Hi guys,

just trying to find out more about the Nexto DI's ( http://www.nextodiusa.com/index.htm ) I will like to use them both for the RED footage off the CF Cards as well as for photography CF & SD cards.

I have been using the G-Tech, very successfully but now I also need a solution for those times when I don't have can't have my MBP with me.

So if any one has been using them please share your opinions.

Thanks

hi Ketch

I have used the DI to transfer CF card from both red and 5dII. It works very well. I should mention that the new NVS2500 should be out soon. If my understanding is correct, it will have the abillity to play back R3D files on a small LCD screen to varify proper transfer. The DI Works now but the future is even brighter. Hope this helps.

Thanks Frank, much appreciate your info, will look up the NVs2500 as well.

Hi Frank,
where did you hear about the NVS2500 being able to play R3D files? This would be great, but I haven't heard this before...

thanks

Hi Ketch, I've used the NEXTO for Red footage (even an older one with PATA drive interface) with no problems. The Nexto is very fast and supposedly verifies the data. I'm not expert enough to know how sophisticated the verification process is. But I've never had a glitch.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if the NVs2500 played back R3D files -- but you can go with the 2700, much less expensive and it works fine. You can even find them bare and put in your own drives. Not a big deal. That way you can get 500 gigs for about $230.

Hi Jean

I spoke with there distributor here in the US. He said they are working on making the NVS2500 the complete package for Red users. Their intension is to make R3Ds playable. I must admit, it sounds like a large hurtle. I will leave this to the more technical minds and hope for the best. These units are still in beta. They will include a onboard color monitor.

BTW Ketch. The Nexto Extreme also does a solid job as a backup device.

Thanks again guys for the useful info, will give a shot and hope it will meet my needs.

I have seen the prototype. IIRC, the Nexto doesn't play back the actual R3D file as much as the QuickTime proxy carrier, which is same difference as far as checking for file corruption. As long as you can see that it made it to the drive and you're safe to erase the CF card. Also nice is that you can daisy chain the old unit to the new one so that you can mirror and make an instant backup as you go. And I know this is REDuser but some of you also use other cameras, so it is nice that it can accept a variety of cards and can playback a variety of formats. P2 compatibility is sweet.

Abel will be selling this product as soon as it becomes available.

Thanks for the heads up Mitch, much appreciated.

AFAIK, they're accessing the R3Ds via the SDK.

Thanks for the correction. I thought it would be less processr-intensive to use the QuickTimes, but if they go straight to the files then good for Nexto.

I highly recommend the Nexto Extreme. I bought two of them and put 128GB SSD's in them that they have worked flawlessly. (And I've been shooting out of helicopters with them.) It is invaluable to have them copy and verify the footage for you automatically. It has meant that I can load a card and continue shooting knowing that it is all being taken care of for me. They have yet to fail me. :)

My one gripe is that during the copy & verify process the SSD's are not being used at their full speeds. My guess is that they are slowed down by the controller that automates the process- or maybe it is just the speed of the Red CF cards that keeps it slow? Either way, there doesn't seem to be a speed gain at that stage of things.

However- when I go to copy the footage off the Nexto, I am only limited by the speed of the drive I am copying too. I've been able to transfer a full drive using eSATA in well under 30 minutes (Sometimes around 20 minutes).

One other benifit of going the SSD route, is that I can fill the entire 128GB drive using only the internal battery on full charge. According to the spec's with a spinning drive you can only copy 60 - 80GB of content with the internal battery.

Thanks Mitch, great review.

This will definitely be on my bag soon, it has just happened too many times that we are on remote locations with no power sources on site and can't download any media, especially now with my new MBP with none replaceable battery.

Look forward to its release.

ciao

I believe it is as well.

As I have said around this board before. The units are fantastic for RED. have 2 myself.
