  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New SLR Magic 1,33X Anamorphic adapter for $799

Isn't a "1.33x ana mode" just shooting full-sensor (or rather 16:9) on Epic/Scarlet... or any camera with a 16:9 sensor?

This is the first I'm hearing about the Letus, and to be honest, I like having these kinds of options... Particularly if they're going to push prices down (or functionality up.) The reason I don't mind putting on more glass in the front is that it helps tone down the clinicalness of 4k+ footage. Granted if it hinders the image too much, it'll be a no go, but I tend to like how 3k looks on Scarlet because it's not as overtly video-sharp as 4k can be (I just hate that 3k FOV crops into the sensor so much.) Doubly true when using modern stills glass...

Besides, where are you going to get anamorphics for $800 that look anywhere close to as sharp as either of these adapters?

EDIT: The letus has a some mattebox functionality. Only 2-stage and likely no rotating tray, but still... As a stills-glass add-on it actually looks pretty good... Close, mid, far focus modes (with custom focus so no diopters), multi-coated and uni-coated versions... $2k. Very intrigued, but definitely a try-before-buy product.

Correct but not full sensor. You don't need an "ana mode" when using a 1.33x squeeze lens on a 16:9 sensor.
On the red one mx for instance, the ana modes are designed for 2x squeeze lenses, but you lose captured sensor resolution.

The advantage of a 1.33x squeeze lens on a 16:9 sensor is that you can utilize almost the entirety of the sensor (I believe you shall shoot 4kHD for correct ratio and not 4kfullframe) but, as mentioned in this thread, the anamorphic qualities are less pronounced than on a 2x squeeze lens.

Here is the Letus 1.33x adapter

Good thing you brought the Letus one up, relevant to the discussion thanks.
It is more than twice the price of the SLR magic though, but it seems it will accommodate a lot more lenses.

Full specs:

- Works with current prime and zoom lenses
- Focusable with 0.8mm gear (The adapter has 3 positions: Close Focus, Mid Focus and Far Focus replacing the need for add-on diopters. For critical focus the user can fine tune further).
- High resolution. Capable of at least 2K with most lenses
- Custom optical components
- Multi-coated for superior image quality but still retain elegant flare. (a single coat option will also be available that will flare more. The multi-coat version has higher resolving power)
- Made ready with matte box
- Patent pending clip on 2 stage filter
- Mounting solution for 114mm outside diameter lens like Zeiss CP* and adapting ring for smaller lens like 77mm, 82mm, etc.
- 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 mounting points
- CNC aluminum housing
- 1.33x squeeze, which will work with all current crop of 16:9 cameras, bringing it to a standard 2.39:1
- Estimated pricing of $1,700 USD
- Release date currently estimated late October / early November

Indeed nice to see. Would love to see how the footage looks when someone puts this with an Otus on a Dragon.

I just wish they would do bigger versions to give better coverage (and resolution) or drop the adapters and build anamorphic hyperprimes for FF35. :)
