  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nice All-Around Zoom Lens for the 7D?

if u don't mind that it's aps-c only like the tokina, don't discount the 17-55 EFS 2.8. it's rated one of the best EFS zooms in creation, and sharpness factor is way up there even with L series glass.

I'll agree with the comments about the 24-70L. It's a great lens - heavy, sturdy, well built, and solid performance. I do find it to be too long to be a good all around zoom (as if those really exist). I recently bought the Tokina 11-16 (the same one Duclos has been rehousing for RED PL mount usage) and it is absolutely fantastic. It is a super-wide lens, though, so you wont be getting portraits out of it, unless you're going for that distorted look. There are rumors of a 14-24L, which I'm considering. That way I would have 11mm to 70mm range, and equivalent of roughly 18mm to 110mm when crop factor is accounted for.

Basically, if you get the 24-70, it's great, but will probably leave you wanting something wider.

Why didnt I go for that over the tokina ?

Because I really like the look of a cutaway or interview at at least a 50mm and want to keep my lens changes to a minimum on RnG situations

Also cost is a factor - Im trying to keep my cash away from canon because the next great DSLR may be Full Frame (irreleventing a 16 for general use) and maybe not take canon lenses

Morgan:

I wasn't even aware of the tokina 16-50 but I'm quite interested in what you think of its performance. It would be useful for underwater as 16 is wide enough (not ideal but sufficient) to give decent normal wide angle u/w but also enough zoom range at 50mm to do some macro on the same dive without switching. People use the 18-50 but that extra 2mm (12%) is a pretty big deal.

$549 at b&H by the way.

Also, apparently this lens was made in conjunction with Pentax and some reviews suggest that it can cover a 1.3x sensor which would suggest that it can easily cover RED 5k.

Well its a a short zoom lense, so basically its not very good in the big picture compared to creamy primes, I dont think there are any good wide zoom lenses except maybe the 14-24 nikkor and 16-35 canon

Im not really a lens tester and dont generally care until I see problems - apart from being a little soft wide open I have not seen any problems with this lens

As I said before I am a fan of the good mechanics of the lense which is seems good for 'cine' use

Maybe I can find someone in town with the 16-50 Tokina to get my hands on for a day.
