  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NLE Advice?

I've been using Smoke (in its HD/2K/ Advanced form) for years now, and it's hands down the best finishing system on the market. Nothing else even comes close. However, I'd rather stare at the sun through a pair of binoculars than attempt serious long form editing on it. That just ain't what it's for.

Avid MC is still the best editor out there, but PP is fine if you're an indie set-up.

FCP is now very long in the tooth and in desperate need of a huge overhaul. Vegas is brilliant in terms of the core toolset but falls down badly on interoperability. Does it have audio OMF export yet? It beggars belief that they marketed a pro editor without that feature.

There is a simple solution to this!

If You are doing personal films and such, why not subscribe to fxphd? They give you a 3 month lic. Of smoke. So you can follow along AND have the software too. Got a friend who has done that for about nine months. But please, only if you are doing work which is not for profit. If otherwise it would DEFINETLY go against the spirit of what everyone is working towards ( to keep building an industry we can make a decent living from).

How many of us are only doing works "not for profit." I mean, I'm losing money like mad making my films, so perhaps I qualify, but I'm not sure that that's why they had in mind.

You must have a very good source because if I remember correctly apple does not participate in NAB anymore.
Adobe products are here now and support R3D files Now. no need to wait or hope that FCS 4 supports it. that is IF it comes out this year. Some say it will for sure but. it will again, be a mediocre or half update due to some dependability on Lion. and we all know that lion will not be ready this year. well maybe.
So I sugest get what you know it works and most important can test for yourself NOW and do not wait for apple to see IF they deliver. my gut tells me they will not. based on my observations of the actions apple has taken against the pro user lately.

Notice I said BY NAB, not AT NAB. Not saying Apple is going to be at NAB; I am sure they won't. Doesn't mean they aren't aware of it.

I think there's a general misunderstanding of Ubilos' current role. He's Apple's chief video architect. Not the person directly in charge of either iMovie or FCP. His job is to develop technologies, strategies and features that affect the way video is handled by all Apple products. As such, there are things that you see in iMovie or editing on the iPhone that may well work themselves into a future version of FCP.

I welcome anything making our jobs easier. but do not make it (FCP/FCS) consumerish. for that you have FCX or iMovie

I've been playing with the Lightworks beta a bit, just DV footage. Bit of a learning curve involved, but it seems to have pretty powerful media management tools for long form projects worked on by multiple people and workstations simultaneously.
Waiting to see what the options are when their store opens up.

pro apps update! more worthless updates for FCP! wooo. At last my dream as come true for real time compatibility with xdcam 422 720p! more avchd improvements!

only thing half interesting is improved xml.

Can somebody please tell me why native R3D is important to your offline editing? For all of our editors. whom use all of the above... SPEED trumps all and they could care less about quality when offline editing.

This answer really depends on who you are, where you work. If you are a one stop shop handling edit to finish. AVID really is a nice workflow with Nitris DS for a pretty seamless offline to online and FCP with SMOKE is another.

While we find PP and Adobe can be wonderful for short form... so is the VERY UNDERRATED SONY Vegas.

seriusly recommend everyone give VEGAS a run for the $ with R3D's. I'd argue she handles RED native better than anyone so far. SO SIMPLE TO USE

Adobe is my pick right now. Going to see what AVID has to say at NAB this year to compare against Adobe. Be sure about your choice when the $$ fall on the table and then stick with it to get the most out of it.

Hey Chris - I figured I'd check out your site before giving my 2c. Really awesome stuff! Beautiful images. Now I get why you have that Gropius quote on your signature :)

Assuming you primarily want to do those sort of things with your editor, it may be a good idea to get Adobe Master Collection and use Premiere... extremely cost-effective since you're probably already using Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.

Another idea: you could try would be sticking with FCP but adding DaVinci to do the color work. EG run your footage through DaVinci into nice ProRes files and then edit those with FCP. Or do a rough cut in FCP and finish off the color in DaVinci later. Or both. It's very flexible and awesome.

DaVinci has a beautiful tracker which makes it really easy to do things like have a vignette brighten up a chair - and it locks on rock solid even in a dolly move. You can also isolate colors with extreme ease.

Personally I loooove Avid but that's because I do narrative stuff. You could just download the trial and take a look if you wanted - it does have native R3D editing, etc. The learning curve is steep though and you probably won't enjoy it and see the awesomeness until you're 3 months in - which isn't going to happen because the damn trial is only 30 days long. I really think Avid should extend their trial duration :)

The tea leaves point to an update for FCP/FCS this year, but probably something interim before it becomes 64-bit. Maybe next year for a 64-bit FCP.

Logic Pro did go 64 bit with a point release, but I think that the new FCP has been in development for long enough to have a 64 bit release from the get-go. They had already started moving bits of the UI to Cocoa from Carbon in FCP 7 released (little things like the speed change dialog, iirc) so they should have most (well, if it's 64 bit, all) of the UI changed over too.

Thanks Bruce. I've got the bulk of the CS5 suite, so yeah, it's an easy upgrade for PP. FCP was fine for the short pieces I've started doing for my architect clients (all downrez'd to HD). It's been a little frustrating though and I'm working on a short this spring that I want to keep 4k. Really trying to avoid the offline/proxy/reconform approach. The whole NLE workflow is new territory for me though...so learning as I go. The forum has become my bible.

By the way the quote is Mies, though I think Gropius was a more interesting fellow.
