 35mm sensors.

As of right now, I'm fairly happy with my Canon 5D Mark II, but I HATE the obvious flaws. On the other hand, I LOVE every aspect of the scarlet but I'm not a big fan of the 2/3 sensor. However, I'm dying for the huge increase in Dynamic Range, yummy 3k+ Red Raw sauce, and slow-mo!

To satisfy my needs, I can always get a 35mm adapter (if need be) for the scarlet fixed. On the other hand, if it is announced that Scarlet S35 is alive....Damn I will be on CLOUD 9!!!

Can't wait for November 3rd! About to go in debt and I couldn't be happier about it! :)

I can't wait to see what ppl do with this Camera, I wish we had all sorts of footage it would make everybody drool

would it be possible to put a 35mm adapter onto an existing lens and then put a lens on that (especially the fixed lens)? don't remember ever seeing this on a camera. I could be done but wouldn't the light loss and many other factors take away from the strong points of the scarlet? it could be interesting as a stylistic or artistic choice.

I'm assuming there will be a low cost s35 model as well, may not be shipping on the 3d, but some form of the epic-s. though there is the surplus of red ones both m and mx, as well as epic m and x, so the s35 sensor is already covered by red.

now lets say they did only release a s35 scarlet.... I'd still buy it, but honestly I want both, and considering I'm broke and scraping together just to get one camera I'd want it to be a versatile all around camera like the fixed with it's 2/3" sensor... with some changes, for the better of course.

Either way fun times ahead for the motion and still capture community, thanks to all involved and I mean all, from Jim, through all the red employee's, to Gibby Ketch, Dino, and those who may have inspired or driven the red project, even those who challenged red, even you yes you, and to those still to this day providing constructive feedback trying to help improve the camera and post in any way possible.

From the bottom of my heart thank you!

note: to many names to list (many I would most likely spell incorrectly, no offense intended)

keep innovating, sharing, caring, and doing what you love because that's all that matters in this world!

I think the announcement(s) will go something like this...

(I know the mask is a total hack job, but I just *had* to do it and didn't have loads of time for photardshop tonight!)
