  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nov 3rd Scarlet Prediction

What's curious about your observation is that the side handle was, all along, supposed to work on the Scarlet - as we have seen with Ted in his travels with the Scarlet Fixed. And, to be honest, I can't imagine that it no longer does. (But, what do I know.)

So, how does that fit into the "evidence" that the web site holds keys to what Nov 3rd will bring. If RED is "spot on" with their compatibility chart on RED.com, then the side handle no longer works with Scarlet while all lenses and LCDs do. Then again, nothing is indicated next to the matte box - what does that mean?

And, what seems "obvious" to some is not at all so to others.

Only 5 days left...

Touche, good points Terry.

It is odd considering if they do release a fixed that the SideHandle was not only a power option but also a tool for AF. Then again so was the 5" touchscreen. At the end I guess it's all really speculation. But I do think in some manner the lenses will work. I believe this due to the whole "upgradeable" part of the DSMC system. I could be wrong.

haha. I really do need to stay off here for the next 5 days or so. It's going to get crazy around here.

I dont understand why people are so against the idea that Red would make the scarlet S35 & 4k ... CANON is putting out a 4k S35 camera for around 10k - 15k. Reds main goal is to beat the hell out of the competition. They definitely will make it S35 & interchangeable & i'm thinking 4k... in 2008 he said 3k for 3k. Its now almost 2012. 4k is Not out of the question. EPIC is always going to be better then the Scarlet even at those specs. and Big budget films put $100,000 glass on it. Scarlet will have HALF the info thru put. So people who don't need that, will get scarlet. Scarlet is the money maker. Its the quantity of there business.

Why am I against it? Because its just really unlikely and if it materialized would be too expensive. Is it confirmed Canon is announcing a sub $15k 4K camera? Or speculation? So, Red is going to scrap 3 years of development and produce something new in 6 months? That seems incredibly unlikely.

Why dont I just want them to release Epic S? Because it was last priced at $12k, considering the price of epic it can't go lower than that, and then id still need to buy thousands of $ in accessories, pricing me out of the market. Would I like a sub $10k s35 sensor red camera and lens combo? Fuck yeah, but I realize that is nothing more than a fantasy.

I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding of some here who think that because some of us believe a 4K and/or s35 sensor is unlikely, that we are somehow against it. Speaking for myself, it isn't at all about being for or against - it's about the reality and logic and probability. Given all that has gone on for the last year+ and what we have seen about the development of the various cameras, I just don't believe a substantial hardware change along these lines is likely. I do, however, think that any number of huge improvements may have been made in software/firmware that could be extremely impressive, such as an uprezzing algorithm or a path down the light map road.

For my part, I think a 2/3rds sensor capturing a 3K image is what we are fundamentally going to get in the Scarlet -- and I am thrilled with that idea. If it turns out to be 4K, I will be surprised but certainly not "against" it. If it turns out to be s35, I'll be even more surprised and, to be honest, might have some disappointment, particularly if some of the other previously billed Scarlet features are compromised. But I'll probably be more surprised than disappointed.

And Jeffrey - of course, if there is a PL mount option for any Scarlet, the RED lenses will work (I think). They just might not be all that practical.

I'm with Terry here. It's not that anyone doesn't want 4K or S35, some don't for format reasons, but besides that most wouldn't mind it. There is just reality that comes into play, cost, re-production etc. Like Terry said.

Playing devils advocate though, and I'm in no way expecting this...When people test a product, they likely don't just have 1 version. There are usually several prototypes, different tech, build, sensors, etc. We don't know what RED does behind closed doors. For all we know they've been testing and developing something that is S35 or 4K against what was announced. This could totally throw a curveball at the competition, thinking they know what to expect. Is this likely, probably not. But to think that it hasn't been tested or thought about in some form or way might be a bit off. And maybe it hasn't, and maybe we'll never know.

HDRX should be beneficial to shooters doing event-type work, where light and shadow contrasts can’t always be anticipated. Nice to know that one can switch to a mode (albeit, consuming more storage space) that will deal more effectively with (smooth out) unexpected harsh contrasts.

I see your points.
But question is, why then buying a RED Scarlet if I could find that all (interchangable, S35, 4k) in about the same price range in the new Canon (software and codec aside)?

Because what you put in your 'aside' is what many are coming to RED for.

There will be many large sensor 1080p+ alternatives in the $10.000-15.000 arena.

My upper comment refered to Scarlet not Epic.

But in case of Scarlet, putting codec over sensor and the possibility of changing the lens isn't really ideal, or?

Well it seems that the final nail has been hammered into the coffin for all who were hoping to get a 2/3 fixed with a 6K-ish price tag.
All the logic that has been applied to justify why would there still be a 2/3 fixed doesn't have big flaws but in essence it was coming more from the heart center, as opposed to reason center (details in the quoted post.)

I don't want to sound patronizing...

All that might be dissapointed with the Nov3rd announcement should remember that there were a lot of people against of introduction of HDRx - actually against the 1K $ price increase. Then there were a lot of patronizing posts about how Scarlet needs to be at the cutting tech edge and if it is out of reach for someone's budget they should not buy it. We'll the hard truth will probably repeat for more ppl on Nov 3rd.
My simpathy goes for all that will not be able to afford a Scarlet and were hoping and waiting her for years. I just hope I will not have to feel sympathy for myself.

I dont think they would scrap 3 years of work... mild changes and its probably cheaper to produce one sensor then two different sensors... your whole camera line has S35.. thats one place making all the sensors. And u just proved my point... You & I & thousands of other scarlet buyers wouldn't buy a epic -s for 12k-18k (fully shooting) but if they make it a bit cheaper the fuck yea RIGHT? I think its reasonable and the way they are going.

Scarlet is now a professional camera. It will be more expensive. And there will be no discounts for RED ONE owners.

That is all the bad news there is...

Do you want a cookie?

I still don't think you've proven anything to this point. Sure you could be right, but we still don't know any spec's. Maybe you should reserve your bragging until the 3rd. I won't say your right or wrong, but you know as much as the rest of us. The only thing that says is the camera is pro.... (already established) will cost more (many planned on that) and there is no discount for RED ONE owners.

Please point me to what you can prove.
