Does anybody know if this is true? and if so when/if it's coming out? guesstimate?

or would it be possible to just buy a canon > nikon adapter?

I only ask this because I am stills photographer with all Nikon glass..

The Optitek Nikon mount for epic works on scarlet as well. We just got our canon mount so we have one for sale at a little discount.

Posted here on December 2nd.

Nikon mount is taking a backseat right now... We ( as you can see ) need to do some catching up on everything else, and the Nikon mount has proven to be a magnitude more complicated than any other mount we have engineered.

Nikon, god bless them, tried to keep the F mount alive for 50 years but recent changes with the AF-D and the G has created a bit of a cluster... protocols are all tangled up.. different amount of pins for electronics... Add to that requiring an actual mechanical actuator inside the lens to control the iris on some ( of course the good ones ) lenses, and then that actuator gets in the way of other lenses.

If you are hoping for an even swap/exchange for a canon mount it is unrealistic.. the Nikon mount , as it sits, is going to be more expensive.

It will till come.. but I can officially tell you there is no set date right now as the last round of prototypes and the ones that have been out in testing have proven not to be the final design.

I have coped by biting the bullet and deciding to switch from Nikon to Canon glass... for a one man band run and gun guy like me, autofocus is something I greatly desire.

Otherwise, it would be Optitek for me. Well, that and PL of course.

I plan to just use a little adaptor ring and borrowed Canon lenses until RED release the electronic Nikon mount and I can use my Nikon lenses properly.

I have the adaptor ring (with iris control) specifically for the Nikon 14-24mm 2.8; I keep enthusing about it but I'm for from alone in that opinion; it really is a remarkable piece of glass, and an astonishing one for the price. Everything longer than 24mm I'll go native Canon.

If the Nikon electronic mount is very late and/or very expensive - and Jarred has pretty much stated that it will be both - I'll probably stick with that as my final lens solution - when I'm not using a full PL cine rig.

As much as i'd like to see the RED Nikon dumb/smart mount...i think this is a way off project at the back of the bus....bet this either does not develop OR...it's end of this year. I'd love to be wrong, but i think this was stated someplace by RED that their mount would not be coming soon. So if you're waiting....brace for a loooong wait. You can't go wrong with OptiTek mount.

What I don't get... is why RED can't just release a cheap dumb mount for the time being. Most of us would be happy with that until they can do it right. This is a deal breaker for me.

<--- This guy has lots of, and nothing but Nikon glass. Will not change any time soon either.

hahaha I too am strictly Nikon, and will never convert.

I too have nothing but nikon glass, and don't plan on switching from it either.

I am torn to wait for the D800.. if will ever come out, or just get the Scarlet X..

If you can afford both, get both, but if only one for now, get the Scarlet. Eventually, I know that in addition to my Scarlet, I'll need a "toss around" camera for b-roll and regular photography. It's not like I'm gonna walk around with the Scarlet all the time.

alright so my question is now, which mount do I order if I intend on using an adapter until Red comes out with the Nikon mount?

Why should RED waste time building a dumb mount when a couple already exist from 3rd parties? Their effort is better spent on the smart mount.

Because RED's mounts are the best. Period. I want their locking mechanism, which is also the reason I refuse to use any adapters. Sooo much rotational slop.

Btw, why do you think they would have to spend resources building another mount? Logic tells my little brain that they could just ship the same mounts they have now MINUS the electronics. I'd be happy with that.

I'm also a Nikon shooter but given the time delay and probable increased cost of the Nikon mount I'm feeling like I might just go Canon to be honest. I've shot the canon system in the past and the lenses were very good. I'd hate to have to give up some of my current lenses but you gotta do what you gotta do... Unless RED decides to ship me my Scarlet with a prototype F mount instead of the canon ;)

We at OptiTek had adressed the positive locking issue more than TWO YEARS AGO.
Where have you been?:wink5:
