  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW TO RED? A few things to think about

I've been working with Chad Bonanno ( one of the members on here ) since 2011 when he got his first Scarlet.
Over the years I've had the opportunity to perform in front of the lens as well as begin operating, a few days ago
I took delivery of my first Red Camera - Raven #RVN-000901 & am looking forward to learning more !

I think this has something to do with fragmentation. I always thought about it this way. If I want my media to run 100% efficient then I clear the card. And record from start to full. If I deleted the 12th file I recorded and that file was only 2GB. I would hate for my next recorded clip to try writing my next 10GB clip to that 2GB space and then hunt to find the next available 8GB to continue recording. Maybe if I was recording at a low enough speed that would be fine. But if I was shooting 120fps and maxing out data rates I would not want any glitches occurring.
 
This is so stupid that I do not think it is correct.

How come that a $6k camera don´t allow deleting files? I could do that in my PC in 1989 and in all cameras and computers ever since.

I asked the Red rep in Sweden about this and he was positive that it is possible to delete clips, but having no Raven at hand yet, he said he would check that.
 
You can not delete files in camera and it has to do with how the data is written to the SSD card and the way the card is formatted. It has been this way since the very first REDONE.

Once thing you can do is use PRE-Record. The camera lets you PRE-record for either 10 or 30 seconds. I've used this mode on several occasions.

Can I delete a clip from the SSD when in the reader?
 
I think the ordering process is probably the most difficult for many redusers ... Here are my suggestions ...

1) your Bomb Squad Rep is your friend. You get a rep when you order something, all your questions should go to him/her. Your bomb squad rep does not spend all day reading reduser, and is giving you answers that have worked through the chain. If your waiting on something it does not hurt sending a status question, if you don't get an answer call red up ... Red is always interested in their customer and never think they are ignoring you. Also be professional, never quote private email between you and your rep in reduser.

2) Jarred is trying to give reduser a heads up, but he doesn't have a crystal ball. About 6 months before initial testing happens you normally get a clue that something is going to change. After that initially testing occurs it takes around 6 months to a year for the product to go to volume(with a small percentage of products never going to volume). Don't confuse the initial testing with a volume release, on the average I kind of expect 18 months between preorders for initial testing and full volume (i.e. You could be waiting 18 months between preorder and getting something).

3) just put the deposit in as soon as possible, and don't put the full amount in your account. Red really has no idea how long something will take between concept and full volume, get the preorder in as early but don't plan on a shoot given that order. Think of it as a deposit stating your interest of which you can get back, and your merely getting into a queue.

4) when you enter a deposit que way after the initial deposit date, it has a long tail between initial testing and production volume, so the start of the tail gives really no indication when full volume is going to occur. Again, just send a note to your bomb squad rep when u get paranoid. Just because someone has received a camera or part doesn't mean that red has gotten to volume, at some point if your not in the initial que I think it's better to just wait for full production volume(this is marked on the red.com with a 1 to 3 week shipping date).

I suppose that thousands of Red users have gotten used to this "delete/format bug". I say bug, because it could´t qualify as a feature, could it?

So I get that together with all the good stuff in Red Raven. But still ...

lmao ... but I thiink for new redusers it's better to think WHY red did something a specific way rather then call red incompetent while not doing a simple google search ( and if you want to argue the point dredge up one of the threads on this so I can properly ignore it).

For future reference, since this thread is called, "NEW TO RED?" If you are a new REDUSER, and you have a question you want answered on REDUSER, try asking it in a humble, respectful, manner. Asking your question in a disrespectful manner will usually lead to your question not being answered properly.

Now, back on topic. While we may disagree on this subject, I consider data integrity a more important "feature" than deleting takes off of a mag. After properly doing my research, I believe that RED has made the correct logical choice given the options, and associated limitations.

I now invite you to do your own research and draw your own conclusions on the matter.

I am sorry for using the word "stupid" earlier. Shouldn´t have done that.
But I have not called anybody "incompetent".
I have followed reduser.net since 2007 and have never seen anything about this non-deleting properties. For me, with limited budget and no assistants, I need to bring a computer and a reader on every assignment. I suppose that is what RED owners do and that I have to do the same. With my present equipment I can bring much more media (where I can delete clips in camera) and more power on a job and do not necessarily need a computer. Investing in a RED RAVEN will give me better footage and more options but equipment will be heavier and need more planning. I will accept that.

I don´t think my question about this OS-thing is out of line. Red is constantly releasing firmware with bugfixes, but if they do not think it is a bug they will not fix this. Understandable.

If RED owners think that this is a feature, then it is OK. I have twice by mistake deleted some nice footage, and hate that. I could possibly have avoided that if I had used the RED manner of media caring.

The above mention of "data integrity" is the first reason I have read that makes some sense.
 
Also, you don't need a computer or an assistant to properly operate a RED by yourself. Just proper planning and careful execution.

You now have a top of the line camera, and it will demand top of the line performance from you, or it will leave you in its dust. Sort of like how buying a Lamborghini doesn't mean you are able to drive it as successfully as your Honda Civic. You absolutely need to step up your game otherwise the Lamborghini will kill you.

You obviously did not understand what I meant. Do you want me to explain?

And I do not understand what you mean with the Lamborghini parabel. Is it something "humble and respectful"?

I used a Sony/Atomos Shogun combo for a while before purchasing a Raven. It is exactly this same way as well when recording to the Shogun (UHD 422 ProRes HQ, or any other resolution).
You cannot delete clips off the SSD when mounted on the Shogun. You can however delete them if you remove the drive and then view (and delete) on your computer. I suppose there is some technical logic behind this, but fortunately it is something I have come to accept even before jumping on the RED bandwagon.... Just my humble 2 cents :)

Sorry. I always forget that genuine humor seems like sarcasm on the Internet. Definitely not my intent.

The reason your post made me laugh to myself is because this is one of the most asked questions in REDUSER history. While it hasn't been brought up in a while, in the 2007-2011 days, this was a weekly thread topic.

And what I meant with the Lamborghini metaphor, is that top of the line engineering requires top of the line operating in order to fully realize the potential of the object in question. So, even though the RAVEN is priced competitively with cameras that are much easier to operate, its roots are in the professional world, not the consumer, or even prosumer, world.

Thus, like every reduser before you, your camera will demand that you to become a better filmmaker, or it will never give you the results your looking for. So, for some, it means figuring out how to manage their media/power in the field. For me, it meant building my own personalized cinema camera package, that was built exactly the way that I needed it.

Yes, shooting on RED will require more planning. Yes, shooting on RED will be more difficult. But if you are up to the challenge you will see a massive increase in the quality of the images that you will end up delivering!

The technical logic behind the decision has to deal with the way data is formatted. More specifically, with the way it is written, stored, and deleted off of the mag. To ensure that every single pixel, that is captured, makes it from the sensor, to the theater, requires a very specific way of handling the data. One of the drawbacks of this system however, is the fact that you cannot delete individual takes off the mag, in camera although (you shouldn't do it on the computer either).
