  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Viewfinder (EVF) has occasionally Green and Pink Noise

I also have had the strange false noise demon attack our EVF, but typically only on start-up. Most of the time it works just fine. I love that crazy thing. GREAT viewfinder overall.

strange - EVF didn't work last week. (see my post above)
it did work this morning - the only negative thing was black and white noise pattern on the lower part of the EVF - in the left corner under the histogramm.

after reinstalling build 17 the noise disappeared.

i assume the problems are in relation to cold temperatures. any observations?

regards,
martin

I've had this issue as well -- colour noise in the EVF. Infrequent. Not a temperature issue for me, I got rid of it by re-booting.

Okay, there's a possibility that it could also be just an errant indication in the EVF that the battery is super low and it's struggling for full power.

Have you all any advice on this bug? As I am having this problem now on my viewfinder. Did anyone send their EVF back to RED? Any success with cables changes? Any other advice

Thanks in advance

Taylor
I've sent my EVF back to Red twice now (experiencing the "green noise" issue and EVF was too contrasty- brightly lit faces looked like putty w/no detail).

EVF seems to have less detail than my LCD- especially in highlights. Should that be the case?

When I turn on the luminosity test pattern, there is no definition between the grey bars in my EVF, but with the LCD it clearly shows each grey bar...which leads me to believe the LCD has more latitude than my EVF. Am i wrong?

please help-

my EVF bands too- help me

my EVF bands too- help me

I'm still having this problem as well. Sometimes it looks a little like posterization (or I guess what others are calling banding)...the colors do funny things.

It would be really nice to hear something from red on this besides...wiggle your cable a bit...or...reinstall your current build...(because I've done all those things..and I think we can all agree by the various threads across the board that there is most likely something internally wrong with the evf or connections)

The overexposed faces, cars, buildings look like putty- colors just band together. people are experiencing this problem? Does it have anything to do with Dark Detail????????
thanks,
doug

I really often turned Dark Detail off too because i just had weird looking Highlights and bright Exposed Image Parts in the Viewfinder. With Dark Detail off it got a lot better, not to say almost the same as LCD

Hi all, I thought I might aswell jump in and share. We had the same issue of the green noise 2 weeks after we received our red. By unplugging and re plugging the EVF the noise is gone with no start up time wait or anything. Tech support said we should re install firmware, which didnt help. Do a black shading, neither. Swap cables. You know the answer. So we thought it was manageable until the HDMI output was put away and stopped working. So we had to send the camera back to RED's HQ. I dont think one issue was related to the other, it was pure bad luck. But seizing the opportunity we hoped RED could fix the green noise in the EVF while solving the other issue. We had to take the cam+evf+cables to LA from Colombia which was a pain. (for our pocket aswell) and after a couple of days we had it back. For our sad surprise the EVF started failing a couple of weeks after that. My suggestion is DO NOT send the camera back yet, lets wait and hear from them once they have figured out whats going on. If we all are having this issue probably they have seen it too and are trying to solve it. This camera is a work in progress. We are part of it and we might as well be patient. Hope some from red shows up in this thread and updates us on the status of this issue. I am sure they will figure it out.
Hey, at least we know how to temporarily solve it no?
Best,

BTW I dont think an optical view finder is the answer to our prayers. The mechanics surrounding that would be so not cost effective. And I think that by adding mechanical parts to the equation would be a mistake. Lets wait until they improve the electronics they have and it will be a charming experience.
