I hope I am posting this in the right area, these questions are probably a little simple as I am completely green with Red cameras...

I am researching the scarlet. Its such good value (less than an upgrade of my phase one digital back for stills), that its hard to ignore.

I'm planing on shooting some personal advertising type work (spec work to learn) - along the line of what I already do with my stills photography. Besides shooting stills alongside many TVCs, I haven't worked with any red footage myself- I'm completely green although I have a couple of Ads with a 5d- but its not a very professional system imo .

Can someone help me with these workflow questions? I know if I get a full paid advertising shoot in the future with the gear I will just hire people to do all the tech for me, but in the mean time I need to do stuff for myself.

- Would a macbookpro 2.2 quad with and ssd and and extra internal 750 gb drive and 16gb of ram be fast enough to download, store and view the red footage as I shoot on location - without a red rocket card? It scores as fast as an low entry macro on the processor scores..

- How do you go about viewing the footage quickly on the day of the shoot? for ex- we shoot a take- then want to view it instantly to make sure we have it? would this be done through the camera through a monitor, or is it best to download first? (although this takes some time).

- Would it be possible to do quick edits on the fly with my macbook pro. I see this being done on may TVCs- they have a dedicated editor/data wrangler, and it helps with the trickier edits when you can see just what you just shot. Or do you need a lot more horsepower with computers?

- Is the bomb evf shipping yet to anyone? I figure that would be more usable to me than a 5 inch red touchscreen (just control the camera with a red remote).

- Would I be able to use an ef f1.0 50mm with the red ef mount?

Thanks heaps for any help! cheers Paul

Your Macbook Pro would be enough to transfer the footage for sure, though I would store it on separate drives as a backup. And of course this is depending on how much you shoot.

As far as reviewing your footage goes, you can definitely do one take, then offload and check to see if its there, though I don't feel that's necessary as you can just replay the clip using a monitor.

You can do quick on the spot edits, I would definitely recommend having a data wrangler/media manager on shoots.

The Bomb EVF is shipping. Its cool but on most sets that I've been on, the lcd gets much more use. Though I mostly shoot in studios and dont have to worry about things like glare. Grips fix that.

If your lens is a full frame EF mount lens, then sure.

1. macbook pro 2.2 quad should be fine. I edit 4k R3d files (that's the format RED shoots) just fine on my 2006 mac pro. You'll want Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5

2. not sure here, I'd search for "dailies" in the forum search

3. yep

4. not sure, again try the search

5. do you mean the Canon EF 50mm 1.2 L lens? Then yes. And, as I understand it, the RED Canon mount takes any EF or EF-s lens.

I think he means the old 50mm f/1.0L which has been discontinued for some time. I believe it will work, but I don't think anybody has tested one yet.

thanks guys for the quick replies. I just talked to my rental house that has an epic- and he says that the easiest quick way of seeing takes to to control this straight out of the camera to a monitor. but he says this feature isn't working yet with the epic (will be with a firmware update), but apparently the scarlet plays back sweet straight from the camera. this is important as I'm new, so i need to review what i shoot often! I'm very use to shooting some shots with stills, taking a break and seeing what i just caught.

yes, I'm talking about the old f1.0 ef canon lens. it has the older system like the 85mm f1.2 ef that only focuses when theres power going into the lens. when the lens is off the camera, then the focus ring turns freely without moving the focus elements inside. these are the only two lenses in the canon range i know that does this. I'm sure it would be fine, as a lot of people are using the 85mm f1.2.

cheers paul
