Hi,
is there any news on Zeiss Otus range? Or is that it....3 primes.

There are 100% more coming. That's all I can say. Zeiss has been busy with..... Something else. Like you'll know real soon.

So do I understand it correctly that the Otus cannot be declicked aperture?

Does that make the ZF2 a bit better for cine-modding and use on the RED? Cheaper too..

Trying to decide between vintage Contax and the Otus/Milvus.

That is good news and they must be eager to kick some butt against the ARRI Signature Primes.
Well when a company can engineer optics for the EUV machines from ASML they are sure able to produce the next best optics for Photo/Video/Cinema.

If you have a Nikon Mount Otus (which can be adapted to EF Mount), you can have a declicked aperture on the lens.

I personally use the Canon Mount lenses though because I prefer focus pull direction to be "the right way".

Supreme!

Zeiss is going to show their new set of high speed FF primes around Cine Gear, for some reason they did not show at NAB. They are very impressive. Sell your Master Primes.

My, my. The MPs are an engineering achievement worthy of genuflection (and repeated use ;-) but size, cost and maintenance are not trivial. With the growing number of larger sensor motion cameras hitting the market this does seem like an opportune time for Zeiss to release a more evolved reference lens with a 50mm+ image circle. Moreover, the marketplace has changed along with the technology which has altered the business equation. Interesting times...

I am totally holding out for these to be re-housed for cine with manual everything, focus the right way.
Hopefully that is the hold up, I hear whispers of others rehousing them.

It's not hard to make a case for factory cinevised Otus primes. People are already calling them "poor man's MPs". That said, Zeiss already has the CP3 line for "budget cine" buyers.

FWIW, the market for "cine" primes is a different animal than a decade ago when rental houses were the primary buyers and top DPs the one's who needed to be enamored of the look. Now that large single sensor digital cinema cameras number in the tens of thousands...

A set of FF+ fast primes with Zeiss DNA makes sense. Here's to hoping they are somewhere between UPs and MPs in terms of size, cost and widest aperture. Perhaps a 6 lens set for $80K with more focal lengths in the pipeline...

Makes total sense, budget lenses like cp3 & Sigmas wont be used on big budget TVC or drama work so there is a definite hole in the Zeiss line up when it comes to covering FF sensors. A masterprime replacement FF Zeiss line is the next void to be filled by Zeiss.

Hey Roger,

Have you ever tested these lenses? I am very interested in them but have a feeling there must be a catch somewhere for them to be that cheap.

Thanks,
Simon

Have tested the nikon mount(non cinevised) and there is a catch. They are just to good even when the price is 5 times higher.

I haven't no, but it's probably the direction I'd go if I want to purchase Otus Lenses. LookCircle has been around a while, so I assume they're pretty trustworthy.

Just a moderate update.

As you can tell the Supreme Primes took over the scheduling and focus a bit for Zeiss leading up to the launch. However, there is a dirty, grungy, filthy rumor of some new Otus glass being announced before the year is out.

Just don't ask me. I'm Mr. Clean :)

The obvious additions would be a WA in the 12-20mm range, and, something that would play tele/compression on a bigger target (FF/VV) like a 135mm.

For FF/VV on the wide side it would compete with:
Sigma 14mm (ART or CINE)
Tokina Vista 18mm
Canon 11-24 4L rectilinear
Zeiss CZ 15-30
???

Adding an Otus 135-ish prime at T2 or better, that matched the others well, would make the set much more appealing for many projects.

Other wide options for VV:

- Zeiss CP.3 15mm and 18mm T2.9
- Zeiss Supreme 15mm T1.8 and 18mm T1.5 when they are released
- Laowa/Venus Optics 12mm f/2.8
- Tokina hinted at a wider than 18mm prime at some point, but it's a ways away.
- Canon CN-E 14mm T3.1

Canon had a 10mm f/2.8 prime in the works a long while ago, but I'm pretty sure they are focused on something a bit different this past 2 years.

I don't know if the big Z changed their guard on Otus, but I'm nearly 100% certain that every Otus will be f/1.4 and there is a Supreme 135mm T1.5 planned, so perhaps a marriage of advancements there.
