  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new RED Pro Program...

A really wide lens in the 10-14mm would be nice. I can even handle a good bit of barrel distortion (lets call it an intentional effect).
Would be used for close in action sports filming.

Any word on when we can expect more word on the RED Electronic Lenses?

I am also really interested in these as well since I plan on getting the FF35 Epic. I don't think I will be able to afford to buy both sets so I will have to skip on those beautiful PL-mount primes. :waaa:

I think this set of lenses is a monumental step in the overall Red strategy. It was somewhat the missing link between the affordability of the Red and the high expense of great PL glass.

It does raise a question for me though.. I find it interesting that Red is planning to move future cameras toward FF capability, yet they invest such time and resource in a set of S35 glass. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely don't need or desire a FF camera. I also wonder if there really is a market for FF, outside trying to cover some DSLR market.

For many, and I suspect most, the holy grail has always been to have affordable tools that fully compete with 35mm motion picture film. That, to me, is the be all end all.. And to reduce it even further, the goal, at least indirectly, was 35mm dof characteristics.

It seems that with the Red, the coming s35 Scarlet, and these set of lenses... well, we have achieved for all intents and purposes an affordable option to shooting film.

I wonder, in a positive light, if Red's FF plans may be "adjusted" as they move forward through a tough economy and to solidify the core base customer which as I mentioned, I believe to be S35.

Except that with media convergence huge numbers of shooters in the marketplace now shoot motion footage and stills - thus RED's concept of the DSMC (digital stills and motion camera) to give the masses of convergent shooters an all-in-one camera that with the flip of a switch can be used to shoot both motion footage and stills. In terms of sales, convergence shooters are the giant gorilla in the room - the major market for RED products looking forward.

The biggest portion of convergence shooters usually will need FF35 for their stills work.

I hear what you're saying, but in the history of technology, convergence has never played out they way we expect. (The iPhone is more powerful then many of our first computers, but it still doesn't do much computing)

It's just my opinion, but I think convergence of moving pictures and high-end stills shooting is not the market people think it will be.

I think most pros will fall back to dedicated gear for the individual task. If someone makes a living out of either, then $10k worth of stills gear is not a big deal. Same goes for $50k for a "video" shooter.

Now having said that, I could see some convergence in the consumer / prosumer market, which actually we already see coming with DSLR having some video capabilities.

Just my thoughts.

14mm and a 65mm would be nice
All need to be the same T stop though at T1.9
Is this possible for RED to have all Primes the same T stop?

All primes should be T1.9 except the 300mm and possibly the 14mm. We are looking close at that one. The extra cost of making the 14mm T1.9 might be hard for our customers to swallow. Jury is still out.

I'd love to see a RED 150-600mm like the Canon FD 150-600mm f5.6L zoom.
With that manual slider focus.
I suppose it's a bit of a specialty item, but that lens seems hugely popular with RedUsers... it seems to be a natural choice for sports and wildlife.

KnockOut Films,

Hmmm...I guess we'll have to see how it plays out. In the industries I work in, projects routinely require motion footage and stills. Being a "one-stop-shopping" solution as a bidder or packager for those projects quickly solves the dilemma of the contracting entity - they don't have to take the time and expense to find individual solutions - and in the process makes me more revenue, generated off the same equipment used for both mediums. Beyond that, if we're shooting both motion footage and stills on a project, its a logistical and operational headache to have to transport, setup, and provide security for two completely separate image acquisition systems - we've been doing it, but an all-in-one solution like a FF35 DSMC would be a dream come true for us.

I can understand a 14mm and wider may not be practical at T1.9. I would prefer that it is as fast as all the others. Please take a look at doing a 10mm. The underwater crowd will love you for it. I find that I rent one quite a bit -- A Zeiss stnadard 10mm T2.1 that's about 25+ years old. It's been offered for sale to me, but I personally have real issues with paying $12.5K (typical asking price of that lens these days) for one piece of glass that's over 20 years old. It is an amazing lens though, the near complete lack of distortion is amazing.

Yup, I own one of those and use it extensively on RED One for sports and wildlife shooting. I included one of those on my RED Electronic Lens wish list in one of my previous posts on this thread. It may be a specialty lens, but there are tens of thousands of people in the motion media industry who shoot in those genres - and tons of them have already migrated to RED One and will be also be acquiring Epic FF35 and Scarlet FF35.

Jeff, try the UP 8R. It's a trip.

Sorry for that post and I understand that everybody is so excited about FF lenses, but some of us very interested in MINI primes, PLS!!! need info about them! Anybody from RED TEAM??

THX!

The 8R is a fabulous lens - but has a price tag of $30k USD. An 8R was used extensively on RED by our underwater crew on an Alaska wildlife documentary I worked on this past year - which will air on National Geographic Channel on 3/21 ("Icy Killers").

Again - great lens - but a rental item unless you have lots of extra cash and can use it regularly to justify the outlay.

Now that some have responded... next up:

21mm T1.9
65mm T1.9
120mm T1.9
140mm T1.9

14mm beginning

Actually I have tried it (just once). One more toy I'd love to own if I could find a way to justify it!
