  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

News...

well they are most probable no. 1. their censors are just, well, a little small :-)

It is quiet now. It will be quiet for a bit.

We are shipping EPIC-Xs now on a fairly good clip and that will accelerate as we move along.

REDCINE-X Professional has released and there will be regular updates. Lots of cool stuff coming. Free as usual.

We are letting everyone else get their announcements out. Letting the dust settle.

Then expect an explosion. A really big one.

I have to chuckle with some of the releases coming out now. You thought we were a "hype machine"?

If you bought a RED ONE in 2006 (for $17,500), you got many free firmware upgrades and then a paid sensor upgrade (MX for under $6K). So you were in a 4K camera (same one that shot The Social Network) for $23,500. If you had a Sony 950 in 2006 and tried to stay current, you would have bought an F23, an F35 and soon an F65. Total well over $500K with recorders. Or you could have bought an Arri D20, then a D21 and then an Alexa for the same amount. And you wouldn't have a "future proof" camera until you took delivery of the F65.... a few months from now. Did I mention upgrade program to EPIC?

Sony's newest claim is that they "Aim to achieve the absolute #1 position with CMOS sensors". Good luck with that. I guess we should be flattered because it implies that they are not there now... and maybe we are just sitting on our hands. Sounds like a challenge. We accept.

While I have committed to not announce anything until it is ready, please expect us to have your back and be ahead of the pack.

Sounds like RED is hunkering down and really getting to work, both on EPIC production, and whatever items are coming next. Good.

Sounds like Jim is extremely excited about both EPIC and the next agenda items. Good.

Epic-X. Great.

Epic-X upgrade from RED-ONE program. Unbelievable.

Here's hoping we'll hear more about $20,000 and under cameras before NAB 2012. And while I'm hoping, those cameras might as well show up in the RED store, too!

I really don't think they are talking solely about cinema sensors... I think they will aggressively attack the mobile/cell industry. Along with making further strides in the compact/DSLR market (and yes, the digital cinema market, which, as I'm sure you know, is tiny in terms of % of CMOS sensors sold).

You guys are doing everything right, don't spend too much energy looking over your shoulder at the likes of Sony.

I just wish Epic-S was still around so I could be part of this sooner. It'll be a while before I can get an Epic-X...

I wouldn't count the "half Epic" out of the race yet. No one said it was scrapped. Some changes and a rename? Perhaps...

You should expect a lot from us. You should expect us to lead the industry just as we have done since the 1st day we entered the market. Nothing less.

Jim... It feels like in the last few weeks things have turned a corner, like somehow you've caught a fresh vision of what Red is about. There's a fresh fight in your words. I'm liking it!

Epic-S . . . .sumthin.

Epic-S . . . .sumthin.

That's the one I'm waiting for. If I were making it, I'd rename it "Indie". You guys shoot EPIC films on your Epics, I'll shoot indie films on it. It seperates it from both, and protects the rental end for the Epic.

As far as a shipping roadmap, the guys at RED know that around a thousand people are lurking the boards all day with credit cards in hand waiting for Scarlet and S-? camera. They probably don't dare announce a thing until they have at least a couple hundred ready to ship, or they'd be looking at another backorder situation. Nobody wants that.

I'd update the store first and see how long the news took to make it here, but I'm kind of cruel.

RED's non-corporate philosophy is what I respect so much. Rather than maximizing as much profit as possible from customers, they're maximizing camera capabilities and keeping them at an affordable price. I've been saying for a while that this is the philosophy businesses will have to maintain in this day and age. This is the way of balance, in my opinion.

@Jannard As you rightly pointed out: aiming is not hitting! And there are many ways Sony can achieve their goal. For example by being the biggest producer of CMOS in the USA, something which RED could never become... so everything is still open for everyone :D What a great time!

But the new 4k JVC cam looks interesting if the price is right.

with 4 sd cards recording it cross all of them at the same time I would say the price point doesn't matter (though it's not bad fs100ish). Seems to me like this is just another hd100u with the sse, just this time it's a horrible method for recording to media or at least it seems that way. though still a good step no matter what in the right direction so I shouldn't complain... though I did buy a hd100u so I can complain about that.

The RED Epic Nano. But Apple would sue. Because Apple owns the word Nano:-)

Oh Ye of little faith. Do you really think Red is not going to compete with an S35 model in the F3 market range?

Based on what I know so far about Jim, Jarred, Deanan and Graeme - here's my prediction of this "explosion":
RED Dragon 6K sensor with 14 stops DR.
RED Scarlet 4K with 8x fixed zoom lens, f/2.8 at the widest - under $6000.

I've been thinking this as well....hope you're right! :)

Great point! The Epic-S is going to crush the F3! Red is playing their cards wisely by keeping hush hush about this. Then they will strike and obliterate the competition

Imagine a s35 brain+side handle+zoom lens package in a cool flight case, for under $25k.
Some of us paid more than that for USED 16mm gear (XTR+) 10-12 years ago, and we still have it because we can't sell it.

I hate to play devils advocate but based on Scarlet neverending non-release, I highly doubt the F3 will even be the F3 when EpicS is "released". I also doubt it will be the only camera fighting for that markets share when EpicS is "released". I suspect EpicS will be in the store sometime in late 2012 at the earliest but most likely 2013-14.

Like I said in my very first REDUSER post ever (#68, this thread, a page back) they will probably not announce Scarlet as ready or even close until they have a skidload finished, packaged, and ready to ship. As soon as they say "Go", they will get about 200 orders in 2 minutes. I'm hoping the "non-release" is preperation for the coming storm. They will need all hands on deck in shipping.

I'll join these speculations.

FF35 8K Sensor aka DRAGON
Super35 1.89 mode should be 6K (6144x3240) which resolves a bit less then true 5K resolution.

Just imagine shooting in 6K (30MP) true anamorphic 2:1 mode with the brand new RPAs!

This is only my guess.
