  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New timecode slate - Fuze Ti: Fuze Slate

This looks great. Couple of thoughts:

1) Do you have plans for an illuminated version?
2) Would this fit in a standard Versaflex pouch for storage?
3) Always thought it would be nifty to have a recessed bracket for a dry erase on the back side. I can't tell you how many dry erase markers have walked away or go MIA during shoots + it's impossible to store them together velcroed to the back.

No backlight planned for this model, perhaps in the future:-) No idea if it'll fit a Versaflex pouch, but googling it I would guess it'll fit their PS-2 and larger pouches.

This is a down and dirty test between my upcoming Steel Slate and a Denecke slate. Timecode from an Ambient Lock-it box and the camera is also thrown into the mix for good measure. This test was shot on the Red Epic and was jam synced from the master clock just before filming.

To sum up the tests, comparing the timecode at 26 hours and at 16 hours for Ambient...
-Red Epic timecode runs faster than the rest in this test.
-The Fuze slates is a little slower than the Denecke and Ambient, but the Fuze slates themselves are within one frame.
-The Ambient is slightly slower than the Denecke.
-Calibration for the Fuze slates will be further refined for production and should land it right between the Ambien and Denecke.

The Denecke brightness begins to drop before the Steel Slate on 4 AA batteries, however the Steel Slate display drops to unusable levels before the Denecke. I'm not sure but the Denecke slate may be automatically lowering the brightness itself to extend battery life where as the Steel Slate does not do that automatically. Surprisingly, to me anyways, the Lock-it box dies at only 16 hours.

All AA batteries used are brand new from Costco, Duracell Coppertop.

Special thanks to ToneMesa (http://tonemesa.com) for the Denecke slate used in this test, as well as Tonaci for the Ambient Lock-It Box (http://tonaci.com/)

Hopefully this will be the last update before the kickstarter begins:-)

I had hoped to have submitted the campaign for approval by kickstarter by now, but the only thing left for me to do is the video for the kickstarter. If all goes well it should submitted sometime next week, but keep in mind when the video is finally posted that there's a reason why I work behind the camera or mixing console and not in front of it hehe.

The final prototype has made its way through Tone Mesa and Trew Audio. From the feedbacks the slate's height may be cut by about an inch, but a large part of the decision will depend on the metal fabricator having to retool, so we shall see:-P Improvements are also in the works for the finger slots on the back of the clapper sticks.

Remember you can sign up for email notification over a prefundia: http://prefundia.com...fuze-slate/456/

Thanks everyone for your replies and your support:-) Have fun!

Many thanks Tom! Fingers crossed for a successful campaign:-)

Pledged! Good luck!!!

PS - Not sure what cable I'll need for Epic (when June rolls around and slates are shipping)?

If you happen to be one of the very few with a Pro I/O module you can use the pretty standard 5-pin lemo timecode cable:-)

Otherwise, you will need two cables. One is the http://www.red.com/store/products/3bnc-to-00-lemo-sync-cable to jam timecode into the Epic or Scarlett. The yellow BNC is the timecode in.
The second cable can be either a 5-pin lemo to BNC or 1/4" to BNC. There's a variety of options on this end that will work, including existing cables many people use for Denecke and Ambient slates.

After the Kickstarter finishes I will look into how I can begin building these cables as well at a competitive price:-)

Thanks everyone!

Congrats George. As I was pondering over the $130 shipping fee to Canada, the 10 units at $500 got filled up! Terry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha ha. All good.

Hi Bob,

The rate was average shipping for Europe. Unfortunately kickstarter does not differentiate between Canada or Mexico with the rest of the world. Just did a quick check and looks like shipping to Canada is roughly 1/3 of the cost of shipping to Europe. I'll look into this matter and see if I can come up with a feasible solution:-)

edit:
New special reward added for Canada and Mexico that factors in the lower shipping cost:-)

Thanks for your support Bob and bringing up shipping costs for Canada:-)

Thanks Nikhill:-)

Mark Pederson gets the credit for introducing me to Prefundia:-)

I was part of the testing, and I think this will be a very popular intermediate option for owner operator situations.
