  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lee, I should have put it a little differently. I think you knew what you were trying to say, but the language you used could lead to confusion for those that do not fully understand this. It is an issue I have to deal with constantly and have had to explain to many people. I was trying to clearly state the concept, but I shouldn't have done it in a way that indicated that you were wrong.

The more I look at the competition (video cameras under $10k) the more confidence I have that Red has absolutely nailed it in terms of price and features with the Scarlet.

I'd hate to be on Canon's XL-H1 team right now.

And perhaps I missed this somewhere, but is there any intention of creating a zoom lens or two for the 2/3" interchangeable Scarlet? It's pretty clear that any Canon or Nikon zoom lens is never going to be wide enough, and as much as I love primes it seems that there would be a good market for a ~$3,000 24-70mm-equivalent zoom (i.e. a 7-20mm). I'm sure such a lens exists currently, but I'd be surprised if Red didn't come out with their own.

You mean like this?

 Peter

Exactly, and have all icons in the look around at a lower opacity could help. The rectangle around the battery can be lost, and the media's capacity icon will have "look through" between the ring and the device. Their positioning as Peter photoshopped already deals with the possible issues of hidden trouble areas, mostly, as you will be able to catch something come in before hiding, then peak out again thanks to the space all around them. The possibilities of getting something perfectly hidden below one are a more than fair trade-off for good bars.

Also, I really wish there will be a two channel mode where the bars are thicker, hopefully the last bar thicker yet. And obviously the ability to take them completely off the GUI but, duh.

Also, I think there may be some space to gain at the top to improve on Peter's design. Probably at least enough to get one of those dealt with completely. Then the smaller payback button idea can deal with the other and presto, back to the record button which should be at full opacity unfortunately... but close...

Will both aperture and focus be programmable/adjustable through the Electronic Canon and Nikon mounts ? And will we be able to adjust the range/sensitivity for the (focus) wheel on the redmote pro ? :)

Coming from a background shooting 35mm stills, what are the field of view equivalents for the Red Mini-Primes? Is it 4x? Is the conversion below correct?

6mm T1.5 = 24mm FOV (35mm) equivalent
8mm T1.5 = 32mm FOV (35mm) equivalent
16mm T1.5 = 64mm FOV (35mm) equivalent
25mm T1.5 = 100mm FOV (35mm) equivalent
50mm T2.9 = 200mm FOV (35mm) equivalent

Ya- close enough...

Technically a 2/3 sensor is like 3.93 conversion, but you get the idea.

For those of you who haven't been following every post from RED for the past year I made a Scarlet and Epic primer post that will hopefully bring you up to date.

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38432

I will definitely need help with this!

I haven't seen this addressed, so I registered just to ask. Some of us are prosumer wannabe's and will save for a long time to be able to pick up the 8x Scarlet.

The 1080p and 720p scaled video, how much recording time will we be able to record on say a 16 gig card? I know frame rates matter, so let's say 1080p 24p or 720p 24p?

Thanks,
-Ed

25mm T1.5 = 100mm FOV (35mm) equivalent
50mm T2.9 = 200mm FOV (35mm) equivalent

I figured it at about this:

6mm T1.5 = 21.3mm H x 27mm V
8mm T1.5 = 28.5mm H x 35.9mm V
16mm T1.5 = 57.024mm H x 71.76mm V
25mm T1.5 = 89.1mm H x 112mm V
50mm T2.9 = 178.2mm H x 224mm V

BTW, DOF on those T1.5 lenses should be kinda f/5.6-ish on a 135 sensor wide open. Which in the case of the 6mm will be awesome and should still be shallow enough with the 25mm to do some real purty stuff. Theoretically. If my math is even close. We'll see. ;-)

Red 2/3" = 10.1 x 5.35
3072 x 1620 pixels
Aspect ratio is 1.896:1
Scaled down by 1.5 is 2048x1080 (DCI 2K standard theatrical resolution)
135 Crop is ~3.564x horizontally and ~4.485 vertically.

Howdy Ed, it depends what bitrate you choose to record at.

If you choose to record at 28MB/s, we can estimate how much time we'll have by: 16000 / (28 * 60)
Since we are talking megabytes per second, we convert 16GB to 16,000MB. Since we are talking in seconds, and we want to find how many minutes we have, we need to multiply to find the bitrate for minutes.

Hope this helps out!

Will the metadata contain the cropped sensor dimensions? So if it's the MysteriumX at 3k it would be very useful if it includes the exact mm dimensions for the sensor being recorded.

16000/1680=9.52 minutes! :-(

Howdy Ed, 1080p @ 28MB/s is the same bitrate as 3k @ 28MB/s. The bitrate is the bitrate, it doesn't matter what resolution or frame rate you choose.

If you choose to use 28MB/s for 5k, it will still take the same amount of space. Red does give different bitrate options, I don't know if they will offer anything lower - usually for acquisition people want higher bitrates for the most pristine picture to start with.

What is nice though is they do offer other storage options aside from 16GB flash cards - and flash card sizes are increasing dramatically.

I'd like to see a three-lens turret option on the Scarlet 2/3" that accepts the mini-primes. This shouldn't interfere with the board stack, right? It probably wouldn't interfere with the cooling system duct. Anyway, I think it would be a desirable option.

that's actually a really good idea.

DX lenses are made smaller (don't cover 'FF35') to save money, but they're still NAMED in FF35 terms (not sure why Nikon did this!!).

What do you mean by this? They name them as they are, with proper focal lengths. And all DX format lenses are labeled as being DX. In other words, Nikon named them just fine.

HOWEVER, since Red S35 is slightly larger than Nikon DX, I'm not sure DX-format lenses will cover it.

Hmmm... I know the Nikkor 35mm F1.8G AF-S DX covers RED One 4K just fine. But that is the only DX format lens I have ever used on the RED One. I don't know if it will fully cover at 4.5K, but it should, there was no sign of falloff or vignetting at 4K.
