  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Timescapes Timelapse: "Mountain Light"

You're definitely right about that Bristlecone in the middle part. On that shot, I misjudged where the Milky Way would rise, so I had to try to drag my whole dolly across the dirt to try to change the setup... long story... hehe... sometimes circumstances get in the way of the art-teeest!

1080p is uploading now. Will post it here. I think you guys will be able to get a real dose of what FF35 is all about in several of these shots when you see it at 1080p. I am still stunned by the clarity.

Oh sorry, Paolo! Thanks. For dark skies with the Milky Way I shoot ISO 3200 with the 5D2. For moonlight, usually ISO 800 or 1600. The 5D2 has remarkable low-light performance. On my old Canon 350D Rebel XT, I could only shoot ISO 800, max.

Thanks Tom, now i have to understand what i do wrong to make my high iso 5d2 shots noisy (one reason being shooting a lot of 6400...).
Again, you are a master.

6400 is too fast. I only use that for my "night drivelapse" while shooting with my 24mm at f/1.4. Otherwise, 3200 is the limit for me.

Nice Tom!

It's a good skill but I would say you need a strong IDEA behind this to move all beyond pictures in sort of inner world of human imagination

just as Ron Fricke is doing it (also he has much better technology than yours "advanced touristic semi-pro video camera" like 5MK2.

Get RED1 with build 21 and REDROCKET with Magma PCExpress card box, MacBook Pro 17", set of MPs that can cover your "focal" need

then go to the wilderness and shoot your dream movie.

Also I think widescreen 2.33:1 would much better format to watch in a theater.

Jeez, Sanjin, I have a hard enough time cropping those skies to 16x9! :badputer:

:sifone:

Okay's here a direct 1080p download (247MB), for those with comps and screens that can use it:

I don't think there is a video camera on the planet that can F with 5.6K FF35 RAW, unless of course it's a prototype sitting on Jim or Jarred's desk. ;)

Stunning work Tom...absolutely stellar! You're a gifted artist - especially for documenting unique looks at the natural world.

I'll bet the new capabilities of Epic and Scarlet will unlock some breathtaking timelapse possibilities. Fun times ahead....eh my friend?

Thanx for posting the 1080p version.....looks soooo good!!

I got MF'd, huh? :sifone:

BTW, here is a 25MB iPhone MP4 version for direct download if anyone is interested: http://www.timescapes.org/MountainLight.mp4

I'm still looking for a producer or production company to help shepherd this project through to completion and distribution, so if you guys know anyone, let me know! Thanks!

Wow Tom this one is your best!
And yea you should travel around the world!

Very nice as always Tom. I'm picking up my Canon 24mm 1.4 mk2 on Thursday. Just in time for my trip across the country. Some of those shots with the bristolcone pines look like the tree is on a turn table or something. Your use of motion control is the best I have seen, mainly because you use small moves that creep. Gives a nice floating effect for the viewer.

Thanks, Drew. I'd be curious to compare your 24 M2 to my 24 M1. I hear that the M2 owns it at 1.4, but might have more vignetting. M2 has less CA, I think. I think you will be stoked with the pure visual awesomeness of that 24 + 5D2 5.6K RAW.

I had to ditch that EF 16-35 II because the vignetting at 2.8 was ridiculous. I might go back to the Nikon 14-24 or try to get an EOS-converted Contax Zeiss 17-35.

Entirely my pleasure, Tom. It almost seems that is your intent - to give us a sense of who we are, where we are, the incredible question of our existence and consciousness that we live while surrounded by this incredibly complex and beautiful system of the universe which circles endlessly above our heads.

Absolutely love your juxtapositions of the trees / mountains / antennas in the foreground reaching up to the stars. It's so damn visually poetic. What nails it for me is your slow dolly/truck, forcing a slight perspective shift as the universe spins above. It's just incredible.

You're very welcome, and thank you for doing what you're doing. Incredibly inspiring.

Dillon

This is about the nicest thing anyone could possibly say to me. Thank you.
