  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No excuse for 5K@24P on Scarlet

It may not be as easy as you guys think to add 4.5k to Scarlet. They can't just import the code from the RED ONE. It has to be written from scratch and it's not really something you hear Epic users wanting. It's pretty clear that Scarlet owners get most everything that has been written for Epic if our hardware supports it. Let's see what v4.0 brings next month. There may be a few surprises.

Brandon, they won't import the code from the Red One. Most likely Red One uses a different structure, and maybe a different programming language as well. However epic and scarlet have the same language and same structure. Firmware updates and features are updated simultaneously. They are exactly the same except for the frame rates, and compression ratios. I believe Red can very easily modify the scarlet capabilities. The big question is, whether they want to or not. And if yes, by how much. As I've said elsewhere, Red will push epic's current hardware to its limits. On the other hand, they won't do that to the Scarlet, even if it's possible. They want to protect the Epic. And that is very reasonable.

It's totally different and more complicated.

Maybe they are pushing Scarlet to the limit too? We don't know. I want 4.5k/5k as well, but we bought a 4k camera. We can't expect or demand more. Just hope... :)

I wish for 5K motion actually. In order to resolve a decent 4K. 5K is required. 4.5K doesn't make a big difference. Also although its nice to have 120fps at 2K, when considering the cropping issues, 2K is not very usable for me. Its not decent HD. To resolve a decent quality HD, 3K at least is required. If you shoot a 4K clip and a 3K clip, and downsample to 1080p, you will see a difference between them.

I'll just leave this here:

Must say I'm happy with the Battle Testesd Scarlet that I bought knowing the specs. Saying that...

The 120fps is brilliant but in my opinion the res is too low. If it were technically possible and RED would consider it from a business point of view I for one would be extremely happy to have 120fps at 2 or 3K. 120fps at 2K would then at least rival the FS700 but from REDs point of view would it swing people towards a Scarlet when they should be buying an Epic?

I'am happy with my scarlet-x 1300, but: the sensor inside is 5K, (I don't need 5K EPIC at 96 fps). I need 4.5K to out in 4K. The 4.5K is = to 4K for VFX, stabilization, post-operation. etc.

PS: Never mind those who simply can not afford Epic - right? :reddevil:[/QUOTE]

Peter, with all due respect. It would be like asking volkswagon for a bentley's performance, same company, why not? cmon, when is is enough , enough? I think if you wait im sure your scarlet will get a tune up one day.

Not demanding anything but if possible, 5k WS 24fps would be sweeeeeeeeet!

I understand Epic owners protecting their cameras. They don't want a camera that costs half the price to get closer to theirs. But here is a scarlet area. And as a scarlet owner, i see now a more capable camera for half the price of mine. People are not asking for 5k 3:1, just at least 4.5k, like the red one. And hey, your epic is no more 4 times the price, just twice. It's some fair hope.

Although I agree with a couple things, however the Scarlet is pushed no where near its limits. Whoever bought the Red One also bought a 4K camera, but they all ended with a 4.5K camera. Red recently claimed once again that everything changes, including price. So I'd wonder, if they are capable to reduce the price tag of a camera such as the Epic by that huge amount, aren't they capable of making the Scarlet even more valuable by pushing the frame rates and some other things?! At the moment, the Epic's price and feature combination is killer to the competition. The Scarlet, well... hmm 4K 30FPS, 60 fps @ 2K windowed (2K - problem with lenses, noiser, resolution not good). If one looks at simple logistics, I'd say it need's an upgrade. Including 5K on Scarlet, Red will be able to claim that their cameras are now all 5K upwards, and resolve into true 4K debayered, that's already a whole step above the competition and what's coming out soon. Of course better frame rates at higher resolutions are also great. And after all having this through firmware update doesn't cost them a big of a deal, like upgrading hardware. Of course, everyone shall fully understand that the Epic has to be cleary more capable for obvious reasons.

I agree:

I would not expect anything to be done about this until Dragon has been released anyway. I would expect at that point RED could release a firmware for Scarlet to improve it to at or better than R1 specs (of course by then R1 would be completely sold out anyway) and then Epic users would simply have an option to purchase Dragon for $6000 if they wanted to distance themselves from Scarlet.

Ok so this is the concept, so now that we are all asking for freebies, I would like my Epics to do 600fps at 3:1 compression 5K 2:1 apect ratio ...pleeeease!!

There's no point in moking people Sergio. I'm sure if that was possible, Red will surely find no problem in pushing their flagship camera even further. After all the Epics are ones that had the big discount, which for most people was great news. But if the recent price drop frustrated you somehow, I'm sorry but that's not Scarlet owner's problem either.
