  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Not sure if this has been brought up much but I'm noticing some very strange noise in B30 that is reminiscent of very early builds on the camera. For want of a better word it's speckled, and reminds me a bit of the crows feet. When I first noticed it I did a black shade calibration. I've since installed B30 again, tested, gone to B21 again, tested, redownloaded B30 and installed again and tested and it's there on all of the rushes on B30.

If I get a chance later I'll post some screen shots of the blue channel. It's more noticeable when you go in 1 to 1 and scrub through the R3D and compare the noise on both.

I did a greenscreen shoot the other week and that's when i first really noticed it. I have one on Monday and will probably go back to B21 because the noise seems a lot better on this build.

My camera is non MX and I was using the old Redcine to playback the files. I've seen it in RC-x too.

Anyone else noticed this much? Any solutions out there? I'd like the features of B30 but not at cost to a better image.
Cheers
Paul

Power up the camera.
Let it run for about 45 minutes.
Do a black shading calibration.

You can also file a support ticket with RED and send them a camera log, but a very frequent answer seems to be BLACK SHADING

As to noise, B30 is definitely a compromise. Noise vs over all useability, ease of use and simple ways to good enough results.

I could def get less noisy images on close to all previous builds (including pre 21), but the overall userexperience, logic and results are much better with 30.

That said, I cab see how a GS/BS shoot could gain from B21.

For many occations, noise is not the main parameter. For a GS shoot it's kind of important... -:)

I noticed the same.
here is a 100% crop of the blue channel. Shot outside on build 30

I did do a black shading a few times but that didn't solve it.
Just installed build 21 and the blue channel seems ok again.

is this similar to what you got?

Geez. . . I hate noise. . . hope it's non-MX.

:-(

Gotta be M, right? I thought MX wouldn't work with earlier builds...

I have this too - build 30 M camera, shooting 4.5k Redcode 36. Still attached is a 100% crop from a full res, full-debayer, uncorrected TIFF, showing R,G,B channels from left to right. (its been jpeg'd for the internet, but the point is very clear anyway)

To be fair, I hadn't noticed it as I've not shot anything requiring chroma keying on build 30. As far as I can see its in all conditions, but its only clearly visible where there are areas of soft focus and smooth colour graduation.

ps... apologies for the giant image of my camera assistant's fuzzy chin :P

No input from Red yet - have you guys submitted Support tickets?

Just about to - I'm betting this is more widespread than this thread suggests though. Not many shooters, even the pixel-peeping sort on here go poking around in their channels, and post-guys are unlikely to push back to the production team that the camera has a problem based on the footage. Lets be honest, compared to some of the rubbish I get sent my way for effects work its not all that bad, we're just spoilt with the clean image the Red usually gives.

I've been in touch with Red on a support ticket with this issue. I was advised to check my black shading, and to try a 'restore' for the black shading too. Today I had time spare to check this thoroughly, and I can confirm that at least for my camera, this is a repeatable and constant build 30 issue. I was very thorough in checking everything over and shot comparisons between build 21 and build 30, all with correct black shading even temperatures etc etc.

I've resubmitted my ticket, so I'll see what Red say through the official route, but I thought I'd share the results here too.

Nice big 100% crop image to check out:

Please! Share with us what RED told you!

Seeing this thread I checked the Blue Channel in some shots of the documentary we finished shooting this tuesday and find that same kind of noise. Then I saw the images were quite noisy. First I thought it was 'cause we shot 2K (for production and HDD space reasons) but some shots we did in 4K show exactly the same noise.

For your information, we did a Black Shading every day (we waited 'till the camera was hot to do it), and some times even 2 times a days if the temperature changed noticeably.

Really curios to know what RED thinks about all this...

This is pretty typical for B30, from what I've seen...

I still think the overall performace of B30 far outweights the B21.

Especially if you choose to WB your images before grading.

B21 (and earlier) can be a lot more noisefree if you start off with native settings with -0,4 - -2 in exposure/ISO settings, go redlog and grade from 5600k, but if you want to WB your images prior to grading, B30 is the works.

If you're about to key something, I'd still pull the key from redlog/native, though...

But you could of course post it with B21 tools...
