Ok, so I'm finally getting away from FCP... looking for a 64bit app to take advantage of my pile of RAM, something that can work natively with R3D's and can take advantage of the Red Rocket Card.

Thoughts?

Gracias,
CB

ppro really supports te rocket

Support for RED Rocket cards: RED Rocket cards are optional cards that can accelerate decoding and debayering of RED (R3D) files. To tell Premiere Pro to make use of an installed RED Rocket card, use the Enable RED Rocket (Global Setting) menu in the RED (R3D) Source Settings dialog box. The options are None, One, and All. The One and All settings refer to the maximum number that will be used by Premiere Pro; if fewer are available, then only the available number will be used. If another application acquires the ROCKET card before Premiere Pro does, Premiere Pro does not display a message at launch that it will fall back to software (non-ROCKET) rendering.

Yeah I thought I saw that Rocket Option when playing with a demo of PP. The Script Sync option for A MC makes it pretty interesting, but I imagine editing would be more painless with Rocket enabled on PP.

Hmm...

Or, you can see what Apple comes up with by NAB. Seems to me like these apps always leapfrog each other. Adobe and Avid finally wake up and get their game on while Apple gets distracted. Question is, will Apple bounce back and get on top again? Hard game to play if you don't want to keep jumping around NLEs. Good luck in your hunt! :cheers2:

I love Premiere Pro CS5 for Red. I think Adobe is taking Red incredibly seriously, and developing new ways to support Red footage in Premiere, After Effects, etc, every day. I'm betting on Adobe.

everything has it's strength and weaknesses. Avid is #1 for media management. For a professional offline online workflow, and a rock solid system that will reconnects to your files in a reliable way is important.

Adobe emphasizes staying as native as possible, which is great but also makes it a system hog. Different workflows, for different environments. Home users I'd go adobe route, post facility I'd go avid route, and keep FCP and premiere on standby on the systems. you'll need FCP installed just to write pro res...

1) premiere for the one stop kind of a guy
2) fcp if you are just comfortable with it, and it probably has the largest userbase and tutorials online.
3) avid MC if you are going to be working along other pro's.

Just sayin...

BTW, smoke on OSX, if you can swing it, is not a bad choice at all...

Yeah, either that or Adobe Premiere Pro.

+1

And they both offer fully functional trial versions so you can see for yourself. IMO, AVID is the more widely accepted solution (at the moment) and handles a few things better. Yet, Premiere Pro with the Mercury Playback Engine is a real pleasure to edit with and is 64bit as well, also has support for the Rocket.

Seriously, Premiere is kinda a no-brainer if you use Photoshop and any other tools from Adobe as it will probably be bundled in the Adobe suite you choose to buy.

Consider the tens of thousands of kids who are editing their 5D2 footage on Premiere CS5 now. These are the editors of the future. Not to mention the large number of Red shooters flocking to Adobe. How long can Avid hold out?

I have nothing against Avid at all. I'm just looking at macro trends and momentum.

There may be tens of thousands of kids editing on Premiere, but most films and TV shows are still finished on Avid or Final Cut

smoke for editing?!?

O_o

Sure! Got several editors here, some with background all the way to avid media suite and/or axials... they LOVE the smoke for editing. Its damn fast, tons of ways to do stuff, and the interface is awesome for quick detailed changes or for massive overall stuff. Can't go wrong with it, except for the price and the learning curve (ahem, cliff....)
