  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new RED ONE support.

mike: so are you saying you can open build 16 anamorphic footage but not build 17/18?

Yes, new Avid codecs, just in time for what I'm about to do right now. THANK YOU!!!

Anamorphic

Anamorphic

I don't understand exactly how the anamorphic mode on RED works.

Do you need to use an anamorphic lens or would you use a normal lens.

Is there any cropping or matting done?

Yes, and you should only use this mode with a 2x anamorphic lens.

Because the lens applies a 2:1 horizontal compression, the camera mattes the area of the sensor recorded down to an approximate 4:3 aspect.

It also applies a 2:1 expansion and scale of the monitor path to present the data in the 2.40:1 aspect. The height of a 4K ANA recording is 2304 pixels.

hi Rob,

Essentially, yes. I'll walk you through my findings so far.

I have now opened and tested that the build 18 beta 4k ana test I shot will not open in REDCINE or any of the QT Poxies. (i do have the new QT Codec installed).
Each time i open in REDCINE it crashes it. Not the case with Build 16 shot ana footage. Also, the QT Proxies open in QT but are scrambled like the attached picture.

I have confirmed this same effect on 4 different computers, running everything from 10.4.11-10.5.x newest os. All with the new QT Codec installed and all have the same successes and same problems.

I have put two r3d files in my iDisk that you can download and see for yourself if you wish. On the previous page you can find the path and member name to access those files.

It truly kicks ass though to be able to monitor de-squeezed! And RedRushes seems to work well with the new anamorphic footage!

NSOpenPanel derives from NSSavePanel.
[mypanel setCanCreateDirectories:YES] should do the trick :-)

Whaddayaknow... it worked although I swear a long time ago i tried it and it didn't do anything. It'll be in the next build :)

can you email rob and myself?

How freakin' sweet!

Thanks

Stuart,

how much of the sensor width is used in 4k ana recoding? Are you essentially using the full 4520 width for recording...or something close to that? Sorry for beating this possibly dead horse but I'm just trying to wrap my head around how 4k ana works on red one and if the final product works out to truly being a 4k image.

Thanks in adavance,
Omar

2816 x 2304 (full vertical) at a little bit more that 1.2:1 (doubled to 2.40:1 after desqueeze and a small crop)

Soderberg finished a whole feature with the alpha of this build and had no issues.

no, it's a center 4x3 crop of the 16x9 sensor. I suck at math, but it would be, what, like around 2800 pixels wide? something like that.

EDIT: what Deanan said. Hey, 2800, not a bad friggin guess! :)

AVID love, and anamorph love. Awesome!

@ Deanan
There are new anamorphic lenses out there, that deal with the issue of 4:3 anamorph on 16:9 chip. Hower, they have a new anamorph squeeze ratio of 1:1,3. This means, that they "make" 16:9 out of a 4:3 sensor (arri) or in the case of RED ONE, they would allow to use the full size of the chip as the "recording area" for the anamorph (1:2.36 -> 1:1,77 (16:9)).

Would this be something interesting for you?
I assume, that the implementation should not be that different from what you have now for anamorph. Maybe even easier, as the camera would record full 16:9, but would need to desqueeze differently for the EVF/monitors/etc. For the non-programmer guy like me it looks like just a different ratio setting.

Problem solved on the anamorphic playback in QT.
We'll have a new QT codec out soon.

It simply isn't a 4k image.
The horizontal resolution is a lot less.

Maybe it's a little pedantic of me, but it does make me cringe that Red call it 4k anamorphic, when it has absolutely nothing to do with 4k, except that the vertical resolution is the same as what 4k 16:9's would be.

Ditto for "3k anamorphic"
Ditto for "2k anamorphic"

Another great day.... cheer-up
