  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 13th... prep.

I'm very interested in the new RED cameras and would never think to hijack a thread, but all this talk of the value of 1000fps has me laughing. I mean, we do EXTREMELY well renting and selling Phantom cameras, and we only service the production market (as opposed to the technical and military markets, which go directly to Vision Research). If you only knew how many commercials used high speed, often very high speed. All of the food shots flying by at 700fps or so, car shots around the same, beauty products, etc. There are people who make their living shooting nothing else.

When we first got involved with Phantom, we wanted to show that high speed was not just a "novelty" but instead a creative, artistic tool. To that end Vision Research and Abel Cine Tech worked together with SuperFad to create a short promotional film done all on the Phantom HD. It's on our website along with some commericals, sports and art pieces, all shot with Phantoms. I really enjoy the Industria piece done for the Mexico Tourism Board (first piece on the COMMERCIALS page). Check 'em out and then tell me that there's little use for high speed.

Jim, Jarred...I have plenty of cohebas and Montecristos with your name on them. Cheers fellows, and to the rest of team.

Quick question Jim, are these just announcements on the 13th or will I need to have some finances ready and be trigger happy to make reservations? From what I remember RED is trying to avoid reservations...just curious.

I do love that camera. I saw some Phantom footage shown at NAB and it is absolutely stunning. If Epic is able to achieve these frame rates or even half of them with exceptional quality, it's going to be a big deal. You will see people upgrade their Red Ones very quickly. But there are two key components to it jumping into that same category as Phantom. High frame rates (at least 500) and the exceptional quality, i.e. super clean 4K. If it doesn't hit those marks, Phantom is very safe. It may be safe anyway because it's a different beast. Uncompressed being one of the things.

Right on, Mitch.

But I'll stop there, don't want to continue the hijacking...

Mitch... I said that's why there is a Photosonics and Phantom. No question there is value having access to that option (although I have no use for it). But there is a price to pay for speed. RED does not believe that providing this option at 20X the price is something our customers need when they can rent that option.

Jim

1 - 120fps + 5 secs. of 180fps would cover 97+ % of my technical\artistic needs.
Just my 2fps.

150 fps standard would be great, like a 16SR3 HS / 416 Plus HS / 435 Extreme, a very useful speed range. Most of the time I overcrank to 50-75 fps, but 150 fps...a dream. Jim`s totally right with 1000 fps. I don`t see that much useful applications either. Most of the times I would just play around with that feature, not more...

Chronicling this Journey

Chronicling this Journey

Jim, I hope you have someone on staff or a journalist who is recording these events as they transpire and will publish a book on RED's amazing journey so far (like Tracy Kidder's "The Soul of a New Machine").

This would make for a great read.

Agreed that the price jump for the occasional 1000fps use wouldn't be justifiable for most of us.
When the tech cost comes down though, I wouldn't say no to a few hundred extra fps!

The image of a great white shark leaping out of the water to devour a seal, in super slo-mo, is permanently burned into my mind. (Planet Earth series)

Twixtor

Twixtor

Why not simply use the twixtor program on top of 100+fps to simulate 1000? It would be so slow that the aesthetics would be indistinguishable.

Now for scientific purposes, 1000 is golden. But these are not science cams for the LHC. When I heard the 120-180 quoted for the Scarlet, my jaw dropped.:usd:

Will be possible to watch clips shooted by Scarlet soon?

Thanks for everything Jim and all the people working in Red projects,
i'm waiting for..

Miko

180 fps on Epic would be amazing, and all I would ever need in normal "situations". Otherwise, it's a very specific application and that certainly would call for a rental to get the tool that is meant for that task.

The 13th seems to be just over the horizon now.

Introducing the Phantom v12.1
The world's first CMOS-based high-speed camera capable of taking 1,000,000 pictures-per-second

Hahahaha 1 sec = 11.57 hours at 24fps playback...
kind of long!

Dont forget the resolution. 128x8 :usd:

If you are disappointed, we will never satisfy you. If you are blown away, the future just begins.

Will the 1000 FPS advocates step to the left side please. For the majority of us the speeds mentioned by Jim Jannard and Jarred, 150FPS and 120 FPS, is more than enough. And if higher frame rates means adding more cost to the price, forget about it.

as I said Mitch... commercials :)

There is definitely a place for the Phantom, and Abel is a the perfect place for it as it is a great RENTAL tool . Personally I just dont feel it is the right tool for dramatic people intending to shoot 24/30/60 content 95% of the time to actually PURCHASE as their main camera, mostly because of the price point, as well as some other technical issues.
