  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nexto DI Anyone?

Hi Ketch,
I use the Nexto 2700 extreme since one year without any problems. We just finished a 4 week feature film with Red CF cards and back up on set only with Nexto (with 320GB harddisk)without any loss . The only thing I would consider is to put a SSD (to be more quite about shaking during copying). I will update it soon with one.
Cheers,
Marc

Just a heads up- you may want to consider getting the external battery even with the SSD. I was just out on a shoot where I had to shoot and back up the card before it was full (it was about half full). And the numerous backups and data verifications ate up the battery. (I had it on full verification.) When I fill up an 8GB card and dump the full card to the drive with full verification I am able to fill up the drive before the battery runs out. So it seems that the many dumps and verifies are what eat up the battery.

Fortunately, I have multiple drives, so it was not an issue. But if it was my only one I would have been screwed... (I was in a location with out power, otherwise I could have just plugged it into a wall.)

Other then that, I can't recommend this unit enough. :)

External battery is not an option, it is a MUST HAVE.

Wish they would install this capability in EPIC, i.e. highspeed CF for highest data rate recording and then offload to an SSD module or slower CF/SD when not recording.

On the other hand seems like maybe it would make more sense to have 16 or 32gigs internal very high speed optimized memory that could dump to external.

Thanks for posting.

The only card he did not mention a time on was the Red CF card- how long does it take to download and verify a full 16GB card on this unit?

I highly recommend the Nexto Extreme. I bought two of them and put 128GB SSD's in them that they have worked flawlessly. (And I've been shooting out of helicopters with them.) It is invaluable to have them copy and verify the footage for you automatically. It has meant that I can load a card and continue shooting knowing that it is all being taken care of for me. They have yet to fail me. :)

My one gripe is that during the copy & verify process the SSD's are not being used at their full speeds. My guess is that they are slowed down by the controller that automates the process- or maybe it is just the speed of the Red CF cards that keeps it slow? Either way, there doesn't seem to be a speed gain at that stage of things.

However- when I go to copy the footage off the Nexto, I am only limited by the speed of the drive I am copying too. I've been able to transfer a full drive using eSATA in well under 30 minutes (Sometimes around 20 minutes).

One other benifit of going the SSD route, is that I can fill the entire 128GB drive using only the internal battery on full charge. According to the spec's with a spinning drive you can only copy 60 - 80GB of content with the internal battery.

Ryan, is this what you bought? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/592213-REG/Nexto_DI_NESE_ND270320G_Nexto_eXtreme_320GB_.html

Did you just crack it open and pitch the default 320gb spinning and replace it? Or does Nexto sell one that doesnt come with a hdd?

Oh, and I got two of them so that I could have two copies of the footage on set. (They both get copied and archived later, but I'd rather not wait to have two copies.)

I bought mine without a drive, and then installed the drive I wanted- very easy to do. When I bought the drive it was on sale for $299, but now it looks like it is almost $350. Here are the links:

Enclosure: (It was just over $100- but I can't find it on their site any more)

Apparently timing is everything ...

Bummer! I wonder where you could get an empty Nexto? I'm surprised they arent releasing an SSD solution themselves, seems a no-brainer.
