  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everyone says one reason why people love the Alexa is the ProRes module that makes it faster to get into post.

Obviously, I'm sure Red has heard this, listened and is acting accordingly.

But what if Red took it one step further ... since not everyone edits with Pro Res or on FCP, why not a module that not only offered Pro Res but DNxHD ... Cineform ... and more?

Seems that would not only match Arri but "one up" them on the primary feature advantage they have on Red.

Thoughts?

RED is increasing the workflow flexibility on Epic and Scarlet with Proxy Modules… the first of which is an H.264 Module.

This module encodes a 1080P stream (high quality scale from full frame) and records to Compact Flash in a rear module. The module also offers secure password protected streaming over dedicated WiFi and ethernet to iPhones, iPads, laptops as well as broadcast to the internet.

This will be beneficial for on set viewing, instant dailies, offline editing, easy file transfer to remote locations, dailies review and collaboration services with such companies as Pix, or live broadcasting for realtime media distribution.

The modules will also support full metadata and XML for editorial.

Availability will be September 2010 and the price will be $2500.

Sounds to me like multiple modules for multiple codecs are on the roadmap. The details of which codecs will be offered and in what order they will be released, however, remain uncertain. And, of course, it doesn't look like Sep. 2010 is going to be a realistic date to expect to have yours in your hands.

to implement dnxhd red would have to pay a licence fee to avid.
so i guess if there is something, than it will be a prores module.
but then again, you dont know if debayering technices advance or nle's evolve and start using a rocket for fulltime playback....than i guess there will be no offline module.
but ljke u guess, this is only my guess :)

Oh, something more :)

"For product manufacturers who are interested in working with Avid to implement Avid DNxHD encoding into their products, contact your local Avid Sales Office"

Great comments, thanks guys. But part of my question was ... does anyone think it's possible (or helpful) to have ONE MODULE that does all the main codecs ... is that technologically too much to ask?

potentially.

you could have a general processor or multiple processors for each codec bundled together.

at extra cost.

Cinedeck Extreme does it (Uncompressed, Pro Res, DNXHD & Cineform) in 4:4:4 up to 2K and gives a monitor and playback all in a tidy little package not much bigger than the average red module (assumption based on photos). Don't see why it can't be done but the Cinedeck is a fairly expensive little beast relative to announced module prices so far and the price of RED's cameras though on balance pretty good value for what it does.
(It's about £8000 GBP before tax and then there's SSD media on top.)

i wouldn't get too excited at the idea. Jim has mentioned that H264 and Prores are in the works, but you forget it's all about RAW R3d's for these guys. They have built their whole system and tech around this and not baked in video paths. I think it's a great idea, but just not likely.

It is true that the Epic will have a 23.976 1080P output that can be connected to a number of third party devices, e.g. Cindeck, Ki Pro, nanoFlash.

Yes, EPIC has a 1080p HD-SDI output that can be connected to a variety of external devices... 23.976 is one of the frame rates supported.

must be a obvious answer (yes) but wanted to ask anyway, does the epic do hdmi and sdi output at the same time? so we can be running every kind of monitoring/recording option we want?

yeah lets face facts here, do you really want a baked in image? every POS camera i own already does this. i want red specifically for the raw/ other high end features.... the way i see it is maybe the workflow with a baked in pro res would be harder given the real world lighting constraints indys face with low/no budgets. your probably going to need color correction reguardless and having more to pull and tweak is going to be better than having less... that and CS5 helps a bit too, with many codecs it works better not even just red files, even my stupid handycam has a faster workflow with cs5 than fcp...!!! i bet fcp will soon have better native red support thus negating the pro res need... but reguardless i still personally would rather not have a baked in look...

Oh and I guess I should of included the question of bit depth ...8 or 10 and YUV or RGB options?

Thanks again

I'm going to take a guess at this. FWIU, the camera does a full realtime debayer. I believe single link HD-SDI can be no greater than 10-bit 4:2:2 (HDMI can actually be much higher).

So those are my guesses FWTW. Hope Stuart gives us the real skinny.
