  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shooting at slow shutter speed, 1fps with a 1/2 shutter in Varispeed mode. Image picks up what looks like dust or pixel drop out . Goes away with shutter above 1/12.At 6 fps, issue goes away at 1/6 shutter or above. Has this always been there or is it a build 32 issue? Or something else? Thanks.

Are you black shading at the slow shutter speed?

Remember anytime you make a large shutter speed adjustment it's best to apply a black shade for that given speed to maintain the "cleanest" possible image.

Wow... I completely spaced that. Thanks. I'll try that.

Thanks for the quick response!

Mark, so funny. I started a thread just over a year ago with almost identical content. Phil was there for the rescue with the same reasoning, and is again. Good to see you as a mod now Phil.

If it helps mark, I haven't made that mistake since. Good lessons to learn, to always watch the temperature of the sensor to see if it's in the green.

Heh. I was "knighted" not long ago. Nice surprise.

Here's something fun you can do. Now you can actually export black shades to a REDMAG, which you can then copy over to a computer of some sort. Then you just have them on hand. It does take a moment to apply them though.

However, now that black shading doesn't take that long, you might find it's just easier to knock out a quick one between over and under cranked shots then back to normal speed.

That was it! Thanks. I should have remembered that but hey, I just had my 57th B-day on Monday so...

For black shades on redmags , here is what I do right now:

a> Save black shade out to Redmag in camera.
b> Shoot a bunch of shots filling the redmag.
c> plug redmag into computer for download of r3d's
d> save blackshade to computer.
e> put redmag back into camera
f> format redmag ( clears blackshade data as well )
g> put redmag back into computer, copy blashade back to redmag again
h> plug redmag back into camera for continued shooting.

To shortcut some of this, how can I format the Redmag whilst on the computer, so I can avoid the 2 redmag swaps to get the blackshade back ?

Whoa. You can actually save a bunch of time here by:

- Get the camera up to temp.
- Set the desired shutter speed and frame rate
- In the Calibration Menu under Sensor uncheck "Save as user HS", then check "Save To Media"
- Run calibration.

This dumps the Black Shading Sensor Calibrations to the REDMAG.

Then just repeat that step for each shutter speed and frame rate combination you want. The calibrations will be listed by milliseconds and date in the folder and file name. Don't re-format the card or anything. Then you have a REDMAG with a bunch of specific calibrations on hand that you can dump to a computer or upload and apply to the camera via "Calibration Management".

While with MX sensor we always do that, with Dragon on "The RED dress" short after black shading the camera for 24fps, I also shot some High Speed 86fps Fashion shots in Portrait mode in stage 2 at Red Studios, Stage 2 for those that do not know, is one of Jarred coolest ideas, which it turned that stage in a HUGE Black Cyclorama, and we can not see a single spec of NOISE.

But I of course suggest that a Black Shading be done at shooting temperature, and Shooting Frame Rates ISO, shutter etc.

Simply Set up your camera for the shoot, then Black Shade to current settings.

Phil,
My 'step a' has it cover in saving to red mag.
My issue is how to keep the cal files persistent ?
Do you not format, or format on PC ?
formatting destroys the data unfortunately.
