  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 13th... prep.

Video/motion isn't very interesting to me, and I had never heard of Red before the DSMC "DSLR killer" comment. Is any of this hype, and the announcement on Thursday, about that device, or is all of this just about Scarlet and Epic and other video products?

1. Scaret and Epic are NOT video products; they are digital cinema projects, which is far better than video.

2. Since RED seems disinterested in optical viewfinders, I for one am highly skeptical of the DSMC and other RED products for serious still photography; keep an eye on it in case they fix this, but otherwise you might want to stick with Canon or Nikon.

3. I think all of this so-called "hype" is only directly related to Scarlet/Epic (DSMC equivalent is supposed to be in January if I'm not mistaken?) However, RED is likely to apply some/most of what was learned in the construction of these cameras to whatever they end up doing with DSMC, so there is likely to be some connection -- though what that connection is will probably not be evident until the DSMC announcements.

4. Stills pulled from RED motion footage are generally of much better quality than stills pulled from video footage; some are supposedly using the One as a high-speed-continuous still camera at times by pulling the frames they are most interested in; the One is a 12 Mpix camera). This does not, however, fix the EVF problem, so monitoring is still limited when considering use for serious still photography.

Note: if EVF doesn't bother you, feel free to disregard #2 and the "This does not" segment of #4... it bothers me though, and I have no intention of considering DSMC (or any other product from RED or any other company) as a primary camera for still photo work if it lacks an optical viewfinder.

I'm DEFINITELY waiting excitedly for info about Scarlet. One is too far out of my price range right now, so Epic certainly will be as well for the forseeable future.

Jim, planning any giveaway contests, like Canon's photo-in-the-parks one, for example? :)

Let's not get caught up in marketing speak and semantics. The guy who used the word "video" was obviously speaking about capturing moving images on some type of medium so cut him some slack. Red, Sony, Panasonic, Arri, whomever are all in the business of capturing motion images to a recording medium be it film, tape, card or disc. Simply putting the marketing term "digital cinema" on a product does not automatically make it superior to any other product.

Calling something digital cinema doesn't make it better, but recognising that the needs and aesthetics of digital cinema are different than "video" does indeed make for a better product.

Are we still the only ones who have noticed that, if you are in the U.S., the information release will be tomorrow night at 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time?!

See the countdown clock on www.red.com, everyone! It's only 34 hours away!

Perhaps someone tricked the guys at Red just like Jim did to Dwight on "The Office" and convinced them it was a day later in the week than it actually is.

...for some purposes, not others.

RED 1 is upgradable.

I feel like the new sensor upgrade will be announced too to quell any discontent.

Epic should/could have 2 more stops of usable range via bit rate and large sensor debayer/down convert. Red 1s 9.5 stops (usable) to 11.5 would be a sweet addition.

Media options could be announced too. Off-the-self Raid 0 SSDs or CFs. Talk has been quiet for a while about these.

Talk of 65 mm sensor equivalent seem scary to me. Tough to focus for anything other then f8 landscapes/establishing shots. FF35 mm seems likely though given the "competition" and sensor availability.:w00t:

I'd be interested in seeing Scarlett becoming a unit that could replace HD units like the HVX900 for broadcast work. The ability to mount B4 lenses for 2K would mean a lens mount system of some sort (PL? as adapters exist). This would also allow stills camera lenses to be used, a big plus for Indy guys and some other specialty applications... I would like to see the Red 1 sensor used though even if output was somehow restricted to 3K via the (much maligned by JIM 2 years ago as it applied to RED1) down convert.

Just thinking over a coffee...

Agreed.

Oh ya,

Don't forget Remembrance Day is today in Canada.
We all have good reasons to pause and reflect on the 11th hour.

The clock on red.com uses your computer's system clock, but does not take account of your time zone (try changing your time zone setting and re-loading the page). So depending where you are in the world the count-down may well not be correct for you.

I'm skeptical as well, as I consider TTL OVF to be required. But I'm open minded about it.

If so, then I'm already disappointed, since the DSMC is the only proposed product that interests me. Well, unless Scarlet is the DSMC, which makes little sense to me.

To me pictures/images/stills are all the same thing, as are movies/video/motion. The quality of each can certainly cover a wide range, but the real difference is a single frame versus many frames taken at a steady cadence. Some people say things like "I don't take pictures, I capture images". Whatever. Same thing with "I don't take video, I shoot motion pictures". Cough up some quality, I don't care what you call it.

Thanks! So on the international date line, it's only one day and two hours (plus change) away. Nice...!

Hey Everyone,
Long time lurker first time poster (actually been watching these boards since the begining) Anyway, just wanted to say how completely stoked I am for the announcement on Thursday, Red has to be one of the best companies in the digital cinema market place and I know that we should all be blown away with tomorrows anouncement. I never did understand all the complaints that people seem to have about a company that goes above and beyond what any other company is doing, especially when we dont even know what the fianl product quite is yet. Well I huess that is it for my first post, many more to come I am sure. Thanks to everyone else who posts on here, I have learned so much from these boards that even though I have never seen a Red in person, I bet I could pick it up and run with it. Thanks to Jim and all the others for all your hard work and dedication.

I´m Sorry. I opened Pandora's Box with a single comment.
"1000 FPS in Scarlet in SD"

Hey don't worry about it. If nothing else, we saw from the discussion that there are people who could use high frame rates. It seems pretty clear that RED is not traveling down that road at this time, also good information.

Might be "just" a module to replace Scartlett's Cine"back".
