  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New telelens from Canon

Matthew Duclos, COO of Duclos Lenses, has notes about this lens in his blog "Circle of Confusion". IIRC it covers a 31.4mm image circle and is designed for S35. Best guess is that it will handle 5KFF on Dragon with slight vignetting at the wide end and clean at 5KHD. What is perhaps more interesting to folks planning to spend most of their time in the tele end is whether there's any port-holing at 6KFF past 500mm…

Looking forward to Matt/Evin/Phil getting one in hand to test…

Cheers - #19

It's an interesting lens, but for a multitude of reasons I would define this as specialty glass.

It's an impressive design and concept. Canon is flexing that muscle here.

I do see rather interesting possibilities in relationship to broadcast with this one though.

This looks terrific for wildlife work. It's only slightly heavier than the Sigma 300-800mm and (probably) superior optically and mechanically. I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do.

Vignetting is extremely little at 6K FF.
Especially wide(er) open.
When you close the iris (20+), it vignettes pretty much up to 500mm.
Haven't been able to test it thoroughly but it does have data communication issues on Weapon CF & F (PL mount).
Communication freezes once you touch the iris.

RED support is onto it and advises a lens firmware upgrade, but Canon is difficult to upgrade, let alone figure out which build you have installed.
Apart from that it's an amazing lens when you need long to extreme long shots and can't drag a load of lenses with you.

BIG downside is the pitch of the iris and zoom rings.
Focus is a normal cine 0.8 but the other two are 0.5.
So there I stand with $14K+ worth of RED 3-Axis FIZ with no 0.5 drive gear available :-/
And the iris ring is too narrow to wrap a zip gear around....

The zoom-range is beyond believe.
I think the first time I zoomed in completely I thought twice "ok, gotta be there about now".... think again...
There seems to come no end to it :-)
