Great idea. Ideas and comments are welcome.

And to the question: can you create and save custom layouts?.....

Yes.

My suggestion would be to keep it simple & structured: lay an XML foundation and publish a simple document with a functions listing, and update that document with each new layout release. I've worked with a number of UI systems from Wordpress to Xbox Media Center and some nail it, while others make it so cumbersome to customize that it's not worth the effort.

The great thing about the RED cameras, aside from the resolution & quality, is the ability to personally customize each rig per-project and per-operator. Bringing the same power to the user interface would be phenomenal if it was done right (i.e. easy) so that you could customize & tweak the GUI to your heart's content. I'm glad you guys are open to suggestions!

The same things you can control from REDmote can also be controlled over wifi or gige with a simple protocol.

This means one could easily use for follow focus this

We really appreciate that you 're so open Red Team!

DX lenses are made smaller (don't cover 'FF35') to save money, but they're still NAMED in FF35 terms (not sure why Nikon did this!!).
.

Hi,

Hasselblad lenses cover more than FF35 and are also marked by their actual focal length. Nikon would have been silly to have marked their DX lenses incorrectly. A 50mm lens is always a 50mm.

Stephen

apologize if this has been asked before on here, but is there any way to ensure Epic and Scarlet have the ability to flip/mirror the image output on the horizontal axis for stereoscopic 3D beamsplitter rig situations? Thanks!

Wel, there IS a crop factor compared to 35mm ('FF35').

DX lenses are made smaller (don't cover 'FF35') to save money, but they're still NAMED in FF35 terms (not sure why Nikon did this!!).

In other words, even though it doesn't cover 'FF35,' the 17-55 has the same ~1.52x crop factor on DX cameras as all 'FF35' lenses.

So the 17-55 on a DX camera is about equivalent to a 26-84 on a FF35 camera.

However, you're right in that between a DX camera and an S35 camera there will be little difference.

HOWEVER, since Red S35 is slightly larger than Nikon DX, I'm not sure DX-format lenses will cover it.

Uh, no.

A lens is a lens is a lens. It doesn't care what imager is placed behind it. A given focal length is a given focal length and Nikon simply marks their lenses in that given focal length as does every other lens maker on the planet. To do otherwise would open them up to confusion and lawsuits.

Now, what a given focal length means in terms of field of view for a particular sensor size is another matter. But then, lenses are not marked that way.

A quick question about the GUI: is a numeric DOF range indicator part of the options?

David

Will the GUI sense the orientation of the camera and be able to switch between landscape and portrait?

Hi,
I'm new to this board, but very excited about what Red is bringing to the table. Having worked professionally in the film production for the past 8 years (mostly in post, as an editor) I look forward to finally getting an affordable system and getting back into the production side of things. My questions:

So the 7D has 1.6x crop factor meaning that a 50mm Canon or Nikon lens will become essentially a 80mm (field of view) lens, correct?

It seems the sensor for the 7D is bigger than the Scarlet---Is the crop factor for the 2/3 scarlet 2.5x (thought I read that somewhere here) for 35mm mounted lens? Meaning a 24mm (35mm mount) Canon Lens mounted on a Scarlet becomes a 60mm (as far as the image field, not other properties)?

Before someone responds that sensor size isn't everything, I understand that Red is delivering a much better sensor that giving me uncompressed RAW data and better color space, 120fps, 3k, etc. while Canon is giving you a very limited, highly compressed image and is a very limited tool. My question is just in regards to what a 35mm canon or nikon lens will do mounted on a 2/3 Scarlet. Hope some of you can clarify, thanks!

The crop factor to equivalent 35mm (for a 2/3 inch sensor) is almost 4x -

So your 11mm Canon lens (for eg.) would be a 44mm...

Jim or Jarred,

Whats the word on being able to upgrade RED ONE to the later EPIC's like EPIC FF35 or EPIC 645, is that no longer an option? I was hoping that we might see an answer to that question. Thanks!

I've been thinking a lot about this as well. I just ordered a 7D because the wobble in my D90 is so bad, I refuse to use it (not to mention NO CONTROLS!).

But that said, my plan had been to get the 2/3 Cinema and use with whatever Canon lenses I end up getting. But, the more I think about the crop factors and all that, I am starting to think that if I plan my shots more carefully for my productions, the 7D will be great for more static positions with much lower DoF (dialog and stuff) and that the FIXED scarlet will become our action camera. I just cannot get over the price. All that power at that price point, I think I can live without such a range of DoF that I wouldn't get from the same lens.

To me, this seems win win for our projects.

I'd like to see a three-lens turret option on the Scarlet 2/3" that accepts the mini-primes. This shouldn't interfere with the board stack, right? It probably wouldn't interfere with the cooling system duct. Anyway, I think it would be a desirable option.

Oh, wow, that would look just too cool - some kind of Redcode-Bolex-Monster...., but I think the mini-PL mount just reaches too far into the body to make this feasable, those turrets used C-mounts.

Hey Jarred, is there anyway we can get a picture of the Scarlet/Epic Brain without any modules on it at all (even the CF Module)

I'm curious to see how it looks as JUST the brain and nothing more.

What?

Someone had said because DX format is similar to S35, with DX lenses there would be no change in field of view ("crop factor") when mounting the Nikon 17-55 DX on a Red S35. My post is saying that there would be, just like any other lens.

So I used the words "just like any other lens" and you used the words "a lens is a lens is a lens." That's pretty much the same thing, so I'm not sure why I got an "Uh, no."

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread for a sec.

Back on topic, I have three questions :

1. Will there be non-touchscreen LCDs for cheapskates like me?

2. Will there be non-electronic lens mounts for cheapskates like me?

3. For modules/accesorries that have a range rather than a single price, is that because you're not sure what the price is yet, or because those modules have 'options' available?

I think it would definitely require a new body design or modification, but it would depend upon the board-stack arrangement to be completely off-the-table.

Really?!? Why would anyone mount there Canon or Nikon lenses on a 2/3 Scarlet? The widest prime lens from Canon is a 14mm for $2300 and that would become a 56mm? Weird. I'll get the Fixed Scarlet or go with the mini primes that were designed for this cam. Hope others here that are talking about using their old SLR lenses realize the FOV sacrifice if they purchase a $500 adapter for the 2/3 Scarlet.

Thanks for the heads up Matthew!
