  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Zeiss Otus??

We asked at the Zeiss booth at Cinec in Munich. They told us, there will be some new Otus lenses in Q1 2019, but didn't tell us what focal lenghts they will bring.

Lenses or Lens? Because with how long they're taking let's hope it's more than one.

It's a good thing we can get good cine prime(Sigma) alternatives for less money these days.
Otus are nice to have but not a necessity to get a prime picture.
Even for a VV-Helium(40.96x21.60 mm ->11222x5918~67 Mpix) the Sigma's have enough resolving power.

True, they have no real new Otus lenses. This will bring price of 85mm down. Perhaps Otus line will be finito soon.

Old news. Also for them to release a 100mm non-macro doesn't make much sense.

Why doesn't it?

Everybody else is making something in that range at the moment. Take a look at all those upcoming fast 105mm designs.

Also, conversely, you may not end up with a f/1.4 "macro lens". Name me any f/1.4 macro lens in that focal range. Most 100mm macros are slower glass, generally speaking.

That said, it's a waiting game. Zeiss has been mega focused on Supremes and various other things. The Otus isn't a top seller, but a top performer which is attractive to discerning professionals. And many of them have been pushing them to release the new stuff, including myself. But we don't get to control manufacturing timelines and release dates unfortunately.

As far as I know and the last time I talked to the German crew behind the Otus and future Otus offerings everything will remain f/1.4.

Also, I wouldn't call that old news as that's the first (in my recollection) actual image of the lens that's hit public eyes. Or that's what it at least seems.

Shockingly the 28mm was known about within circles for 2 years and that didn't get the leak treatment. I'm particularly curious where those images actually came from in this case. Nokishita has been dropping a fair bit of stuff ahead of the gun as of late.

Would love to see an innovative 16 1.4 or even a 14 1.4. weight is not an issue for the set and price range i think. it would be something entirely new and produce a different, unique image.

I'm not even gonna pretend like a 100mm f/1.4 is something special. If it were a 135mm that'd be dope. But one lens (that was talked about for over a year) isn't appealing, at least for me.

If there were a 100mm and 35mm coming out together that would also be dope, and more worth the drop of some cash. At this point filling out the Otus line with some Milvuses makes more sense until they get it together with the package, not one lens at a time, and not 100mm non macro, regarless whether they exist or not.

Since the 100 "leak" is out so early (unusual for Otus-lenses) and the 85 is now 3 years old, i would not be surprised if that isn't the only one. Well, there is a lot of hope in that sentence to be honest.

If the 100 is 2019's only Otus, then dear Zeiss better not take another 3 years before bringing out the next one.

But it looks cool and can't wait to see samples. ;-)

Hi,
is there any news on Zeiss Otus range? Or is that it....3 primes.
They may release a 100mm in 2019. Do you have any info on comparisons between the otus vs tokina vista primes. Looking for something that covers 6k/8k

I use the 135mm Milvus all the time together with the Otus, amazing lens
very sharp, great on skin, great smooth transition from focus to out of focus,
and great close focus for a 135mm, works well as a Macro with extension rings
I only get my Canon 100mm Macro out for extreme magnification

And yes Zeiss told me at Paris Photo that he next Otus is 100 Macro, but
I have a suspicion it will not be a true 1:1 Macro

with the 135mm Milvus matching so well I was quite disappointed,
was hoping for a 21 or 35

anyone using the 35mm 1.4 Milvus with the Otus, I find the gap between 28 and 55
the most restricting part of the lineup

Any other new Milvus design? Now we have 25, 35, 50, 85 f/1.4. Is a new 18/21 1.4 coming? I need something fast and wide for my raven to complete my milvus set. :)

So what is going on with Otus?
Too expansive to make? Not selling well? Competition is making Zeiss life difficult?
Is that all will get from Zeiss? 3 lenses?. After so much hurrah there is nothing new...

So what is going on with Otus?

150% certain that the focus on Supremes took over much of the effort on Otus, which is ongoing until 2020. Zeiss is on record for 2 new Otus designs, two I'm aware of, that we all would want.

This is one of those we'll have to wait and see. It's a tricky world as mirrorless bodies from Nikon, Canon, and Sony are shortly within 2 years be most of the professional focus too. Don't worry much about that at the moment, especially since it's painfully easy to adapt lenses to those mounts.

It does put some interesting logic into the mix however as you can likely design all of the modern glass a smidge "better" for those shorter flange distances, mainly benefitting in the speed department for most designs.

There are many around the world who use them however for both still and motion, I hope Zeiss keeps to the line. These really revealed what Zeiss excels in.

I hope one of those lenses is either 14mm or 18mm. My main reason for purchasing an Otus set was that they are mini-MPs that cover VV, and if that wasn’t enough, the icing on the cake was that the ZF.2 versión have manual aperture that can be converted to EF mount. So basically they can be used with practically any camera in the wild. So as far as Camera upgrades go I would always be covered and have a set of lenses for life.
