I know I'm going for the EPIC-X soon as stage 4 opens up. But I still care about the Scarlet being fully compatible with the Epic so it can be used as a second camera on set for a multicam shoot - so the hope is that its 4K for sure. Framerates not a biggie. Just the resolution should match the Epic. I hope this will be the case come Nov 3rd.

I'm expecting Nov. 3rd to be the biggest announcement in the history of RED.

Jim

Bigger than the announcement of REDone ? No way !!

That movement of yours changed the entire map of Cinema production and fastened up the death of film cameras.

All film camera makers alted their productions the last two years and turned to digital cinema because of RedOne.

Me too, I'm not such a frame rate junkie, so I am hoping that there is a good frame rate/size of sensor/No of K trade off that plays in that direction too.

I Don`t Nkon if some one already said that, but here are my toughts on something that might be a good guess on what to expect to be announced:

The EPIC-S body is suposed to be sold at $14.500,00... It is suposed to shot 5K at Up to 60FPS... And be able to record at compression Ratios up to 6:1... And it is supposed to be able to do HDRx... It is already a way better câmera them the REd One MX, and it will be $10.000,00 cheaper.... So, if they can actually make this câmera with this specs, and sell it for this priece tag, and make it profitable, what is stoping them to Drop the priece on the RED One? Imagine the RED One being sold For $10.000,00. Blowing Away the F3 (with or without S-Log and/or External Recorder), and whatever Canon might come up with.... That is something that would never get out of backorder...

I think the Red One had its time in the Red Roadmap. Its still a great camera, one of the best in the market, in fact, but it goes against the new modularity and DSMC concept of RED. Its more of a conservative old school camera on the outside with a very cutting edge engine inside. The engine is still cutting edge, but the chassis is just not up to the new DSMC era standards.

The Red One will still be around for many years and producing many features and works. It will still keep its value in the marketplace, and it has an established workflow. I don't see, however, Red keep manufacturing Red Ones in the near future. They seem much more expensive and prone to outside supplier issues and malfunctions to than the current, completely made in USA DSMC's...

Smart people with money are likely buying the RED ONE and storing it away unopened so they can leave it for their kids' kids who will end up owning a very valuable collector's item. ;)

With all due respect, I have been shooting on the Canon 1D MK IV, which is now my paperweight. Those cameras are not made for filming movies. Sure the resolution is nice, the DOF is nice, but RED is a CINEMA camera, and canon is not. That is for their DSLR's, now, with respect to their new bodies that they may or may not be coming up with, they are years behind what red is doing, which is why people have been trying to break into RED's offices for some time. Canon takes nice stills, and if you shoot two people straight on at an F8 or 11 then maybe you can keep them in focus, but I'm pretty sure Jesus is all booked up for 1st AC'ing. No contest, no way, and if by some crazy chance they had something new that was close, are they offering an upgrade system? NOPE! Are they greedy? YES! They make nice lenses but the Red Pro Primes are some of the nicest lenses apart from Master Primes I have ever held in my hands, but, if you like Canon, by all means, more RED for me :0)

Hi Paul,

Sorry, but... who is arguing this point with you??
I can only assume this post is directed at me?? If not then please disregard.
If you want to get stuck into a good Canon V RED argument Paul. Sorry mate, your preaching to the converted and will only be listening to the sound of your own voice.

I felt I better respond, as you are now constructing an argument with a point of view I have not expressed and I would prefer if you instead observed the literal content and context of my posts please. As was stated, I have referenced Canon entering the market, because it has been strongly referenced by JIM in regards to the upcoming release and so has merit/baring in speculating on many aspect of RED's potential release plans. From the scheduling of the Scarlet release date onwards... I thought that was very apparent.

But just in case there's any further strange confusion on my sentiments. RED has my devotion and dollars as I have posted several times.
I care about specs. But whatever the case I care far more for RED's philosophy and vision. That said, if you actually want my opinion which you have referred to twice without me having actually expressed it, it is this...

I hope Canon do do something kick ass. As I would think does everyone. RED does. Which is WHY they are so awesome. But I am personally in agreement with you. I highly doubt Canon's codec/workflow will even get them into the same ring as RED. As a former fighter myself - the way I see it is due to redcode, whatever skills Canon may offer, they will very likely actually fail to first make weight.
I'd like to be wrong though as the more competitive Canon'e release is, the less time I potentially face in waiting for my new RED camera and parts.
All in all it promises to be a cracking event. Though all the smart money is surely on RED.

Ok, I hope that's done. I don't really feel like I should need to show my RED buss pass to anyone, and I feel a little sullied, but I have done so once more out of courtesy.
I hope there is no more misunderstanding, just joyful speculation and banter to help pass the time.

Best

Lliam

I like the cut of your jib young man….

I know I will get burnt at the stake and tarred and feathered for this.

Ok a 3k device with fixed optics etc. seems like an accessory or something that you could hang off a key chain (compared to how these guys think). Over the past three years RED’s market space has been a moving target, without question. A wish list from three years ago dosen’t make sense to me either. RED is always forward thinking and is forever it seems passing the ball forward to where people are going to be.

Yup a 3k fixed lens shooter would sell nearly a hundred thousand units… or more, (no question), but that is simply NOT Red’s market space, that would really be heading in the wrong direction. So I would definitely expect more rarified capabilities come the day to chop demand from a hundred thousand units to maybe 20 thousand units? If people feel that the ball has been thrown to far forward in a year or two these people will eventually catch up. I don’t see the benefit in retrograde thinking for the RED “business” model.

[I think if they have 3k shooter fixed lens shooter, the whole camera should be built into a pistol grip, that would be fun].

Cheers,

Eric

Lucky you live in free and democratic country Eric!
Though I still fear you may soon be waking up with the decapitated head of a Panny AG-HPX500 lying on the pillow beside you.
if you haven't already been killed by some kind of cluster bomb filled with 2'3rd sensors that is :biggrinjester:

Texting is not the best way to get ones point across, and humor certainly doesn't come across properly as well. My point is simple, it's all spec, red could raise their prices by 10K and people would still be lining up because now more people can shoot films. Some vague reference to fighting in your post, I am too old and have a brain tumor so I'll pass on that. But, I am working on a unit that will eventually take all the properties from third party companies and make them available as a hardware unit for the red cameras if they are interested in the r and d I am doing. But specs don't mean performance, if the left eye is sharp but the falloff is too steep does that mean Canon is in the same area? NO! Red hopes other people do well, but RED is the APPLE of the digital cinema world.

OHHH that’s so funny, very sharp.

Yup I have to say Panny AG-HPX500 is the absolute antithesis of what we would ever want!

I think MY nightmare is an attack of the “plague” of small sensors by the billion, the nano-bot- grey goo scenario to come and eat us all alive (the same scenario that Prince Charles was warning us all about).

I have to admit, (form a technical point of view) I am not that attached to or really like Canon glass, but I guess that’s because we have to use primes of one sort or another for our kind of (weird) work.

I have to admit, respect to Apple and Red, and comparisons that are usually made, but I have to say I don’t really think of RED as the Apple of the cinema world, I tend to think of it as RED is the RED of the cinema world.

Credit where credit is due I think.

[TO BE HONEST… I wish computing hardware would go more the direction of RED design (thinking). I have been a huge Mac fan from the early 90’s but somehow there is this sort smugness more recently that seems to have taken over… [we have to develop on other platforms]. The end of civilization will have us going over the edge of a cliff in a comfy arm chair with a café late in one hand and a i-pod in the other (I’ll get stoned alive for messing with “sacred cows”, a sort of pantheistic free for all)... RED does not have that kind of "smugness" and I wish more in the computer and hardware industry were going for more robust and less disposable designs with simpler (No BS) OS/interface(s).]

In part I think the computer industry could learn a thing or two from Jim’s design mind set, I really do.

Hi Paul,

Very sorry to hear about your brain tumour. I have just come through my own brush with cancer and lost my best friend at age 23 to a brain tumour - which is actually the inspiration behind the current film I am working on. We have set ourselves the goal of trying to raise a million dollars for cancer research. Hoping yours in benign, but my very best wishes to you regardless.

The product you are developing, or conglomeration of, also sounds fantastic.

Stay well
Best Wishes

Re Charles. Thats hilarious!

As long as it's not true of course... :leaving:

Thank you! My mother had MS, so far it looks benign whatever that means, but even if it's not, I will fight it. Brain tumors actually are easier to treat than some other tumors or cancers. Yeah, I saw someone post something like what I was developing for the film look, what I have specked and r and d'd is much cooler and completely different. So thank you Liam. Hope all is well and that you reach you goal, if you need help in New York don't hesitate to message me, I ain't dead yet.

Wow, Paul and Liam,

Do make a huge noise when your projects come near to fruition. Would be amazing to see what you guys bring into being.

RED “spirit” indeed.

Respect,

Eric

So everybody that goes to the Red Studios on “THE DAY” get a free Scarlet right?

Maybe even better they should have a raffle for a Scarlet, five or ten bucks or something and give the proceeds to a deserving cause, (ahem, ..cough, cough..)..Now an online raffle, that would be something...
