  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

News...

It is quiet now. It will be quiet for a bit.

:-(

We are shipping EPIC-Xs now on a fairly good clip and that will accelerate as we move along.

This is great to hear Jim. When the dust settles, hopefully we can get an update on the stages, where we are and what we can expect for stage 3 / 3.5 / 4

REDCINE-X Professional has released and there will be regular updates. Lots of cool stuff coming. Free as usual.

Finally sitting down to look through it - but looking cool so far!

We are letting everyone else get their announcements out. Letting the dust settle.

Then expect an explosion. A really big one.

Cool - bring it on.

I have to chuckle with some of the releases coming out now. You thought we were a "hype machine"?

If you bought a RED ONE in 2006 (for $17,500), you got many free firmware upgrades and then a paid sensor upgrade (MX for under $6K). So you were in a 4K camera (same one that shot The Social Network) for $23,500. If you had a Sony 950 in 2006 and tried to stay current, you would have bought an F23, an F35 and soon an F65. Total well over $500K with recorders. Or you could have bought an Arri D20, then a D21 and then an Alexa for the same amount. And you wouldn't have a "future proof" camera until you took delivery of the F65.... a few months from now. Did I mention upgrade program to EPIC?

Sony's newest claim is that they "Aim to achieve the absolute #1 position with CMOS sensors". Good luck with that. I guess we should be flattered because it implies that they are not there now... and maybe we are just sitting on our hands. Sounds like a challenge. We accept.

I am more than happy with what RED is doing, and what you are about to do. I have committed my own / the company money for EPIC stage 4 when that comes and everything that surrounds that. For some of us, that is no pocket change - but I trust the track record of Jim and the RED team to deliver us the tools to help us create our visions.

While I have committed to not announce anything until it is ready, please expect us to have your back and be ahead of the pack.

In Jim we trust. You are our wing man - we trust you to keep us ahead of the curve. After all, you've done it right for the last 5 years!

Thanks for the update Jim.

Prize Special Edition Scarlet.

Prize Special Edition Scarlet.

Jim,

I have a really interesting idea for a special edition of the fixed scarlet's body that could be given away as a prize to one of the patient fans after release.

A body made of transparent dark pure red plastic backed by a red filter filter to only allow the red spectrum to be reflected out (all fhd competition will see is Red ;) ) so that bright light penetrates just enough to just hi-light the internal parts inside the camers. Ontop of this would be a conservative red lighting system to be shown when camera is not shorting but on, and shut off when shooting unless chooses in menu otherwise. The really novel thing is to include plasma lightening components inside the case ( where you might like to expand light filter for more colors, or leave for just Pure Red lightening). I would love to fill the case up wit gas and some emitters and let it rip, but I don't think the electronics would last too long without special protection :) . But the body could be double skinned and the cavity filled with gas and strategically placed emitters, giving a similar effect.

If coarse you could just put a Red OLED layer inside (transparent possible) the body, or Ontop of the metal body and skin that in dark red plastic.

Another option is to contrast, making the body and lighting effects dark blue, or light blue, with big Red label or button.

What do you think?

Thanks

Wayne.

Based on what I know so far about Jim, Jarred, Deanan and Graeme - here's my prediction of this "explosion":
RED Dragon 6K sensor with 14 stops DR.
RED Scarlet 4K with 8x fixed zoom lens, f/2.8 at the widest - under $6000.

More detailed prediction:
The 6K Dragon sensor will be able to produce clean images up to ISO 1600. ISO 3200 will also be quiet good.
The physical size of the sensor will probably remain the same, as it's supposed to be in-place upgrade to the current MX sensor.

However, the 6K dragon will require very high-quality glass to bring out its full potential. Currently only Leica produces this sort of high-quality glass - for a very high price.
So RED is probably planning to come out with an announcement of new RPPs and RPZs, on the same day the Dragon is officially announced.
Expect the new RPPs to rival the Leicas in terms of resolution and general IQ, but RED being RED - the RPPs will be offered for roughly half the price.

As Mr. Jannard is sort of an expert in optics (Oakly heritage), I wouldn't be surprised RED can pull this off.

I think you have to remember that we are only a 5 year old company... just getting started. Our library of information and capability is growing. Our commitment to the industry is clear. You should expect a lot from us. You should expect us to lead the industry just as we have done since the 1st day we entered the market. Nothing less.

I think RED, while only 5 years young, is still dramatic leaps above anything for production digital cinema gear now and at the least will be on a level playing field soon, which with Jim's drive and passion, will only push him and RED to advance further. It is awesome to see that they don't waste their time on low end consumer products like low quality dslrs, copiers, printers, etc. I understand why the big companies do this, but Sony, Canon, JVC, etc all have their hands tied with with so many products, some technology is passed from larger cameras to smaller and vise versa instead of creating the best experience for cinematographers.

Red is amazing at any price point for sure!! I'm glad RED is like Arri in the sense they are focusing on true cinema tools only.

So RED is probably planning to come out with an announcement of new RPPs and RPZs

As we've heard verey few things about RPA, I would think they rather create some custom 6k red centric anamorphic glass. Something to use the full sensor area. Something even Vantage and Panavision haven't. ?

If you read the whole presentation, Sony isn't really addressing only the professional cinema market (link)

Sony has a dominant position in the CCD imaging sensor market. Most of the compact camera sensors and a big portion of DSLR/CSC Sensors (Nikon, Pentax, Sony α) are fabricated by Sony.
They want to maintain their position and expand in the mobile phone camera market as they shift to BSI-CMOS sensors (Sony Exmor R).
Even if RED would dominate the professional video camera market, I doubt that they could beat Sony in imaging sensor fabrication soon.

But you never know...

Question: Jim at NAB this year, you had some OLPF filters on display with the idea of being able to swap them out if needed. Did that idea die out, or is it something you are still thinking about.

Jay

Just what I was thinking Matthias, RED and its few thousand cameras are quite negligible compared to the billions of devices carrying CMOS sensors. Pretty sure Sony was talking about market share and revenue share too.

Calling shallow depth of field "super reality" is fairly amusing.

What a ride. I'd say we clearly hitched our wagons to the right star.

Well Jim, the proof is in the using.

We are more than half way through our feature film Path Of Souls and people are quite simply amazed by the images we're lensing. Of course we have incredible natural landscapes for our actors. I like to shoot everyone backlit against the sun. And we have HDRx. I've said this is the single biggest feature that pays for the camera all by itself...now I've yet to see 5K images projected at 6:1 but I have a feeling once I do I will perhaps change my opinion.

That being said, I know our little film could not afford to shoot any other way...though I'd probably be compromising creatively if I hadn't decided on using our two Epic cameras with Red Pro lenses. All thanks to you and the ret of the team. We are off for two days before we start up again, and I hope to be able to post a few stills with simple one light pass out of RCX Pro.

Truly amazing.. Takes balls and a shitload of money ;-)

People say how bad 4k would be on 2/3rds because of small pixels, but I have located sensors doing over 19 stops, and who knows how hood low light. The existing hdr solution I'd a work around we were suggesting, that requires double frame rate, but sensor technology has existed to integrate samples into one output sample, in pixel. So, this will be good in the future, also s16mm, 4/3rds or 35 mm. Literally, technology exists to make pixel size less of an issue. I suspect we will see 2/3rds- s16mm at 8k stills consumer in the near future.

Ambarella is supporting 32 mp, and they are low end camers chipsets. So. maybe they know something about what is coming to that segment.
It's not so much a problem with the sensor as with lenses. For a 2/3-inch lens to resolve anything close to 4K it would probably cost many times what the Scarlet fixed costs.

cant wait for that explosion... And im sure I like countless others hope that explosion is the thousands or scarlets flooding the market

Thanks for the good news... but like it wrote in another thread...

The roadmap is the roadmap. If it changes, it changes.
Just let them do what they are doing for the moment. RED is doing fine.
We wait...
Just keep an eye on Recon and when they post something, we read it and then we know. Before that we just wait... and hope for the best. Because we only want the best, and RED is building it for us. Just wait...

It is quiet now. It will be quiet for a bit.
