No, it will turn from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly...

I do love that camera. I saw some Phantom footage shown at NAB and it is absolutely stunning. If Epic is able to achieve these frame rates or even half of them with exceptional quality, it's going to be a big deal. You will see people upgrade their Red Ones very quickly. But there are two key components to it jumping into that same category as Phantom. High frame rates (at least 500) and the exceptional quality, i.e. super clean 4K. If it doesn't hit those marks, Phantom is very safe. It may be safe anyway because it's a different beast. Uncompressed being one of the things.I'm very interested in the new RED cameras and would never think to hijack a thread, but all this talk of the value of 1000fps has me laughing. I mean, we do EXTREMELY well renting and selling Phantom cameras, and we only service the production market (as opposed to the technical and military markets, which go directly to Vision Research). If you only knew how many commercials used high speed, often very high speed. All of the food shots flying by at 700fps or so, car shots around the same, beauty products, etc. There are people who make their living shooting nothing else.
When we first got involved with Phantom, we wanted to show that high speed was not just a "novelty" but instead a creative, artistic tool. To that end Vision Research and Abel Cine Tech worked together with SuperFad to create a short promotional film done all on the Phantom HD. It's on our website along with some commericals, sports and art pieces, all shot with Phantoms. I really enjoy the Industria piece done for the Mexico Tourism Board (first piece on the COMMERCIALS page). Check 'em out and then tell me that there's little use for high speed.

Just curious... what the heck would you do with 1000fps?
Jim
1 - 120fps + 5 secs. of 180fps would cover 97+ % of my technical\artistic needs.
Just my 2fps.
Introducing the Phantom v12.1
The world's first CMOS-based high-speed camera capable of taking 1,000,000 pictures-per-second
Hahahaha 1 sec = 11.57 hours at 24fps playback...
kind of long!
If you are disappointed, we will never satisfy you. If you are blown away, the future just begins.
