  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW YORK + EPIC

I'm cringing at some of the grades, because Epic's ability to hold information in the highlights and shadows is creating some bad choices, although it's technically interesting to see the range that's possible :) But I think Jared intended the model to look slightly sweaty and grungy (a sheen of sweat on her amazing cheekbone). That sheen is basically a highlight, but it contains enough information to basically grade it out, making her face look quite flat when it's gone. Also, you can then see every pore, so the model might be pissed.

Similarly, the shadows in the factory backdrop can be substantially reduced, thanks to the large range of black levels possible in the Epic image. However, that's a bad choice, artistically, in this case.

After removing the highlight on her face, and the shadows in the background, because, hey, we can! it starts to look like a Sears catalog image.

But that's a testament to the Epic, because you couldn't even attempt it with most other cameras. Artistically though, it screams for a contrasty look, with crushed blacks, like the original grade in the first image. But to be able to go from a flat, washed-out (sorry, boring) grade to a crunchy, dirty (great) look with the same raw file is phenomenal.

well done...

WOOOOOOOW!

This cam (I don't even know if it qualifies as a cam) i AMAZING! I mean... how can a snapshot from a movie be better quality then a photo from my DSLR. It's just insane!

I pushed this grab to the limits and it still was beautiful. I bow my head to all the people involved in this project and have to say: It is going to be LEGEN -wait for it - DARY

ps. Cool grabs Jarred! As someone previously wrote: You've got talent!

You are right Steve. I guess I was asking for more red on the right because the BG looked dull. But more contrast may be all Rytter's image needs. I just love how clean and crisp he got the girl, probably more so after seeing so many dark takes. I haven't been able to play with the file but I should. It isn't fair that I comment without posting something of my own. I'll do one as soon as I get a chance.

Well said Steve!

Add to that well over 4k resolved detail in 2k times and there is no arguments, at all.

And I agree that that is a nice grade Rytter. I would also try intensifying the red glow on the right (0.02).
(BTW, you need to use your real name to post Rytter)

My name is Carl Rytterfalk, I'm blogging about three layered photography over at www.rytterfalk.com and even if RED is bayer - I love it :) - I tried to add Carl before my last name but somehow I failed to find the right spot - also I tried many times to change my avatar with a picture of myself without luck. :)

EDIT: Now I found that I tried to change my "profile picture" all the time. :) So here I am.. But I can't find where my full name goes.

Good to have you here Carl. Sorry if a bit strong on my earlier response.

Graeme

Some of my experiments to get a sort of diverse film look out of EPIC-M shot by Jarred:

Classic still photo Kodak film look.
EpiCM_DXO_Kodachrome200_1K.JPG

DXO Film Pack2: Color negative film: Kodak Elite Color 400 and Color Positive film: Kodachrome 200.

Kodak Cine film look:

GenArts Sapphire Film Effect: Kodak Neg film stock 5218 and Kodak Print film stock 5283.

Fuji F 500 cine look with filters:

Tiffen filter collection (DFX V2 software):Rosco Storaro Selection Gels + The Foundry Re-Grain effect with Fuji F 500 grain look.

All files were output as a REDlogFilm in TIFF compression @ 4K from RCX.

Thank you Sanjin for this. The diversity of looks available from a single frame is what amazes me most about Epic.

Mike aggreed.

It's a RAW @ the highest resolution possible on the market and there is no any sort of Log-C or S-Log DR+Color sensor rendering and recording "lousy tricks"

that we can find with some other digital cine cameras that actually functioning as a WYSIWYG video that is pretty old fashioned and creative limited style.

The main point that you have to find your desired look later in the post but that fact already was scared a lot of people especially older ones in the industry.

Very important is that before you have to learn and get experienced to know how to make right shots that means you have to test and practice all the time continuously.

Also I'm happy that RED almost daily improving Color Science and that means our future with RED will look bright.

Finally got around to playing with this shot. And I love how far you can push it.
Thanks Jarred.

Took me long enough to realize I had forgotten to look for the alpha R-X in Recon.

Think I could have pulled diffusion back a little if I kept at it. Maybe also desaturated the left side a little bit more, or a lot more and really amp up the red and raise contrast for fun. But Jared nailed the gritty.

Thank you Jared for this great image you let us play with.

Heres another tinker I did in RX...Can't wait to get some motion footage!

I just took that frame and ran it through my 32 float pipe. Uh I'm sure you guys realize it, but jesus that frame can be pushed into almost any color/gamma space and can actually be used to relight cg imagery with the proper analysis tools. Nice work Graeme , jared...just wow.

PS P7 space is really the place to look at this stuff.

Hello I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I am asking myself a lot on the possible post manipulations on images from the red system and here I took the chance to experiement jus 2 tests. One basic color grade on exr from Redcine in AE, an one hdr manipulation in PS.
I assume iso on the image is 1260, maybe I missed it but could someone tells me what was the lens used and the aperture ?
I would like to make some hyperealistis architectural film presentations, and I m wondering if it would be possible to do it with an epic (or even with a scarlet).
I am also wondering if someone like me (simple artist/photographer) can place an order on an epic or a scarlet, are orders reserved to some category of people or vips production companies etc... I apologize in advance if my question is stupid, but I see a lot of rush on Red, and that is a simple question I had.
Sorry for bad english and thank for your attention.
