  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Noise on the low end but even worse scary megenta lines

Graeme,

Yes, but as i told Red Support which i thought they said they were going to pass on to you was that after i do the black shading i still noticed that slow shutter rates like 1/48 were much much cleaner and less noisy then say 1/120 even after black shading at temp and everything. If you wouldn't mind testing that (after you have a break) to see if there is more noise after black shading at shutter 1/120 and above that would be great.

Jacob, I can ask to have a shutter ramp shot and then take a look and see what I can see. I presume when you decrease the shutter angle you're compensating by opening up the lens a stop so that we're talking about equal amount of light being recorded by the sensor?

Graeme

Ok. I'll get that sequence ordered up and will take a look.

Updated the chart, had the MX at a disadvantage. Thanks Eric.

Can you clarify what was updated or changed in the photo?

Just the top slide, MX was 1 stop brighter in the midtones up in the left chart. Metadata error. Fixed it. Nothing changed in the shadow/noise of MX and nothing changed in any of the Dragon slides.

Thanks Jarred and Graeme, the new Cal looks great!

Any guess when it might go public?

We have a couple more tests to do on Monday so will not know till those are done. After that its off to Rob to button up Graeme's code and put inside RCX and the SDK as well as the camera guys roll into a build ( which the work is already done on that side ) .

Oh wow, so hopefully next week or the week after? Either way, well done. /fistbump

Okay , thanks, but before you updated the test image, the Dragon seemed to me to have 3 stops more Highlight Lat than the MX, but
now the updated slide makes me think the Dragon only has 2 stops more Highlight Lat than the MX. Perhaps I'm reading it wrong.

Good night from the east coast.

I'm a little freaked out by how amazing the difference is in these charts.

Not against noise reduction on an RGB output... that kind of thing needs to happen in the ASIC though so it will need to go on the long term list.

Thanks Jarred, this would be an awesome option to have. One less excuse producers and shooters have to choose another system. I love shooting RED and would love to use it on every shoot. In camera NR would make it an every shoot kind of camera. Thanks for considering it as an in camera option.

Hey Jared, is this update something that will only affect new footage to be shot or will the updates to RCX improve footage that's been shot?

Also, I've noticed a bit of "horizontal lines" in the noise, is that something that is related to the CMOS artifact that was brought up at the start of the thread?

Regardless, all I've seen thus far from the Dragon is leaps and bounds better than MX and I was already plenty happy with the results from well shot MX footage.

Cheers,
-Alan

Since have been here among many other since those days R1 was still in its infancy on drawing table, it's highly interesting to see how the design work has persistently progressed towards more subtle details within time. This kind of statement already reveals there is quite a lot of experience mileage behind.

Graeme, the new calibration looks simply wonderful. It also looks like the Dragon noise can be removed more effectively in post with standard tools.
