  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Viewfinder (EVF) has occasionally Green and Pink Noise

I spoke to a tech at RED regarding this issue and they suggested re-installing the firmware. Not sure if that will completely solve the issue cause I haven't had time to do so but my guess is it's not just a bug and there is another issue going on as well. I'll test this when I get time to do so.

Another suggestion from RED was to do a factory Reset in the Menu when our LCD was not showing a picture at all. That did sadly not help either. I will try the Firmware update.

The other cable we tried did have the Problem only once in 3 Shooting days. i think EVF and 2 Cables have to go to RED to look at it.

Weird that so many people seem to have that Problem, luckily it is really a minor one and doesnt really hurt in the middle of the shoot. Just shouldnt be of course.

The Path with the connectors sound the most logical to me now.

RED, we shall not open our LCD and EVFs ourselves, should we ?

Okay,

So today I experienced a different issue then before. Up until now, we would occasionally get strange colored (pink and green) noise in the image of the EVF when we would boot the camera. This has always been solved by unplugging the cable and plugging it back in. However today, I saw for the first time, really bad noise in the blacks and shadows. Others have been complaining about this as well, but this was the first time I'd experienced it. It seems as though a lot of us are having EVF issues.

EVF Noise

I have noticed the same effect and some view finders seem to have it worse than others. My solution has been simply to unplug and then plug back in the EVF. Sometimes that knocks it down a little bit and other times it knocks it out completely. Occasionally I have had to power down the camera and start back back up to get the fuzzy little bastages to go away.

Hey,

we did not sent the EVF back yet ( and the LCD too, since it went down once completly) because we figured it is best to send it when the Audio Board Upgrade will be made. But of course the Problem is there and the only temporary fix is to unplug the cable and replug. It really has to be the connectors at the EVF / RED side.

Greetings,

Alex

Yep, we have this green noise in shadows on about every other boot. I usually just reboot, and it goes away.

Also notices that the EVF looks like an DLP data projector, where RGB images are shown after echoer in a fast rate. When your eye is still, the image is formed properly in the eye, but if it's moved the colors will be in different places.

Thanks for the updates. One thing I have checked is if you bring up a test chart in the monitor menu area you can see the effect of the banding quite pronounced in the Luma or Chroma ramp charts. Lots of banding in what was once a smooth ramp from black to white. This banding is evident in my LCD as well. Could it be a monitor output function on the camera? I can not seem to make it go away at all now... Thankfully it is not affecting r3d's or HD monitor outputs. I have put a ticket in at RED. I'll post any updates I find

Thanks

This type of Banding you describe seems like a different type of Error than pink green noise, do i see that correct ? We never had that kind of strong Banding in LCD / EVF Problem yet.

Greetings, Alex

I've gotten really bad noise (green colored) in the shadows as well. It always seems to be a connector issue for me because if I pull the cable and blow on it it goes away.

Very distracting but thankfully not in the recorded image.

Well, so it seems that a lot of people are having this Problem, a question at the Tech guys from RED Team, what is the real cause and possible resolve ?

Thanks a lot

Alex

the EVFs are basically flaky

the EVFs are basically flaky

On pretty much every shoot I've teched I've had operators and DPs complain about weird EVF problems. Either the image looks crappy in various different ways at some point during production or the image flickers or drops out... all sorts of stuff.

I've come to the knee-jerk conclusion that RED chose to "cheap out" somewhat on the EVF (cheap LCD? rushed manufacturing? who knows). They just seem to be flaky pieces of gear overall. I'm glad they've been redesigned for the DSMC system. Here's hoping they've solved the various problems.

Hello,

our Viewfinder arrived today and shooting with it all day long, it had the following Problem 2 times: Suddenly in the EVF you see in some Areas Green or Pink Noise, kind of like the False Color display but only in Areas with a specific Stop. Also not very helpful noise. HDSDI does not have it. RED LCD might have it too, but cant check since it doesnt work at all anymore since 3 days.

The only Solution to bring the EVF back to normal was unplugging the cable and plugging in Again.

Any Ideas ? Could it be Camera or EVF ?

Greetings

Alex

I have had this problem with HDMI cables and DVI cables on projection systems. If unplugging and reconnecting the cable cures it temporarily, it is likely a dirty or intermittent contact problem or a bad connector or cable. Try some CAIG Progold or DEoxit contact cleaner, carried by most Radio Shacks some high end Hi-Fi electronics dealers. If this doesn't work, try a new cable before assuming it is a hardware issue.

ah David, this seems like a good thing to try of course, we will do that, but the weird thing is that it happens with 1 week old EVF and cables and over 7 inches of Distance and not very long cable runs.

Yes, I have had the problem with new displays and new gold alloy contact cables. It could still be a defective cable or connector or some contact contamination from manufacturing. With digital displays it doesn't take complete loss of contact to corrupt the signal. It could also be the camera or display connector.
New or not the cable is the most likely culprit. Substandard termination crimps or cold solder joints will do it. Its the easiest thing to try first.

Hi.

I have the same problem here in Brazil yesterday.
But it occur after hours shooting in a very hot time.
The only Solution was unplugging the cable and plugging in Again. But the same problem occur again, so I dont now if I need to change the cable or the EVF.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

I'm still having this problem as well. Sometimes it looks a little like posterization (or I guess what others are calling banding)...the colors do funny things.

It would be really nice to hear something from red on this besides...wiggle your cable a bit...or...reinstall your current build...(because I've done all those things..and I think we can all agree by the various threads across the board that there is most likely something internally wrong with the evf or connections)

my EVF is not brand new, but i treat every piece of gear with respect - and my EVF like raw (!) eggs.

last tuesday it has been working all day - no problem at all!

wednesday morning we started shooting early in the cold and the EVF wasn't working. the LCD did and the dop was cool, so we continued working with the LCD.

after plugging the EVF cable into the camera the EVF just showed a GREEN and PINK noise pattern, no picture and menu at all. the tally light blinked three times and went off.

i tried the following to solve my problem:
- i put the EVF under my jacket to warm it up
- i crosschecked the LCD / EVF cables ... the LCD did work with the EVF cable.
- i rebooted several times
- i plugged and unplugged the EVF
- i ended up renting a EVF to continue the production - the EVF from the rental company worked fine, also with my EVF cable.

i contacted RED support and they suggested reinstalling the firmware - which i will do tonight, because we wrapped production today.

anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

regards,
martin
