  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NIKON 80 - 200 2.8 converted to PL surprises me...

Mark,
I'm a big fan of your work, and all your posts.

Do you have any thoughts on how your nikon80-200 matches with the red pro lenses, like the 17-50 and 50-150?

Titanium PL epic mounts are tough as hell. I hang a 300 2.8 off it no problems at all.
Crikey. You know, the design of the EPIC evokes Terminator, and when you add a <Arnold>TITANIUM</Arnold> mount, it's even more so!

Hi Mark,
Dose your 80-200 PL lens hold focus through zoom? because Nikon 80-200 doesn`t.
FWIW I have a Nikon 50-135/3.5 one-touch, and it doesn't hold focus either.

It's funny how relative things are. A lot of DSLR shooters (not myself) consider 70/80-200 f/2.8's to be HUGE and prefer a 70/80-200 f/4 or even a little variable-aperture zoom. To someone used to cinema glass, it's an ultra-compact.

Look what I picked up at my crack dealer (Duclos) today...

But don't go buggin them, this was a personally owned lens I bought off a customer, Duclos doesn't do this conversion anymore.

I had an 80-200 but do like the 70-200 better. Both really good lenses and with the mod probably great lenses.

When we tested the latests 70-200 VRII and EF 70-200 IS II it was pretty much a dead heat, with the Canon slightly sharper in the corners and the Nikkor slightly sharper in the center.
The Canon seemed to get closer to a real 200mm at full zoom but the Nikkor focused 2 feet closer. CA control was better on the Nikkor. I have no doubt that both Gen 4 70-200s are better than this Gen 2 80-200 but this is still a surprisingly sharp and beautiful zoom, I can't wait to do some tests, especially with the Panavision coating. This particular Nikkor was used for vistavision plates for "the Dark KNigt Rises" and also has an interchangeable mount to Panavision, Nikon, EOS etc.

With this lens I now have a seamless 11-300mm T2.8 lens range in compact (mostly) hand holdable configuration...

Duclos/Tokina 11-16mm T2.8
Angenieux Optimo DP 16-42 T2.8
Angenieux Optimo DP 30-80 T2.8
Duclos/Nikkor 80-200mm T2.8
Red 300mm T2.8
Optex/Nikkor 2X extender

Now I just need to have a case made to fit all the zooms :)

Duclos is still working on the PL conversion for the 70-200VRII and last I checked, he was still planning to make up and sell lots of them as he's done with Tokina 11-16. It would be a fine addition to my zoom set, which is currently the PL modded Tokina and the two DP Rouge Zooms.

The 80-200 has always been a great lens, I've never owned it though even though I have lots of Nikkor glass.

I wonder how the New Zeiss Full frame CZ Series 70-200 and 28-80 will compare. . . Anyway why did Duclos stop making 70-200?

Like Evin, I've had my name on that list for some time. I haven't talked with Matt in a while and I don't even know if the 70-200 conversion is still in the works. When he was still for sure working on it, it seemed like he was encountering more difficulties than anticipated. Too bad he doesn't do the 80-200 conversion anymore. Otherwise I would probably have had him do one already. Seems like when his PL converted 80-200's do come up for sale from others it's always at a bad time for me or someone beats me to it. oh, well...

I suppose I can make some calls to see where I sit in line for the Angie 45-120... That's pretty depressing too.

Contact Matt and tell him to keep an eye out for another one of his 80-200 conversion, you may get lucky like I did. My business partner also ordered the Chinese Canon 70-200 conversion, so we'll have both to compare.

When you said he's done with the Tokina 11-16, does it mean that he is no longer doing the conversions? Say it isn't so!

EDIT: Oops my bad, I mis-read it. Jeff meant "...as he has done with Tokina 11-16." Thanks Chad!

Thieves broke into his shop and stole his only prototype. He's had to start from scratch since then. This was circa 2011.

Evin, I assume its the GL conversion your partner has ordered ? Please let us know a comparison when you can.

We use the stock Nikon 80 200 with A mount and has fixed gears and it works very well. We also have the 16 35 and 28 70 similarly set up. Out of the three the 28 70 and 80 200 perform very well given the mechanics but opticaly they are very good.

Im in two minds weather to hold out for the Duclos 70 200 conversion or to go with the Canon Conversion. The other lens in this focal length is the 70 180 Leica which is covered in other threads and is stellar.
