  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NIKON Releases RED Creative LUTs For Nikon NRAW

Congrats Phil for having your LUTs cross over like that.

Thanks to Scott for such a clear and well made demonstration of the LUTs on the different camera's and to Brian for bringing it to my attention.

I see this interim measure to help the looks of the Nikon and RED camera's match as a good sign of things to come.

I think it also indicates again that at some point the range of Nikon and RED camera's will smoothly transition into each other, with the main differences being ergonomic and more related to the physical requirements of their end-use scenarios than the actual image quality (while there will obviously still be some image-quality differences based on different sensors and internal processing capabilities in both Nikon and RED camera's).

I wonder if it will result in the actual same sensor appearing in both a RED and Nikon 'cross-over' range of camera's? Seems like it would make sense in terms of economies of scale, while at the same time continuing with camera lines that have more specialized Nikon stills and RED motion-picture oriented sensors and processing capabilities.

Hang on a minute, wouldn't that be something like a FF Komodo..?

@Phil Holland How about HDR deliverables?
I support SDR and HDR via philmColor and that overall workflow.

And for now, an expanded workflow is using a transform into philmColor and applying the RWG/Log3G10 variants through that workflow.

Likely will be tackling more of this down the line. But this is the first small steps of getting this into the Nikon workflow.

I have a great deal of new "stuff" I've been building over the last two+ years. But I need to wrap filming before I can fully attend to it. That's around mid-November.

It's somewhat surprising the supported Nikon ILCs include the D780. This was introduced with the D6 just before the 2020 pandemic; and it's arguably Nikon's true hybrid DSLR using the Z6 sensor and many integrated mirrorless features. Essentially LiveView AF works properly. But it's been rather left behind in all the attention to the Z system.

Although "only" F-mount, it's fully compatible with almost all variations of F-mount glass, including support for the older screwdriver AF Nikkors, which do not AF on Z cameras. Notable classics include the cream-machine - the 85mm f1.4AFD - and the pair of Defocus Control primes: 105mm f2 DC and 135mm f2 DC.
