  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon Adapter Question

Tom from Allstar already stated that it should work for Scarlet, but he hasn't tried it.

It doesn't work so I bought a new Allstar mount and Epic plate (also works with Scarlet) for an Epic so I can use my Nikon and Leica adapter.
It is not a cheap solution but it is real Red approved solution and works great!

Here is the post from Tom at Allstar about The original Allstar Red Mount.

"We've test the Amount for Epic on EPIC, and it works very well. Now we are waiting for RED team's approve.
However, there is one bad news here, A-mount for RED version cannot use on EPIC, because it's diameter is too big for EPIC, it will touch and stock with the side handle and LCD cable.
I`m really sorry, this is an unpredictable problem when I start to make A-mount in 2009.
A-mount for RED version can still be used on other mount base, like F3 or AF100. I really apologize for the problem."

By the way, He already got the approval from Red for His Epic mount.

I would highly suggest the higher end fotodiox adapters(they make 2 versions). There is no play and they allow of infinity focus. They are the best I have used. I would also suggest having one for each lens and leaving them on "permenantly". They will get loose of they are taken on and off a lot.

Hello,
The Red Nikon mount will probably be the best solution because iris control and just using them is not very handy. However if you need it now and money is an issue : Kipon adapters are good enough (you can find them on ebay), very cheap, well built, it focuses infinity, available for g lenses, seems to be exact same built as some more famous brands, and if there is a little play on some of them you can fix them. I never had a problem with them on my 5D and I don't see how they could damage a camera....

Iris g lens control adaptors do the job but are not very nice to use on any adaptors of my knowledge. (very short , no clicking, can't exactly say which stops your at)

ive had the El-cheapo adapters on our Zeiss ZFs etc to use them on the EPIC. Working ok for me, only reason we didnt get a higher end one is because we are going to "Duclos" the set to canon mount soon anyway.

Nikon adapter as a stop gap.

Nikon adapter as a stop gap.

So as I go though these threads I have not seen an answer to the following: If I purchase a Scarlet with either a PL or Canon mount and later when a Nikon adapter is available, will I be able to have it changed? If so I could use the adapters mentioned in this thread as stop gap. Any ideas?

The lens mounts on the Scarlet and Epic are interchangeable. You're not stuck with whatever package you buy. I will be following the route you described- Scarlet with Canon mount, use my Nikon lenses with an adapter, and then purchase the official RED Nikon mount when it's released.

...hopefully sooner than later.

And here is the official latest info from Jarred:
Nikon mount is taking a backseat right now... We ( as you can see ) need to do some catching up on everything else, and the Nikon mount has proven to be a magnitude more complicated than any other mount we have engineered.

Nikon, god bless them, tried to keep the F mount alive for 50 years but recent changes with the AF-D and the G has created a bit of a cluster... protocols are all tangled up.. different amount of pins for electronics... Add to that requiring an actual mechanical actuator inside the lens to control the iris on some ( of course the good ones ) lenses, and then that actuator gets in the way of other lenses.

If you are hoping for an even swap/exchange for a canon mount it is unrealistic.. the Nikon mount , as it sits, is going to be more expensive.

It will till come.. but I can officially tell you there is no set date right now as the last round of prototypes and the ones that have been out in testing have proven not to be the final design.

This is a complete quote.

This is very sad,I am eagerly waiting for Nikon mount

I have a few Allstar mounts (for Red One) for Nikon F lenses and they are just GREAT! And it is from China!
I also have a PL mount, C/Y mount and expecting Leica R mount and an Epic/Scarlet plate.
I believe Allstar is the best option for Nikon and Leica R lenses for Red One and Epic/Scarlet.

Hi Jay,
Thanks for your support, but all of Allstar products are not made in China. We are in Taiwan, even though China is every close to my country and producing there will be much cheaper than Taiwan, but I would rather make my products in Taiwan, I want my products to be made with great precision.

We can`t find Scarlet to test A-mount, but if RED Canon/PL mount can work on both of EPIC and Scarlet, I can find any reason that A-mount can`t.

Is Taiwan a COUNTRY?
Sorry to hear that.

Just to clarify.. any of these adapters that go onto our canon mount or PL mount and are dumb adapters have no fear of voiding any warranties. Had a bunch of emails about that tonight.

Jarred,

Since the Nikon mount is giving you guys fits because of the various design changes by Nikon over the years, what's the possibility of building a couple different mounts to work with the different lenses? It might not be as simple of a solution as the Canon mount, but might solve the issue.

I am mostly interested in the G primes.

i think this is a workable solution. Make the Nikon mount specialized for G lenses and you will at least fit the needs of a large segment of your Nikon-using customer base. The Optitek mount and eventually, the Allstar mount can address the rest of the Nikon lenses.
