Here's a poll specifically for what NLE system you will EDIT your RED footage on. Please EXCLUDE other platforms you will use for other aspects of post - EDIT system only.

I notice that your poll breaks out Avid on both PC and MAC platforms but for Premiere, you show but a single choice. Premiere is now available for both PCs and Intel based MACs. I know a number of FCP users that are considering Premiere, now that it runs on their hardware they like having a choice of NLEs. The cross platform compatibility isn't a bad thing either.

yeah, that's a good call - I'd add/change that in the POLL but I don't know how to edit the POLL - moderator?

I couldn't vote.

It depends on the nature of the project - either Avid or FCP.

If it's more effects-heavy - FCP (more easy to stack layers / previs for compositing / etc).

If it's more narrative - Avid (there's a reason most features are cut on it).

Oh, and with Avid I get a dongle that works on both Mac and PC. So I would be platform-agnostic - probably work on both through the course of the project.

Brook you are funny! I think the big ones has two all beef patties, special sauce, pickles, cheese, lettuce, onions on a sesame seed bun.

No, I am pretty sure its a very common DSP function know as a 'MAC' or 'multiply accumulate'.

I find it very sad that Avid on either platform has such a poor following. I don't get it. I think FCP sales have been boosted by clever marketing more than technical innovation, it's the "have to have" at the moment but if you look at the number of feature films that are cut on Avid compared to FCP, you'll see a different trend. I wonder how long the "in" thing will last.

I wonder how many people that use FCP also bought or will buy an iphone, I'm telling you, clever marketing, that's all it is.

I´ll wait for the FCP Studio 3 Upgrade which will enable the 4k editing/Color grading on the Iphone ;) and direkt WLAN playout f 4k Films to the RED BEAMER

I picked other because

I prefer Vegas and will wait to see what options are available in their upcoming 64bit version. If it doesn't support 10bit color and/or Redcode via Quicktime, then I'll check out Adobe. If Adobe doesn't support RedCode then I'll have to check out FCP. Avid is not part of the equation.

Software stopped being a religion for me a long long time ago. I'll go with what meets my needs.

I beg to differ.

I don't want to get into the old, boring AVID vs. FCP conversations - but I can assure you - MORE and MORE features, including studio films, are cut on FCP everyday.

Yeah, Apple is good at "clever" marketing ... just like Avid is good at alienating it's customer base -

What I think is interesting here (and yeah, this poll has WAY to few voters to be a solid representation) is that ADOBE is holding it's own against AVID. My opinion is that ADOBE will continue to pick up market share as AVID fumbles ... we shall see ... but the future ... like it or not ... of NLE is FCP.

In my opinion, Apple went after the lower-budget end much more aggressively than Avid did. The lower-budget side has a lot more volume than the high-end. Avid responded by releasing a watered-down version of its product at the same price point. They would likely have more volume (in units) had they released the software Media Composer at FCP's price point. (But then they wouldn't be making as much profit?)

At the high-end, Avid does have more market-share... but that market isn't very big.

My thinking. I just wait. Lets force that with a poll. At Apple

Sounds enviably unpassionate. I like to handle it that way too, but somehow I still prefer Avid though the support and development is so poor. But for some projects other tools are better.
Even if I don't like 'em. Thats how I came to finally use FCP occasionally.

Its another market. I believe Avid isn't gaining that much of a profit from Editing anymore anyway. They were pioneers at that time, filled the market and moved to other markets like newsservices, contentmangement and playoutserver. Might be wrong business strategy, but so its reasonable that the Composer is an "editing tool" which proved it's working long time ago. Why making big steps ?
It surely isn't clever what Avid was or is doing and somehow a pity because it was so great a while ago. Maybe they should have released the SW only Composer more than that year ago and maybe for an even lower price. But how could they have done it without getting people upset who paid 80k for a system 2 years before that ?
It's good that there was Apple shaking up the market.

Vegas is gaining ground against Avid in the ENG market. It's becoming very popular because it edits Mpeg2 files very well. No transcoding if you don't want to. Capture, edit, output all in Mpeg2 if needed. That translates to reduced turn around times for field crews. When Ted Copel was running NightLine, they used it extensively. I heard AP was adding Vegas to their production pipeline.
