  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new REDCINE-X feedback

So what are the M D letters on everything? It seems they reset back to default settings, but BOTH letters reset me to default. ??
I think Camera Metadata and Default.

I think Camera Metadata and Default.

that is what i thought, but it must not be operative right now, since i don't see anything occur when i use them---It only resets all my work applied to a shot therefore brought up questions as to what they did.
....i was expecting some type of button (within each work window) where you can reset back to the default look and then click again to go back to the color/curve/white balance you set within EACH window. So, if you are working an image, you set colors...and you ALREADY set white balance, flut etc.....and you just don't like the colors you applied, then you can reset them to go back to a start point. ??? Am i just asking too much? I thought that this was what those two buttons would do.
I like also to apply settings to the next shot for a start point as well...I know you can do that if you go up to EDIT - Copy Grage - Past Grade...but would be nice to have in the workspace and to apply to next shot or all shots in bin etc....

one million and one.....

Debayering "Nearest Fit" ?...

Debayering "Nearest Fit" ?...

So, what's the difference between setting "Nearest Fit" and "Full" in Export Settings?

I mean this:

So, what's the difference between setting "Nearest Fit" and "Full" in Export Settings?

First note: These settings only apply to software debayer. RED Rocket will always do the full debayer.

Full will always do a Full debayer then if needed scale to output resolution. (Best choice for final output quality)

Nearest Fit will automatically choose the debayer setting that will give you the nearest debayer result size larger than or equal to your output and then if needed downscale to the final output size. (Based on chosen output this can be faster than the full setting at the cost of using a lower quality debayer)

Example 1: If you were exporting a 4k 2:1 4096x2048 clip to a 2048x1024 output:
Full - will first do a full quality debayer resulting in a 4096x2048 image and then scale it to 2048x1024.
Nearest Fit - will do a 1/2 Premium debayer resulting in a 2048x1024 image with no scaling required.
Result - The nearest fit did a faster transcode at the cost of image quality.

Example 2: If you were exporting a 2k 2:1 2048x1024 clip to a 2048x1024 output:
Full - will do a full quality debayer resulting in a 2048x1024 image with no scaling required.
Nearest Fit - will do a full quality debayer resulting in a 2048x1024 image with no scaling required.
Result - Both settings did a full quality decode and took the same amount of time.

Thank you very much Matthew!
:)

in short, whenever possible i must choose: Full debayering (if there's no problem at all with the time it takes to do the transcode) right?

Yes, for final quality output, always do full debayer.
The other selections are there for when you need
quicker output for editorial dailies and other non
final output.

I apologize in advance if any of this has been covered already and it may also be user error on my behalf.

I colored and transcoded a series of commercials this weekend with RedCineX104 and my new RedRocket. It was both M and MX footage. The speed and grading was awesome! My feed back is:

1. When switching to viewing with the RedRocket's HDSDI output: a. The set up window cannot move. b. It is not needed everytime you toggle outputs. It could be set once and left alone. c. A keyboard short-cut of RR output would be awesome.

2. I can't seem to apply a "look Preset" when I am viewing with the Rocket. I have to apply first then switch to Rocket output and then grade.

3. How do I empty the entire timeline?

4. How do I start a new project and clear everything?

5. When I drag multiple clips into the Bins they end up out of order. It is helpful for grading to have them numerically in sequence. It's also easier to miss missing clips (which I did).

6. It is instinctual to me to be able to double-click a thumbnail in the bin and have it load into the viewer.

Great Program! You asked for feedback, here is my 3 cents.

Thanks Much,
Rich

1. keyboard shortcut is a good idea. Still haven't gotten around to adding a boat load of short cuts. soon...

2. can you turn on verbose logging and then do a quick test for us (email me the log)

3. drag select (painful). adding select all and other timeline stuff next.

4. also coming soon

5. switch to list mode and the order by column and then drag into bin.
switching back to icon mode will reflect list mode soon also.

6. double click to player vs double click to timeline. unfortunately, mixed feedback on that and hard to do both. we might do cmd-click or something else for one of them.

Build 104 crash

Build 104 crash

Crash log attached.

I was exporting a clip from Redcine-X. While that was churning away, I started up REDrushes and began exporting there as well (different R3D files). Result: Redcine-X crashed several seconds after REDrushes had begun rendering. Bad to run them simultaneously?

Other Redcine-X thoughts...

I know the UI is a work in progress. I would love to see a few features added to the UI to improve precision and ease of use:

1) A key command to attain finer degree of control (ie, a smaller ratio of slider movement vs mouse movement) when trying to move image adjustment sliders precisely. How about holding command or shift key while dragging slider to get finer resolution and/or slower slider movement?

2) Reset any individual slider by option-clicking it. Reset the new lift/gamma/gain wheels individually by option-clicking. As opposed to only being able to reset all the controls within a tool window.

3) Generate RSX files with Redcine-X? Future feature?

4) Redcine-X recognize RSX files? Future feature?

5) Select a clip in the bin, hit the delete key to remove it from the bin. Same with clips in the timeline. Or command-delete, if the idea is to protect people from inadvertently deleting things...

6) Global looks presets, available to all projects?

7) White balance tool - sometimes it's inexplicably inaccurate. I'm picking white off a DSC where the correct reading would be around 5K, and Redcine gives me results that vary drastically when picking the same point, but on a different frame with identical light, like this:

2/15/10 9:58:08 AM [0x0-0x3f03f].com.red.REDCINE-X[445] Requesting Whitebalance From frame: 377 at ( 0.599121, 0.406250 )
2/15/10 9:58:08 AM [0x0-0x3f03f].com.red.REDCINE-X[445] Requesting Whitebalance Result: Kelvin: 5442.022949 Tint: -15.336450 Status: 0
2/15/10 9:58:58 AM [0x0-0x3f03f].com.red.REDCINE-X[445] Requesting Whitebalance From frame: 59 at ( 0.515625, 0.518555 )
2/15/10 9:58:58 AM [0x0-0x3f03f].com.red.REDCINE-X[445] Requesting Whitebalance Result: Kelvin: 9154.533203 Tint: -8.115126 Status: 0

8) Can we have multiple file browser columns and/or windows or tabs? The file browser is difficult to navigate using the old-school global list view of the entire filesystem. When I'm trying to navigate between 3 or 4 hard drives I have to scroll up/down, fold up arrows and unfold arrows. It would be great if I could control-click a folder in the browser and choose "open new browser" in a contextual menu. Also would be good to sort the browser with the basics - name, date modified - ascending, descending.

9) A bigger, resizable histogram window. And an RGB parade, vectorscope, and waveform monitor. please please please. :-)

10) All the new stuff in Redcine-X is really awesome! :attention9ha:

Best,
Bryan

Ahhh, maybe a preferences selection for timeline vs player?

Tomorrow, I will lay the verbose list on you. The Olympic figure skating is getting really good ;)

Thanks!
Rich

Same as the previous post, please email the crashlog.
Especially the verbose ones. No need to post them here.

1. added to list

2. that's on the list already (reset is also by control group at the moment)

3. nope. .RMD will be replacing .RSX.
RMD is more powerful and future proof

4. see 3. RSX read only.

5. on todo list already

6. they are global

7. looks suspicious. is it recreatable?
if so, can you turn on verbose logging and email me the log?

Windows build 101 is very much a house of cards on my Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Build 96 crashed every now and then, but nowhere as often as b101. A surefire way to crash b101 is to drag video window's status indicator (in a fast forward/rewind sort of way) or tapping arrow keys to view the footage frame by frame.

Please add a still store (frame grab) feature for grading dailies and matching shots. This is an essential part of any grading application, even if it is only intended for dailies. Something where we could grab stills and quickly toggle to view the selected one on and off.

I'd like to see finer control on the Lift/Gamma/Gain controls. maybe with an option key like in color. Also like to see a reset on each control. Most importantly XML import and sent back to FCP!!!!!

Great app. Wasn't too sure about the look at first, but I like the GUI upgrade.
Desperately needs an XML import feature. Keep it up, guys, nice work.

I just exported a 4.5K DPX sequence from the Windows REDCINE-X (101) and noticed that the CPU usage never went higher than 25%. I also noticed that only 5 of my CPU's 8 cores were used.

Is this something that will improve in the future? Getting x3 times the performance i am getting now from my desktop 'supercomputer' would be a life saver for my workflow.
