  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New RED policy...

I like this idea.

think it would have to be semi private - invitation only. and they already have that...

Hey man, Jim said "tons of cool stuff behind the scenes"

thats good enough for me, there is a lot to adopt too. New MAC's
Nehalem's...

most people are just trying to find work. Lets also not forget Jim's post in Feb, when they throttled back the OT.

Its going to be YEARS, not months, before this drought is over. we just pumped a shit ton of cash into the global economy by selling CHINA a ton
of our debt...

these are some strange times... but my advice to RED.

F#$K everyone else. (i.e competition) Just make the best products you can, and keep expanding the kick ass support while pushing the edge.

Obsolescence Obsolete is tough the way this shit changes...

one thing is for certain... film may never die, but Digital is here forever

This still seems like an exceedingly fair policy, especially since I'd imagine Scarlet and Epic have passed beyond the "user input" level of development into finalization and production. Still, while I support this company's mission and M.O., you have to admit that the competition is trying hard to tempt many of us away from RED in this time of limited information.

We're rooting for you RED.

Jim,

As always, you make one hell of a camera. And I for one am very pleased with my Red One. Your direct communication policy is a necessary development evil, which I know you will continue. I will continue to use my Red to make great imagery for myself and my clients and I will adopt an Epic and a Scarlet or three when they arrive. But my experience has taught me that a rush to market is a rush to failure. I want your Epic and Scarlet to blow away any of your competition's models. Thanks for the camera I have in my hands now, and thanks for the cameras you are working hard to put in my hands in the future. I can wait longer than you can, I'm sure. Everybody's just gonna have to suck it up and take it like a man (or Woman). Even if half the people on this forum abandon you, there will be ten more replacing each one of them when your products are ready to hit the street.

Waiting can be a blessing and a curse. I've been waiting for the Scarlet so long I am getting close to being able to afford a Red One. And since I can trade that model up (with some additional cash) there is no loss to me if I buy a Red One now. Also, I imagine there is going to be an unprecedented back log when the Scarlet actually is released which means more waiting still. I'd rather just get the Red One which is available for immediate delivery now. I honestly understand that it's challenging to afford a $17,500 body only camera. But I decided to keep saving until either the Scarlet was released or I could afford a Red One. What I am NOT going to do is settle and go buy something else because I can't wait any longer. For me the fact is, no other product out there is going to "completely" satisfy me like Red products. If I buy a HPX300 or EX3, I'd still have to get a DOF and relay (Letus Ultimate being chosen here) which adds up close in price to a Red One body. And until Canon sends uncompressed data out of it's HDMI port so that I could use it with AJA's ki pro, I'm still dissatisfied (among other reasons). If I am going to spend $5000 or more on something, I want to be satisfied with that purchase. And as far as the Apple comparison is concerned, if I buy an iPhone today and a new version is released tomorrow I am stuck. But if I buy a Red One today and Epic X is released tomorrow I CAN upgrade. That is a BIG difference!

we?.. who?..

less the thousands who will buy canon in the meantime?..

less the thousands we all need for an affordable scarlet?..

don't you see how all this thing is a quite of a shot in our own feet?!!

do you need a picture to see?.. there's no scarlet yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

I don't believe the RED game is necessarily about money alone, unless I am mistaken. Let the thousands buy the 5D if they like, it's not in the same league as a raw motion picture camera. SLRs are pretty ubiquitous these days, within a short time, video capture with an SLR of any flavour will be table stakes. But at raw? Thats the thing thats worth waiting for.

It might be useful to start collecting an internal database of the size and how long it takes to accomplish certain critical, schedule driving, uncertain and common tasks, as well as the predictions of the task durations. This database could then be used to develop reasonable ranges or bounds in duration for use in a Monte Carlo network schedule simulation. The results of such a simulation would allow the following kind of language to be used accurately and with some confidence:

"There is a better than even chance that the S35 Scarlet will be under some of your Christmas trees this year, but Thanksgiving is a real possibility. We are almost completely certain that it will be available by NAB 2010."

For example, if writing VHDL tends to be a schedule driver of uncertain duration in your schedules, you could start asking Graeme to keep track of his predictions of size (in lines and/or gates) and how long it will take his team and him to get it done to some level. Keep track of how it long it actually takes, and build some representation of the track record into the uncertainty of duration into your formal network schedule for simulation.

A useful by-product of this kind of modeling is, that if you treat Graeme and his team as a resource in your schedule, and you have several tasks or projects that may require their attention, you can get a sense of when their availability is likely to become a pacing issue, or in other words, when they will find themselves on the critical path. Such information can be very useful in scheduling, resource planning, and even hiring.

On the other hand, the "artsy" nature of what you do might be so unpredictable and innovation/breakthrough driven it would not be worth the time and money to apply this discipline.

Jim & Team RED,

This is a shame to see. I felt this was the kind of thing that (partly) made RED such a hit. I also feel that this kind of customer interaction is what company's of the future need to start doing more. Luckily for RED i'm one of the common sensed fan's so i have patience and realise what "this always change, and they will' means. I can understand why they've felt they need to tone it down. Its a shame though. :(

As a fan of manufacturing and the complex and extraordinary processes that go into creating devices, having even a small window into them like RED provided was awesome. Why should the small handful of (lucky) geeks get all the fun. :P hehe

PS. Come on aussie dollar... help me have half a chance at a Scarlet at least! ;)

I know with all new technologies it is good thing to have patience. And when new releases are out for that new technology which becomes old over time you have to reflect and think. - what did they use long ago that still looks cool or an enduring innovation which is timeless.

I started to think about getting two RED cameras (I have the money to do so, cause I wanted 4 Red Cameras- and interchange accessories), and now I have scaled back my thoughts to just get one. So patience is a virtue , sure. But Red could have sold me more cameras but I am glad I get One RED now and upgrade with trinkets and reusable gizmos for later as well. (EPIC comes out in XXX time, so I'll just wait) - So I save my money, my time (i think) and get a couple cool thinks like Steadicams and a new Mac Book Pro.

I am glad they are communicating releases in the way they do. Its a slow cook. Remember they are building cameras from the ground up, not pumping them out recklessly like Chryslers or Fords. A good American Made Camera , and I am proud to have ordered one.

I am just frustrated because I want to be shooting again. I have all summer off and will drive all over the the Northwest. This took a few years to set it up to get the whole summer off. My dream was to be shooting video with quality that could rival any other. I gave up on video for now because even better options for RED were coming. Then I decided to just shoot stills and maybe do some timelapse like Tom is doing. ( Great stuff Tom). Now I am just two weeks away from the rest of the summer off and I still do not have anything to work with. I can buy the Nikon DX3 or Canon's 8K still camera. Why pay all that money when RED will have something better. All my lenses at this time are Nikon. All expensive and very fast glass. If it is going to be years before some of the RED options are available then it may be worth to buy what is available. If RED optioins are going to be released in a month or so, then it may be worth just waiting.

That is why I am so interested in a ball park estimate as to when they may be available.

I know the key portion why I am getting another RED is because the easy upgrade path/trade in for the EPIC. Now lets just see Canon or Sony try to even attempt that. - Going from a Sony EX1 to a Sony EX3, good luck. But yes greg. Just be patient. Cause in time there will be other things to wait again to be patient for.

try to tell this yadda yadda to those thousands & thousands..

edit
it is a shame jannard.. we need the scarlet

I will just buy a point and shoot camera for a couple 100 dollars and try to sell the images. Just kidding. Maybe I will just take the whole summer and spend it with my new wife. We can play tourist and shoot middle of the range DSLR.

Not sure why I am so determined to spend for the top of the line ( that is currently available ) when I cant even get book publishers to pay up what they owe me. Even National Geographic killed a story that was to use my underwater shots. Budget issues. They had a couple hundred of my 35mm images for over 6 months.

Guess there is always next time and now they know who I am. The problem is the ones that know me may not be there in a year or so. My friends that work for the BBC told me a year or so ago to wait before buying anything because of all the new stuff coming. They mentioned RED. I see why a lot of people rent instead of buying. I have so much money tied up on 35mm film still gear. I have 6 camera bodies. I just do not want to have a shelf full of Digital camera bodies to sit next to them. Wait a minute....maybe I can start my own obsolete camera collection.

Regardless of what happens I do see my self going RED ( IT IS THE FUTURE )

Something tell's me Red is working very hard at Preparing Epic and Scarlet
for a speedy delivery, because i know they're just like me and are tired of hearing about these other cameras that are "as good as red"
Because i don't believe it and neither do they.
I can't wait to get my Epic!!, ahh!!!!!

good post but.. last line you should write scarlet instead

Not my words, nothing is as good as my REDone
But there are people on set that still annoy me with false information,
it's like Redone is such a star, there's still crazy gossip, lol.

I think 5D is only better as far as size and weight concerns. Why not a Red One but same form factor?

Redone with new formfactor is fine by me, as i agree i am mostly updating because of the size and weight, the only thing is the new form factor Redone's will be called Epic and Scarlet :001_cool:

good post but.. last line you should write scarlet instead

Agreed, Scarlet will be Epic!.....
lol
but seriously, i hope to have both camera's in my bag.
A lighter weight less expensive Scarlet is as beautiful as it's name,
and will look just as good as my Epic
