  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Zeiss 55mm f1.4

2:45 into this video, Zeiss' Richard says 85mm 1.4 OTUS shipping late August
with wide angle(s) due in 2015
Hmmm, so it's just one for this this year, not the previously mentioned two.

And there are currently no plans for cine-versions of Otus.

what Phil says:

....No new Otus primes this year and much of what I learned last year remains true. There are two lengths that I know if in development for this series and I know more lengths are being "explored".
Expect 2.5-3-ish years before we see these in any form of proper cinema housing. Zeiss won't do that until likely 3 lengths are available. Old news, but the good news is people like them....

85mm 1.4 proto

85mm 1.4 proto

Ciao guys just to let you know i've seen at a fashion show in paris a guy with an 85 mm he said it was a prototype and he was testing it for zeiss....never seen him as a fashion photographer in my life so... Zeiss is giving away gold to wrong people :) sorry photographer! :)
it was on canon 5d mk 3
I just touched it for 30 sec feel was great, it's very big but not heavy as u expect, though heavier than any zf2 i own,the rubberish ring is well built not like nikons rubber rings getting loose after 1 year and it makes easy to put a gear on it without slipping around as it happens for zf all metal barrel
front glass is bigger than any still lens i have ever worked with
the only thing i don t like is the price :)
cheers

Richard from Zeiss said the 85mm f/1.4 will be likely available towards the end of the year with one or two wides coming. That's all I've learned recently.

Shame about short focus throw...but could be candidate for rehouse once Sigma have full ART set available.
...or use them with one of the upcoming REDLINK-based EFF-solutions. Until they arrive, yeah, manual focusing on still lenses isn't really a joy. The 18-35 and 35 ART lenses are no exception here, the 50 will not be different. I totally underestimated that part for a long time. Re-Housed SiGMAs are an interesting option, as long as they can be made for a price-point well below the cost of a single Otus lens. The Otus doesn't need a re-housing. Add gears, thats all.

Rumors say Otus 85/1.4 will get announced at photokina this year, other rumors add a 35/1.4 to that date too, but that would be a surprise. Would make a good starter set (like Xenon 35/50/75), but i was hoping for something wider...

I'll play around with the SiGMA 50 soon, i hope. The reviews and samples are great, SiGMA did a really good job, especially for that price.

Something wider will be Otus 21mm f1.4 to compete with Leica M ;-)

Yes yes yes...

Actually thats where it gets really interesting, There is a 55/1.4, a 85/1.4 and 35/1.4 are pretty safe, but those focal lengths are a bit "standard", i don't want to say boring. ;) I'm more curous about what comes after that set of 3 is done.

Nice, not a bad choice for their next FF-ART-prime.

So all they need is 85mm f1.4.
I don't agree, the real fun begins after they've done the standard-primes. I was also hoping that rumored 135/1.8OS would come this year.

Hmmm, i think its actually the opposite of what i wished for, i wanted a wider Otus and the 135 or 85 from SiGMA, but it looks like we get the 85 Otus and the 24 SiGMA.

Maik, the current Sigma 85mm is very good, albeit not ART.
Hmm, you are right, this lens got totally underestimated by me. Looks like its a great performan and the faster AF than the Canon 85/1.2II would be very welcome. Makes me think, maybe i should try it. Damn. ;) On the other hand, i'm pretty sure there will be an ART-version.

Zeiss seems to be focusing entirely on image (and build) quality here. Despite lots of 50 1.2's and even faster out there, Zeiss has picked for this first Otus the much more typical 1.4 and pushed the focal length out a little to make it easier to design. I would bet big money that if they did a 21 Otus it would be the typical 2.8 (and the size of an Optimo, I guess, since their regular 21 2.8 is already practically the size of an Otus :P ). I'd even say a 25 (again, 2.8) is probably more likely than a 21.

25mm f2.8 no way in 2014.....they have 25mm ZE/F f2.0.
They must compete with other high end glass for $4-6,000 per lens. I expect new Otus 25mm to be f1.4.

Yes, they have to do something more special on the wider end, there are some really good ZE/ZF/CP.2-lenses in that area. The 21/2.8, the 25/2.0, and 28/2.0 are all fine, the 15/2.8 is fantastic. Well, there is room for higher apertures and some improvements, everything can be made better. But i agree, they don't really need to touch those lenses yet.

Thats actually whats making me curious about what they're planning. I'm excited for the 85 and 35, but i think the real interesting stuff comes afterwards. A new highspeed 50 was overdue and the right choice for a start, extending the line with a 85 and 35 is the right path to choose.

Hmmm, they could make a new 18mm...

BTW, There are also rumors about Otus Zoom lenses.
