  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No more Apple Thunderbolt Displays

Giving people a heads up that the (old) monitors are being discontinued will avoid any bitter taste should a new design pop out of the fruitstore in a few months.

With their push towards wide colour support in macOS, with the option of 16 bits/pixel ... I wonder what the future holds?

Thunderbolt displays support 10bits per channel via switchresX in "the captain".

As a matter of fact, so does every imac produced in the last 5 years (via switchresX)

My bet is that Thunderbolt 3 displays come out (4k or 5k resolution) or a Apple TV (with built-in display) that can double as a monitor... or none of the above. Be nice if it was touch screen or motion detected like in that Tom Cruise movie...but perhaps I'm just ahead of the times.

Thunderbolt 3 displays will be 4K, as the hardware is built around DisplayPort 1.2 and everything coming out in GPUs is built around 4K. Intel claims the new connector can do 5K by using MST, but we've had no actual demonstration of that. We all remember how horrible that was when it was used for 4K. Apple will stick with 4K because that's what consumers need and want and because they are going introduce UHD downloads on iTunes once they transition to Kaby Lake next year, which has full HEVC decoding and is designed for UHD displays. Right now, Apple is taking a look at the possible futures for Apple TV and figuring out a five year plan for it, based on what users are telling them through surveys.

The fact that they are now overtly encouraging people to buy other brands makes me think that it will be quite awhile for a new display, if ever. They never do that when a refresh is imminent.

I have to agree. No company would discontinue a product and tell customers to shop elsewhere if they had a new product in the pipeline. Along with this I wouldn't expect an updated MacPro for a year or 2 either.

The rumors have it that there could be a new Mac Pro announcement end of this year or early next. I'm hoping their advertising catch phrase will be, "the Trashcan that really works this time!"
