  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi Guys,

check out this www.rubbermonkeysoftware.com . This is a conform and extract tool that bypasses current systems to streamline your online process.
EDL ---> monkey extract---->DPX -----> grading software.

Very intuitive and elegant piece of software

This will save you a lot of time we just used it for our first red feature!

f*ck....this is awesome..for me as nonscripter.

a couple of questions:

is output limited to DPX?
or is U QT possible too?
is it always full debayered?
are different scaling algorythms available?
how is the rendering of different resolutions handled if its not full debayered?
what about colorspaces?

damn i love the price

outputs can be QT or TIF or DPX
Debayer in 1/4 and 1/2 are also options
scaling is available in all resolutions same as red rushes

how is the rendering of different resolutions handled if its not full debayered?
Not sure what you mean?

Colorspaces are also supported!

1st this is a cool redrushes variant.
what i would like to see is a setting something like this:
half debayer for 4k stuff, but full debayer for the 2k stuff in the timeline...
is this possible?

it would be cool if rubber monkey could export rocksolidly avidfiles...
then comes the offline edit...then conform again with rubber monkey.

howto? I got the folder with the tiff files and the new edl - now I would like to go back to fcp and reconnect the whole thing.....

I stand corrected on a previous post - it seems like quite a handy utility... but... I just tried a 3 event EDL and could not get it to extract anything. Looks simple enough, but haven't been successful yet.

Hi Michael,

Am standing by to help. the App works great on all the test machines we could find, but if we missed something we can hopefully fix it quickly.

Do you have red alert/redline installed. PS: don't use beta version 3.4.8 . It has a bug with spanned R3D files.

Thanks

Also experiencing this bug with several customers. I think Deanan is on top of it.

been a beta tester for this for a while its quite the brilliant piece of software for grabbing data from any source reorganizing it and making sense of things.

It has been very straightforward and easy to use.

The Test Option to render only TIFF files is a little bit bad. I need to test the DPX files and see if they match up and have all metadata, as how will look like the filename and folder structure. Also I need to load it into Baselight and see if the autoconform work. Would that possible please only to change demomode from tiff to dpx?
Second Question: How you work with speed changes in the EDL?

thx

Rainer

DPX has the full filename as source and the matching timecode of the source time of day timecode.

The plan from the Avid side is creating an XML from the source sequence of all layers and effects as a pull then representing that as a CMX 3600 EDL - so all the heavy lifting has already been done including handles, tolerances, etc. As I have mentioned early on, it is easier for the NLE to manage it sources since it understands best is composition structure. The output of that is a pull list - how it is represented is pretty straightforward - as CMX, as XML, TAB, comma, etc.

As soon as the engineer gets back from his two weeks vacation, I will have him work on this. What is nice about it is the re-indexing of the R3D files so moving them during the post process is not an issue. With REDCINE, changing the path that is in the XML will prevent the file form conforming which can be frustrating.

I can't work out how this works, can anyone give me a walk through.
thanks

Hi Bob,

Ok here's a step thru.. You have your edit. on FCP or AVID. you output an EDL in the CMX3600 format.

looks like this

TITLE: L.A. TEST FOR EDL.01
FCM: NON-DROP FRAME
001 A017_C03 AA/V C 17:14:22:07 17:14:38:09 01:00:00:00 01:00:16:02
002 A024_C01 V C 12:46:00:05 12:46:42:11 01:00:16:02 01:00:58:08
003 A014_C03 AA C 18:10:30:20 18:11:13:01 01:00:16:02 01:00:58:08
004 A025_C01 AA/V C 17:46:22:10 17:47:19:05 01:00:58:08 01:01:55:03
005 A004_C00 AA/V C 19:32:41:16 19:33:28:06 01:01:55:03 01:02:41:18

Start monkey extract

browse to the edl

browse to the drive that contains all your red footage, you do not need to specify a folder unless you have several projects on the one drive and that could get confusing.

select an output directory. Usually this would be on some fast storage that can playback realtime 1920x1080 or 2k or higher.

I use a ciprico mediavault with 4Tb and fibre channel.. I think minimum for realtime playback will be a 5 drive array with SAS or fibre connection.

This is only if you want realtime playback tho. otherwise an storage will do . Your final film conform with handles will take approx 1.2 Tb of space.

choose your handle size, bearing in mind that an accurate extraction will not need any handles. tho it's nice to have some room to move especially if some shots need speed ramping.

to start with do and extract all edits ( tick box )

ok. you will want to edit the output render settings. These are based on redline options.

choose your file format DPX for most online/conform systems. ie: Baselight, lustre, color, pablo, smoke etc

Choose full quality (debayer).
You can choose to use RSX files, but this is not implemented fully in redline/redalert.. for the moment use metadata and this will represent on set look.

Color/gamma
If you have the relevant setup this is probably going to be redlog, but you will need a viewing LUT to make use of this in your grade.
if not you can play safe with rec709 curves and you will have something that will work for most desktop grading systems.
Colorspace will be REDspace.

Detail
High ( my choice )

Noise reduction
Medium ( my choice )

OLPF Compensation
High ( my choice )

No matrix

Color and gamma setting s are a matter of choice and shot requirements. I recommend spending time with shots in redalert to see what each does and how that can benefit a shot. Not every shot may require the same level of post processing for noise reduction and filtering therefore you can apply separate renders later with monkey extract for those shots they may need it.

SCALE.
tick the box and select and output format
remember you will need to know the aspect of your original footage to use this properly. Lets say for now you are going to do an HD finish.

set width 1920
set height 1080

set fit: Height
Set filter ( Lanczos3 (sharper)

"named after Cornelius Lanczos : ) " a Hungarian mathematician. Will be slower to process but yelds a very nice result for the downsampling.

Crop . keep this unticked.

Select accept ( bottom right hand corner )

hit "extract now"

Go and get yourself a cup of coffee and have a nap : ) Your files will process and let you know progress.. small TIF's are created during processing to show you what edit is being processed.

It will take under 48 hours to complete an entire feature on an dual quad mac.

Cheers!

great thanks i will try this tomorrow. Appreciated!!
