  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nov 3rd Scarlet Prediction

Do you want a cookie?

I still don't think you've proven anything to this point. Sure you could be right, but we still don't know any spec's. Maybe you should reserve your bragging until the 3rd. I won't say your right or wrong, but you know as much as the rest of us. The only thing that says is the camera is pro.... (already established) will cost more (many planned on that) and there is no discount for RED ONE owners.

Please point me to what you can prove.

IM actually vegan, I dont eat cookies... its replacing the red... ITll be S35 and 4k... pro camera

Agreed. But what many seem to fail to see is that it is ONLY the price that has changed.

It's still Ted's Scarlet, but with a higher price.
Really? Jim said that the only bad news was the price increase. That it's the same Scarlet is hardly good news. That is, at best, neutral news.

I'm even more convinced than ever that it's still a 2/3 sensor. I think the 8x fixed lenses is still likely, maybe redesigned a little after the tsunami damage. Surprise could be removable version also!?

Resolution, I am not so sure. Jim talks up 4K+ so maybe more resolution on a 2/3 sensor?

I am thinking $7500 for something very similar to what Ted was showing around. Side handle specs will be interesting, if different than Epic.

Just a nobody that checks this site every day. I love to see excellence at work. Very excited about Thursday! Duh!

I honestly don't know what to think now. I think Frank could be right. It might be S35. If the price goes up as much as Jim's post in Recon seems to suggest it might -- I didn't read that post as promising a small price increase... I read it as being a 100% increase or more -- then I'm suspecting I'm going to be quite disappointed on Thursday. I guess I could spend that $10K I have lined up on another GH2, Production Premium 5.5, new lights, and better sound equipment and have some left over. But... I really want to be a RED owner, as much for the stills aspect of the DSMC concept as the motion aspect.

Here's hoping I still can be. The GH2 hack is fantastic for the price, but I want RAW, 16-bit, 13 stops of dynamic range, and the ability to overcrank and undercrank. Things I cannot even remotely get with a GH2.

Here is my SCARLET prediction. I think it makes some sense.

There will be a SCARLET fixed - there is a professional demand for such a thing. This will be the "affordable" version $12-$15K.

Beyond that, SCARLET will be EPIC in every sense of the word, with the ability to "unlock" its feature set through purchased firmware upgrades or keys. It will be released with 4K enabled. You pay a base price similar to RED ONE but you get HDRx, Magic Motion, short start-up times, lightweight form factor, etc.

When you're ready or want the rest of the features, you pay for a key - you can upgrade the same box to 5K, enable more frame speeds, etc.

Everyone buys the same box and pay-as-you-go for extra feature sets.

RED wins...fewer production lines, they can keep cranking their existing EPIC lines, which are already capable of pushing out cameras-to-order.

For users, it will be a little like paying for an EPIC on an installment plan, so you don't have to bite the whole apple at once. Or only bite as much as you need, and get all the 4K+ goodness.

There will be a 2/3 model and an S35 model - 2/3 has desirable applications for 3D and documentary.

I dont think it will be that much. It was at 6 grand before... i think its gonna be around 8 or 9 now...

=)

Well, looking at this rowdy crowd, I'd say Scarlet's imminent release is one notch up from 'neutral'. Hehe..

What Jim stated was simply that the price is all the bad news. That has no implication that there might be other, good news.

I do have a strong feeling though, that RED has an ace or two come November 3rd.

Ted's Scarlet is very complete with Side handle, SSD, Redmote and 5" Pro LCD. If this is what RED releases some might call this 'neutral', but in fact is pretty rich.

Maybe there are some exciting news on the REDCode side that have a real impact on the quality that Scarlet can deliver? That would be good too.

The one crazy move that I hold as a real outsider, is RED sort of migrating RED One into Scarlet. RED One is pretty mature and wouldn't need all the R&D that I otherwise associate with a new camera.

This would, then, in fact be very close to what everyone wants: big sensor, interchangeable...

But I sort of remember Jim scoffing at the idea of people wanting a RED ONE for the then perceived price of a Scarlet ($6000).

RED One has been what, $17.500(??) for a while. RED traded in quite a few.

If we slippery-slope Scarlet into the $11.000 range it almost seems doable.

All in all, something about November 3rd is ajar. And not all things add up. By backtracking all the statements after the launch, one can probably learn a lot–for better or worse.

A lot has changed since then. I believe that means abandoning the sub-$10K market, not just another grand or two...we'll see Nov. 3rd. There is a lot of wishful thinking going on, while ignoring the price increases which have already affected EPIC and its accessories. I believe SCARLET will more resemble a replacement for the RED ONE price point and feature set than it will satisfy the sub-$10K market. RED has gone through a major identity shift over the past year, in terms of finding/inventing their market. Feature set changes have been quantum leaps forward, not incremental, and prices have already leaped forward to match. RED will be pricing SCARLET against its own product mix, not so much against what the other guys are doing -

Realistically, at the previously announced brain prices, the 2/3" fixed has been over $10k for a practical field package for a couple of years now.

I do think a 4k S35 model will be part of the Scarlet announcement. 2/3" fixed will still be in the mix if they can get the parts to produce it. Not sure about a 2/3" interchangeable though.

S35 model likely will replace Red 1, but I think it will price out closer to the F3 range or about what the R1 originally cost for a complete basic package. Brain price may fall somewhere under $10k.

In the Recon forum Jim has all but confirmed that Scarlet is still 2/3" at 3k.

Someone suggested 4k 72fps. Jim's response was "Sounds like Epic", "not even close" and to "lower expectations".

Then Canons release was listed. Lot's of nice features but "only" 2k recording.

Jim's response was "I'm betting three of a kind beats a pair".

For reasons unknown to me, people started to think he was talking about number of camera bodies, when in fact he's commenting on resolution.

Jim is such a die hard believer in resolution that he fully expects 2/3" at 3k to trump S35 at 2k.

RED still has RAW, which is a really big deal, but I no longer think that November 3. will be a victory parade for RED. Both Canon and RED will present very potent solutions and they will attract their own group of followers respectively.

If this is true then what would the price increase be for?

The $6.000 price tag was always too cheap. At least for Ted's camera.

But sometimes a company might want to take a hit by releasing a revolutionary product to gain traction and market share.

Add to this the fact that the fixed lens itself probably got more expensive after Japan's tragedies and it's not hard to see why the price has gone up.

But Jim has only said that there's a price increase. He didn't say twice as expensive or anything like that. Might be $7.500 now, who knows?

And his reference in this thread was strangely "3k for $3k". Maybe the revolution is 3k for less than expected these last months. like 3k for $4k.

I doubt it very much, I think it will definitely be more than $6,000 but not completely out of reach of most of us. What I found odd in the "Scarlet Preview..." post was than Jim said that "Scarlet is now a professional camera". They had always said that Scarlet was a pro camera and shied away from calling it prosumer despite the price tag. I don't really know why he would say "now" because that tells me that it wasn't before even though they had marketed that way.

True, but he didn't say anything about the sensor size. It could still be S35 with 3K. It could be reasonable since no additional ASICs would be needed for 4K processing.
Depending on which of Jim's post we quote logic sways in different directions. If the Scarlet is still 2/3" on 3K I'm trying really hard but cannot think of what would blow me away on Nov3rd - same specs for higher price - for me personally it is not logical. Would Jim talk to us not to be frustrated by the change in the Change thread just becuase of the price increase? My guess is good as anyones but I strongly doubt Jim would increase the price (even though forced by the component pricing) wihtout throwing in additional features.
