  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NextVR is releasing their Virtual Reality Camera System at IBC and you can check out their rig in our booth outfitted with 6 Dragons as well as a very cool VR demo of stuff they have shot.

Guessing with only 6 cameras they are having to shoot with 8mm fisheyes to have the overlap to stitch it, which gives you your top anyway. In addition, these are stereo pairs and blending that to a flat image above can be difficult because you have inter-ocular separation in the sides and wouldn't have any looking up. That said, the stereo separation you get from the outward facing cameras get strange if you look up to since all the directions of inter-ocular separation are all converging into stereo nonsense there.

Like Steve, I'm really curious how they stitch interpolated depth frames when you're looking off-axis. You can't just stitch two panoramic images. Must be some sort of crazy real-time stereo generation.

yeah 360 is all fine and nice but you simply can't create a 360 3D sphere from stereopairs that isn't a complete brain blaster. Better use would be to turn those cameras sideways and have a 6k tall by 24k wide panorama

Is there a reason they don't have one in the middle looking straight up? Just curious.

Looks insane!

Depending on what lenses you use that can be covered, but then again you get in a gimbal lock if you look straight up or down. Also most things tend to happen along the horizon...

Not to piss on NetVr's rig, as it does look really cool, but personally I Don't really like stereo/3D.
Also I find 360 video to be rather uninteresting, I never really seen any good use for it. And beleave me I tried and even did quite a bit my self, 20k 98fps 360 stuff for City bank on MX a few years back, I hated it, all sharp all same focus and no direction on where to look. It's like Quicktime VR no matter how you slice it.
The only good thing for it would be oculus rift.... But yes tried those as well and after 20 minutes I wanted to puke and I felt sick for the remains of the day...

So I guess I'm an old man as I like one camera, controlled focus, perfect framing and preferably anamorphic widescreen :)

If they ever make Oblivion 2, this should be the rig to use for all the plate projections

My company is very serious about VR film. Anybody have a contact for NextVR here. PM me pls.

Much thanks. My company is doing a lot with Oculus Rift...I reached out to NextVR and hopefully will be able to chat with them soon.

I'm stoked, mindblowing stuff. Can't wait to see what all the talented people will create with such a rig.

We are getting closer to a holodeck v0.2. ;)
