  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8

Akin. At this point I think it would be wise to work with your sigma 18-35 and wait for the other Art primes. Sigma might in fact issue a set of cine primes themselves. If they come out with an 85 it would be a very nice set. I am also hopeful they will price them around CP.2 range. At that point they would be a no brainer to decide on.

I havent tested the 24 personally but I very much doubt it doesnt perform as well as the 18-35. If you plan on going full frame the 18-35 vignettes way too much to be of any use at its widest end.

Since this was bumped... I keep trying to convince myself to sell this 18-35 and get the 24mm/1.4 Art, to have a set of 24/35/50 all at F/1.4.
But based on reviews, I really can't justify it if the 24mm doesn't look as good at F/1.4 as the 35/50 and it vignettes more. And if I go FF35 sensor at some point, my 35mm/1.4 Art might be all I need.
Anybody have to make that decision?
Trying to make the same decision here. :)

Reviews aren't convincing the same way as they did for the 35 and 50, thats true. But SIGMA was smart when they started with the 35 and then made the 50. Canon's 35mm and 50mm offerings didn't perform as good as the newer 24L Mark 2. So the gap is smaller and that had to be expected.

Overall the 24 ART seems to be a great performer, with less CA, more contrast than the Canon, but also more vignetting wide open. The bookeh is a bit smoother on the SIGMA too and don't forget the lower price. It matches perfectly the other ART series lenses.

It is a great 24/1.4. I think it's a bit underrated. It's not that hyped as the the previous ART lenses and it's not a record-breaker, but it's a good lens, with some modern improvements.

18-35/1.8 vs 24/1.4 is a tough decision. Both lenses offer something. The 18-35 is usable on Dragon 6k/5.5k starting below 24mm, the prime is 1.4. To be honest, i have the 35mm ART too, but i rarely use it. I mostly put the 18-35 on the cam.

I used to think it was a no-brainer for Sigma at least to adapt their excellent stills optics as Ciné lenses. But it's been a long wait with never a hint of interest from Sigma to throw a bone to the world of cinematography. So now, forgive me, I just tune out Sigma. I know they have great lenses for the price, so that's not an issue.

Maybe they're waiting until the set is complete. SIGMA is in a situation more difficult than Zeiss, Canon or Schneider. They are just starting to get a better reputation in the stills-world and they have no name in the cinema-world... They need something big to get attention. Let them do one ore two more focal lengths, then is the right time.

And even if they start to sell cinema-housed ART glass, i don't think they can go the Zeiss-way by requesting the money you have to pay for a CP.2. SIGMA has to find a spot between Zeiss and Rokinon to make Cine-ART a successful product.

Thanks again, Maik. I hadn't thought that Sigma may be waiting until they could offer a complete set of Ciné-Art primes. That would make a bigger splash than offering one or two lenses a year like SLR Magic may do with their APO lenses. Just wish they'd say something about their plans. As it stands now, it appears SLR Magic is going to fill that gap in terms of price, but a set may take several years to assemble.

Hi Guys,

I am using the photo SIGMA 18-35 on a SCARLET-W, and an RTMOTION Smartknob for controlling the focus/iris, but I find it very noisy, do you have the same problem?

See videos there: https://vimeo.com/262697999/ac56f9df7d

It may seems nothing on the video (especially with the crappy iPhone mic), but it is quite noticeable, and a lot more noisy that any other lenses I've used. The lens actually does not make that much noise when moving the focus, but once it is in the good position it does make that noise.
