Don't think that canon, nikon etc haven't been watching RED. I wouldn't be surprised to see Canon have a Cineform-based standardized codec in the new camera. the benefit of RAW has become as clear as 4K to these companies. Of course we've all known this for years.

In regards to the rumors about Canon specs, what's being talked about is the record format but the camera could have other ways of outputting much higher quality to external recorders.

RED has the upperhand because essentially they are able to pull from RED One and Epic technology and make a powerful little brother. Canon has deep R&D resources, I understand that but they also have a lot of corporate infrastructure to deal with. RED's ability to change and adapt quickly is a great strength.

The only area that I see Canon potentially having an advantage is in manufacturing and shipping. The question that will be on everyone's mind Nov 3 is when will these cameras ship? I suspect demand for Scarlet will be greater than any product RED has ever made. It will put a huge demand on their manufacturing division. But it's not like Jim is a stranger to big time manufacturing. I'm sure they are preparing for the onslaught. Canon it would seem would be in a better position to crank out a ton of cameras and meet the global demand. All ofcthat may not matter though if RED comes to market with a camera that is that much better than anything else in its price range. At that point people may be willing to wait a little bit for it. If RED delivers the best under $15k camera in the market and has enough of them to meet the demand, then it truly is game over (not really, because people choose cameras for different reasons but still).

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but if RED and Canon were yanking our chains here and partnered on Scarlet (there's only one reason I could ever see RED doing this) then that would send the biggest shockwave through the industry that we have seen in a long time. Like I said, I'm not one for conspiracy theories. My gut says there's nothing there. It's just a fun theoretical.

You have to give RED credit here. They have really pushed these other camera companies to offer more for less. You don't have to like their product but hard to deny their impact.

I'd say they are in pure comparison of company size, they are the under under dog. Most likely even the division that makes one camera is larger from Canon, but that's not taking away from either company many different ways to accomplish things and many people out there who desire one or the other. I happen to like the Red way of doing things, but who knows some others might start to change so we'll see what happens next.

Exciting times indeed!

I share your sentiment. Very exciting. And agree, yes Red's approach is unique not going down the corporate front and staying in touch on a personal level. I admire everything Red has done and their catalogue is starting to blitz Hollywood at a rapid rate.

Sometimes I view their self depreciation with a question mark over it, every company starts with a modest beginning, if Red want to continue working from a garage it's a choice based on time vs money, I'm sure Canon didn't have a billion dollar empire 5 years in. I don't want my opinion viewed as an attack when in fact I'm actually in profound admiration for Red and the impact they have made in a short time and how they have changed the game. I'm simply trying to put out there that they need to give themselves more credit... which I guess they do :) Their posts are nothing short of cheeky cryptic self praise disguised with tones of 'were underdogs' . I think we all know Jim takes pride in his well crafted posts fusing good and bad qualities wrapped with a big fat 'look at us now' bow on top :)

The writing is on the wall. Red is now mainstream Hollywood. Canon are not. I know who I'm pointing my finger at as the silver screen under dog.

...It's funny. I'm not really that interested in what Canon will announce on Nov. 3rd. Will their camera have a S35 sensor? Perhaps. Will their recording codec or method be far better than what they offered on their DSLR's? Perhaps. Dont get me wrong - I don't doubt that theirs will be a great camera! Canon makes great cameras. I actually began making small movies with a Canon camera back in the day.

But...since I first heard of RED and their RED ONE, I've always dreamt of OWNING a RED-camera myself. I still do - I just love them and what they offer. And no matter what Canon will release, I'll go for a RED camera any day of the week.

...Besides - will Canon offer an upgradeable camera in the way RED does...? I don't think so.

I'm excited about Nov. 3rd. because of RED's announcement! :)

I would say you are looking at a 8-10MP 4K Camera with maybe S35 sensor size.
I just hope there is an interchangeable version with at least one electronic lens available straight off.

I would love a Digital Stills camera to match the lower end DSLR's MP's but I dont think this will happen.

I must say I was blown away by Vincent La Forte's picture taken with the Epic
One day this will be the standard for Scarlet cameras too.
This is the first image I have seen from the Epic where the eye detail (on the point of focus/left eye) is razor sharp.

Anyone in this industry that isn't paying attention on Nov. 3rd doesn't have a pulse. It is like Ali vs. Frasier. I can't wait.

A few queried Jim's statement of this being REDs biggest announcement to date.

For mine, I would say Scarlet = the biggest announcement in RED history, because it will clearly empower the most people and subsequently change the most lives and thereby effect the industry more than anything has in a very, very long time.

Changing the cap stone, like RED has done with the Epic is an awesome achievement and has undoubtedly given RED the respect it has always deserved in most corners. Except the bitter, the deluded and the deniers. And who gives a rats ass about them. But this spectacular elite camera, with the utmost respect, still in general, caters to a well established, cashed up and talented few. And the truth is, even without RED the Peter jackson's and James Camerons of this world would continue making great films... (now they'll just be much better :))

But Scarlet... Scarlet will empower at the grass roots. Enmasse. Where the real numbers are. That is massive change. Massive, creative, change.

You hear that phrase "game changer" a lot.
That is not what Scarlet is. Scarlet is potentially and almost certainly I feel an end to exactly that. Game playing. The game of profit first, customer needs second. Shareholder profits V creative empowerment. What's possible vs what's profitable. Genuine human communication and interaction vs company product spin and corporate directives.

Everyone else V RED.

FINALLY the game of paying for crippled gear to best meet company goals of driving profit will be finished.
1080P? Sorry NO. You do not pass go. You do not get my 2000 dollars. You go directly to jail, you greedy, short sighted bastards. We have films and art to make. NOw get the F###** out of our way!

Scarlet will not be an incredible tool, though it will be, it will be the birth of an ideal. A bridge to transformation and widespread creativity. A new age. But with balls. Big, RED cinematic ones.

At last it's time to let love, attention, skill and storytelling truly become the only divider in our wonderful industry.

There will still be a PRO cost, I know. It won't be 3k for 3k. But it will undoubtedly be, get yourself a credit card, and you can get yourself a genuine cinema camera. Or at worst, soon rent one for cheaper than anything else out there of anywhere near it's quality. And THAT will throw the doors wide open for every living motion picture artist in the world.

We all know it. Or at least sense it. You'd have to be a dolt or a hater (one and the same) not too. And that's why we are all going completely nutty over this. Only another RED aspirant can know the feeling me thinks.

It's just so exciting. SO SO SO SO SO EXCITING.

Go RED. Just #@#%@% GOOOOOO!!!!!!

Nov. 3rd will be very telling. It is all about the customer. We'll see who serves the customer best on Nov. 3rd.

Jim

Has anyone made a comment or pointed out that what RED announces and what Canon announces will likely be products in two different catagories? 2/3" DSMC cameras are used for different projects than 4K S35 cameras. What Canon is likely to announce and is trying to compete with has already been released long ago, Epic, Alexa, etc.

That is the number after the recompilation of reduser. The real number is closer to 30,000. Nov. 2009.

Jim

Jim is correct. If you remember, REDuser had a mild stroke back around late '09. Along with things like people's avatars, one of the things we lost was some of the things like previous statistics.

From a couple of reliable sources: There is a reality show testing the Canon prototype in the LA area, and a number of well known Hollywood DPs have seen a preview. 50Mbps 4:22, S35 sensor, adaptable lens mount. Didn't hear the 4K part, but it makes sense. Based on what we believe is coming from Red, Scarlet seems like the easy winner: modularity, Red Code, RAW, and continued innovation from a company the "gets it." The Canon offer will make a big splash, no doubt, but I'll be hanging on to my Epic. Epic is in a different league than the new Canon, based on the rumors. In fact, you'd have to shoot me to take my Epic. Even then, you couldn't pry it from my cold dead hands. Jim and the Red team have given me the best single camera tool I have ever used over a long time in the business. I loved my 16SR in the 80's, I thought the 435 was a terrific camera, but Epic is sheer creative, design, ergonomic, ease of use genius.

I can't say anything at the moment but that Canon has far better color management especially

with skin tones than Alexa (digital plastic skin tones) and Epic (difficult to grade skin tones later if you didn't nail it at the first shot).

RAW with skin tones is not so helpful with Alexa (ARRI RAW) and Epic is still in much better position....

But Canon rocks and that's one really BIG advantage for Canon and all other things will be unwrapped at Nov 3rd...

I hope Canon makes a really good camera so I can get my Scarlet asp! Im sure Scarlet will shoot "raw dropping" images!

I guess we all really see color differently because I don't. Like canon color handling.

50Mbps is even low for 1080, let alone a 4k frame. 50Mbps is good for standard def DVCPro 50.

Maybe they have something similar to redray redcode, but from a company praising hdv or h264, I highly doubt it...

Really? Getting pretty stunning images from a hacked GH2 at 42Mb/s. A lot more to this stuff than bitrates. REDCODE is by far one of the most robust of the compressed codecs out there, and the AVCHD codec, even at 150+ Mb/s that some people are using on their GH2s does not really compare, but it's still of very good quality and better than standard Def.

I'm of course talking about viewing on a normal size 1080 TV. As screen size increases, you are probably correct.

Steve, I only discovered the GH2 a few nights ago and was blown away, if I could off load my 7d for gh2 hacked I would. This footage here blew me away.
